Formula 1 2009 - Round 3: Shanghai, China
Diffusers still a problem? Kubicas lighter car can give him his 1st win at Shanghai? Rosberg optimistic for China, is he bluffing?

Should be a good race with the cars being able to get so close to each other. Last few years were parades because of the long turns stretching the field out.

Rumor has it Ferrari will have a new front wing on for this race.
An I would be willing to bet if the Diffusers are ruled legal they might have one of those as well. |

I'm predicting another win for Button. I really like the racing this year but the off-track soap opera is getting old. Instead of whining about how Brawn has an unfair advantage, the rest of the teams should be spending their time developing their cars to take full advantage of the rules. You know if Ferrari or McLaren had thought of this diffuser design first nobody would question it, but because an independent team is blowing away the factory teams everybody is up in arms about it. I like seeing new faces on the podium, and I think it would be terrible for the sport if Brawn loses the latest appeal and has points taken away.

Honestly I think the trick diffuser are good for the sport, but I would guess every one will have one by years end and then they will be outlawed next year in the name of cost savings. Just because it doesn't make scene. CN: They have an honest gripe but it will be better for racing if they just make a new diffuser. It will be much worse for there bank accounts and next year they will all start over. R- |

I hope Brawn doesn't get points taken away. I'd rather see a true clarification of the rules going forward so that everyone has the same base from which to build.

Where'd you get that it cost 30 million to make a new diffuser?

Ferrari said it would cost 30 mill to redesign the entire rear of the car to accommodate a new diffuser. As just putting a different diffuser would not be possible or effective. I read that on one of the F1 threads within the last few weeks, it might be in one of the auto sport articles but I'm not sure.
It would be different if the team could just extend there wing end plates down and then slap a different diffuser on, but the bottom rear floor/ crash structure and passable the engine cover way need to be redesign to make it fit and be effective. R- |

I don't believe its anywhere near that amount, they're just throwing out large numbers to make it seem bad.

Well the point is that it is more then just copy and past. Could you imagine what it will cost for the redbull cars they may have to redesign there rear suspension.
I think we will see allot of teams try the quick fix of extending the rear wing end plates down to try to act as an increased volume diffuser while they figure out the double decker idea. I think 30 mill is ether the number or picked as that is the proposed budget cap. Hmmm... R- |

Check out how far the RB5/STR3 rear wing goes down compared to the the rest. They are already "cheating" the diffuser rule.
This image is too big to post but shows all the teams in profile: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/wp-conten...rb5_side_2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fuserLegal.jpg |
