Seems like new car, yet same old problems..
Turbo Subarus need a tune as soon as soon as they roll out of the dealership, as well as frequent oil changes 5-30 should never be used. 93 octane at all times were applicable. we are sitting on time bombs otherwise.

Why the heck are you running 5w40 anyway?
Automakers are ALL like this. Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, GM.. doesn't matter. They all look for retarded excuses not to authorize repairs. And they all lean HARD on their dealership network to NOT do warranty work. |

He's running 5w40 because like 12 guys on the internet blew up their heavily modified cars because the stock oil weight wasn't sufficient to protect from bearing failure.
I'd be looking for a leak - possibly secondary air injection or something of the sort. We've got an 09 Forester (non-turbo) with an EGR valve that caused misfire codes on all 4 cyls, but no codes for the EGR system itself. |

its threads like this and the fact that i work with an ex flat rate dealer tech that are going to have my resealing the oil pan on my 7,000 mile 2011 wrx by myself. i know the dealer will either claim its normal or the tech will just use an angle grinder with a scotch brite pad and toss silicone all over the bottom end and likely cause a spun bearing that they will later claim is from abuse. its pathetic and sickening how many dealers and soa handle these simple issues.

Clearly it happens ALL the time... yet there are no current threads about stock unmolested 2.5 turbos with spun bearings? I think your definition of reality is different than mine. This must be just like all those water pumps failing left and right. |

Well, I have my car back again. The stated source of the problem is the valve clearance. Specifically:

Doesn't sound logical to me. Let's see if that fix the problem. They already mess up saying it's due to oil the first time but obviously it's not. Don't think they know what they are doing. |

oh my god! so loosening the valve clearance on a couple cylinders .001" into spec is the solution? (assuming they actually measured correctly) wow! i think i have officially lost the last tiny bit of faith in dealers i had left.

keep us posted OP. i hope your car is fixed, but i would be skeptical to think the codes would be claiming cylinder misfires and all they do is tighten valves 0.001" less lol

i would get a refund ASAP on the oil change. You should argue that THEIR oil change caused this problem..
And yes, contact SOA . |

I recall an old misfire thread where a valve adjustment fixed the issue...

Good news is you'll know for sure what the problem was when they fix it, regardless of what we tell you on here.
I've used RT6 on two STis for 100k miles combined and no issues. Both turning excellent UOAs. Not sure how the oil would have caused misfires on all 4 cyl but ok :/ GL OP & keep us posted |

Complete BS.. I have never had a car throw a code because of the oil. Unless you ran out of oil..

As a final update, after about 2000 miles and 3 months, the CEL has not returned and the car idles much more smoothly.
I don't know what else to say, the valve adjustment appears to have solved the problem and despite the cost, I will probably stick with the Subaru branded 5w-30 synthetic for all future oil changes. With regard to the cost of the oil change charged by the dealer, I'm not going to bother hassling them about it. Not that 100 bucks is chump change, but I have better things to do with my life. |
