I want to get a daily driver
Someone at work is selling his 91 integra GS and I'm interested in buying it as a daily driver to keep some of the miles off my subaru. One of the things I asked him was what the maintenance schedule was like. It has 106k miles right now and he says he changed the oil between 6-10k miles. Now, that seems high to me, what does everyone else think? Is this a car I'll have problems with because of that oil change interval? I thought 3-5k was proper. Other than that, the car looks great and the price is nice. I'm hung up on that one point, though..

Depends on what oild he's using.. thats not so far out of range if its synthetic..
But.. why another car for daily driver.. Keep the miles off the STi? That seems kinda silly.. its a $30k car.. its not like its a McLaren or some sort of Early 1900's collector car. Its a Subaru. Drive it. Enjoy it.., Or sell it. |

Oil changes are mainly a way for people changing the oil to make money. Obviously check the engine, but that seems fine.

I loved my '91 LS Special (diff. interior, sunroof, spoiler, alloys).
Timing belt is the major gotcha. It's one of those wicked serpentines that can cause major valve failure if it goes from cracking / rubber failure. If he didn't do it at less than 80K, or hasn't done it yet, it's a bomb waiting to explode. CV boots / joints too. No other major stuff that I recall - I had mine for 110K, traded it in '97 for about $8.5K (was $14.8 new at invoice - got a deal). Original clutch, driven pretty hard, held up very well - not really enough torque to smoke it, smooth enough shifts not to worry about notched / beaten gears. I wouldn't worry much at all about the oil change intervals. If it doesn't smoke when it's cold-started, you're set - head gasket is ok. Have a Honda savvy friend check it out, and then do it if the price is right. Oh, one more thing - check to see if he converted the a/c to the new system - non CFC-12, IIRC. Those model year 'tegs were some of the last with it and not the new R-34 (or maybe I have that backwards). Anyways, I converted mine in place with the same compressor, dryer, and motor and never had a problem with the new refrigerant - cost like $80, IIRC, a lot more if you do the full system swap. |

Last spring after I got my WRX I turned my Neon over to my dad for my younger sister to drive. From what dad said the past few times I've asked about the car, she barely drives it (last time I visited hometown the brake rotors were completely coated in rust and the engine sounded like isht when I took it for a "old time sake" drive). I oughta investigate how much my insurance premium would change if I had the Neon w/ bare-bones liability. If it looks sensible $-wise, next time I'm talking with dad I'll bring it up with him.
Hard to imagine that having two cars might be cheaper than 1, but the Neon drinks 87 and never got <28mpg... DjB |
