Diffusers still a problem?
Kubicas lighter car can give him his 1st win at Shanghai?
Rosberg optimistic for China, is he bluffing?

Should be a good race with the cars being able to get so close to each other. Last few years were parades because of the long turns stretching the field out.

That doesn't make any sense at all, you can be second, third, fourth... hell you can even be fifth.

BMW pushes for lighter car for Kubica

By Jonathan Noble Monday, April 13th 2009, 10:40 GMT

Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber, Malaysian GPBMW Sauber is hoping to introduce a lightweight version of its F1.09 for the Spanish Grand Prix in a bid to boost Robert Kubica's chances of using KERS.

The Polish driver has been unable to use the device up to now, because its added weight and the subsequent loss of ballast has a knock-on impact on his car's handling - especially when it comes to tyre degradation issues.

Team-mate Nick Heidfeld, who is much lighter than Kubica, has been able to race with KERS in the first two events of the season.

With BMW Sauber adamant that KERS does bring a benefit, it is understood that the Hinwil-based team has been working hard on a weight reduction programme that would overcome the issues Kubica has faced.

The improvements are expected to form part of a major package of updates scheduled for the race at Barcelona in May - where Kubica could even use KERS for the first time.

Although there is a minimum weight limit for the car, a lightweight chassis would allow BMW Sauber to fit ballast in a more suitable place to help with the car's handling.

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen has drawn short of confirming the plans for a lightweight car, but he has made it clear that the team is doing all it can to get KERS onto Kubica's car.

"We are aiming to prepare the cars for KERS with him," said Kubica. "That includes development on the KERS side as well as the car side.

"The issue is weight and the lack of ballast then to properly balance the car. It is not the KERS [alone] that causes the problem and we are working on that. My view is that in the course of the season you will need KERS to be up front - not just on the grid, but also in the race."

When asked by AUTOSPORT about a weight reduction programme for the Spanish GP, Theissen said: "That would help exactly. We have some developments ongoing, but...wait and see. I don't want to go into detail now."

Heavier drivers like Kubica and Mark Webber have been pushing for an amendment to the minimum weight limit in F1 for next year to stop them being penalised by KERS. One suggestion is for the drivers, their race wear and their seat to have a minimum weight.

Rumor has it Ferrari will have a new front wing on for this race.

I'm predicting another win for Button. I really like the racing this year but the off-track soap opera is getting old. Instead of whining about how Brawn has an unfair advantage, the rest of the teams should be spending their time developing their cars to take full advantage of the rules. You know if Ferrari or McLaren had thought of this diffuser design first nobody would question it, but because an independent team is blowing away the factory teams everybody is up in arms about it. I like seeing new faces on the podium, and I think it would be terrible for the sport if Brawn loses the latest appeal and has points taken away.

Yes they are whining but its over 30 million give or take, and its agents the spirit of the rule as deiced by the teams on the rule comity . If it was decided up front ok here is the rule do your best work around then there would have been a different outcome and it would be who had the best idea.

Honestly I think the trick diffuser are good for the sport, but I would guess every one will have one by years end and then they will be outlawed next year in the name of cost savings. Just because it doesn't make scene.

CN: They have an honest gripe but it will be better for racing if they just make a new diffuser. It will be much worse for there bank accounts and next year they will all start over.

I hope Brawn doesn't get points taken away. I'd rather see a true clarification of the rules going forward so that everyone has the same base from which to build.

Where'd you get that it cost 30 million to make a new diffuser?

Ferrari said it would cost 30 mill to redesign the entire rear of the car to accommodate a new diffuser. As just putting a different diffuser would not be possible or effective. I read that on one of the F1 threads within the last few weeks, it might be in one of the auto sport articles but I'm not sure.

It would be different if the team could just extend there wing end plates down and then slap a different diffuser on, but the bottom rear floor/ crash structure and passable the engine cover way need to be redesign to make it fit and be effective.

I believe that number came from Ferrari. Said they would have to redesign the entire under-tray of the car to work with the new diffuser.

EDIT: Yeah what he said.

I don't believe its anywhere near that amount, they're just throwing out large numbers to make it seem bad.

Well the point is that it is more then just copy and past. Could you imagine what it will cost for the redbull cars they may have to redesign there rear suspension.

I think we will see allot of teams try the quick fix of extending the rear wing end plates down to try to act as an increased volume diffuser while they figure out the double decker idea.

I think 30 mill is ether the number or picked as that is the proposed budget cap.

Hmmm...

Check out how far the RB5/STR3 rear wing goes down compared to the the rest. They are already "cheating" the diffuser rule.

This image is too big to post but shows all the teams in profile:
