I've grinded 3rd numerous times. I also get a rattling sound that increases in volume and speed of the rattle as the car accelerates in 2nd gear sometimes.

Default Tranny fluids

How about tranny fluids. What is everyone (blown and intact trannies) running for gear lube? I have gone through the 1 qt heavyweight shock proof/3qt. lightweight, then went to all heavyweight shock proof, I am now on the cocktail from modders. I am thinking of going to a 50%/50% of lightweight and heavyweight shockproof.
Other than dealing with a chattering clutch, she is still running at 27000 miles (knocks on wood till tree falls over). I have 1/4 tracked at Infineon, practiced doughnuts and ran in the mud (all of which is probably why my stock clutch is gone, but way cheaper than gears.

Also I am curious who is revmatching on the downshifts, who is just down shifting and who avoids it all together?

I ALWAYS rev-match! Occasional clunk from 1st-2nd but not harsh when I shift. Still good at 15k w/no grinds but im just stage1.

Early '06, 20k, and 90% city driving. I'm fine so far, but my synchros will have an early death. Scotty's Cocktail, Stg. 2.

I am running Redline 75w-90NS. For some reason I had a 4th gear crunch for a while last summer (really not sure if it was fluid related) but it is no longer present... But it shifts way better than it ever did with the factory fill. I had some Cobb bushings in the shifter too, but I ditched those and went back to the soft rubbers.

07 WRX (MFG 01/07) currently at 18k and no problems (knocking on wood).

I Went stage 1 at 1k miles. I shifted 1st thru 3rd pretty hard a few times at the drag strip. Quite a few 3rd gear WOT for data logging (and driving enjoyment). Always slip the clutch when launching (only bogged it once and that smarted... it sounded gnarly ).

I Went stage 2 at 14K and I have not been to the track (yet) nor popped the clutch in any gear. I have done quite a few 3rd gear WOT for data logging. I have done a few WOT logs 1st thru 3rd (soft launches and granny like shifts).

Oh... and yeah... my wife has driven it a few times. God only knows what she's done to it. But no curb rash or dents and it still shifts like the day I bought it (knocking on wood).

Go Motul fluid.
It alone will greatly improve engagement and shifts.

I and 2 other buddies got our (06)WRXs around the same time (maybe 2-3 months apart from each other). Buddy 1 blew his 1st & 3rd gear while running a FPgreen for 3-4k miles. He wondered if redline clutch drops hurt the car alot, lol. He later traded it in blown and now has a 07STi( had 2 other NEW cars in like a 5 month span). Buddy 2 blew 3rd a week after going with a vf39. He went to one of the mod friendly dealers in the area and had the tranny fixed under warranty. I believe he is going to if he hasnt already ordered the MFactory gears). As for me I babied my car after the second horror story for a few months and got me a 05 STi.

i'm thinking of going with amsoil severe gear but can't find a local retailer, so i may just go with motul 300...or even Subaru S, but at $20 bucks/quart...they better be MUCH better than amsoil.

I just got rid of my 5-speed. I had it built with an MFactory 1st through 4th set, OEM 5th. I put about 4000 miles on that setup. 3000 were on a Stage II setup, putting down 238/295 on a dynojet, with NO issues whatsoever. Kept the OEM flywheel with an Exedy Stage 1 clutch. The last 1000 or so were with my new setup...over 370 ft/lbs on the same dyno. Didn't have any issues, but since MFactory's are rated to 375, we figured we should play it safe.

That said, I ran Stage II on my stock gears and clutch without issue. Then again, I don't drive like a tool. FWIW, the SPT/STi short shifter and clutch made it a whole new transmission. It's JDM 6-speed time now, haha.

My stock clutch went during the tune on my setup (330wtq/330whp on a dynojet) so I'm waiting for the Mfactory gears to come in...

I thought that if you baby it (i did) everything should be fine...but engineering limits are just that

The new setup is still not 100% complete, but it's basically testing out a lot of new Tomei parts. SPT intake (changing soon), Samco turbo inlet, Tomei turbo (think ball bearing 20G), Spearco TMIC, PE800's, Walbro fuel pump, Tomei cams/stock valvetrain, stock heads/block, Tomei equal length header/uppipe, Agency Power downpipe (changing soon), HKS Carbon Ti catback. It's only got a base map on it now, and it's all running through the JDM 6-speed with a mechanical rear diff. That thing is nasty.

It's getting a full dyno tune on August 2nd. I'll probably add the new intake, TGV deletes, and possibly an extrude honed intake manifold by then. So far it's amazing...the Tomei parts are the only ones installed in the US to date, and not released to the general public just yet.

DS1 Motorsports.

It can be installed exactly the same as the USDM. The only difference are the 5th and 6th gears. You can use the same clutch, but I'm running the JDM one because it's pretty stout from the factory.

About to go stage 2...I have 30k on the car in stock form...Im a little scared due to all these horror stories, just because I learned how to drive stick in it and have grinded a few gears once or twice. But all in all the car runs great and haven't had any trans probs. Im doing a gear oil change, again, to check the oil for any abnormalities (too many shavings or god forbid a chunk of a gear). Going with Redline 75W90NS, I did this change around 12k and was very staisfied.

Hoping that everything will be fine because I have been very cautions with my up shifts (not banging throught the box) and rev match all the time. Plus I can only get 91 octane here...

Put 36k on my stock gears. Half of that with cobb stg 2. Plenty of spirited driving, including upwards of 2 dozen launches on stock clutch and gears.

I decided to have Rallispec install the close ratio 1-5 RA set with the 3.9 fd because I was dead set on turbo upgrade and I didn't trust the stock set. When they pulled them I learned that they were still in great shape. there was absolutely no sign of abuse or wear, just a clutch that was wearing a bit.

Im now running the RA's with an exedy stg 1 clutch and a vf43 at 21.5psi and love the set up.

P.S. Still got my stock gear set if anyone is interested
