H6 Twin Turbo GC8 Impreza
Hi guys,
I thought some of you might be interested to take a look at this: This is the compressed video of the build we did this summer, car currently being finished, some small faults corrected, etc. Car itself is based around an EZ30 with BW 550bhp capable twin BW turbos, Rigoli drag box and lots more. Sole purpose is drag racing, of course. Now, since the car is still being set up on the dyno, i can't make official power clams (making the video title a bit misleading since i already quoted power with nitrous...hm) but as soon as the dyno setup on E85 is complete, i will post a power graph, and, eventually, some strip slips. And a full project description and pictures once we finish everything up. Until then, i'd be happy to answer any questions you might have, since i'm told not so many of these is around with similar specs

Please share in the Officail H6 Impreza swap thread.
BTW did the manifold reverse just fine or did you have any issues doing it at all? I've been slowly building my car and even slower at working on my 30R sitting in my garage. Which BW did you go with? I am going since S366 on mine. |

Got a closer look at the end of the video that it's a custom manifold... Still please share everything you can in the other thread though.

Ew, I had always wondered if someone else shared this idea that I had as well. Glad to see it came together so well. Congrats on the build, can't wait to see more from this.

Updates: went on a dyno, had it up to 18psi on 100octane fuel (plan is to go up to at least 25psi on E85) and pretty low ignition timing - it made little over 500BHP at that point, but we still held back a lot as the engine only did around 100 miles or so, but after a few runs had a problem as something started rattling really bad... Immediately thought it was the bearings, so we aborted further runs, got back in the shop and stripped the engine.
It wasn't the bearings after all, but the torque converter, wasn't tightened well enough to the plate connecting it to the crank, so it moved about in the bolt holes, making the rattling noise. Stupid mistake, but i was glad it wasn't something more serious. While we're at it, we added the dru sump, just to make sure we don't ever run into an oil supply trouble. That said, the engine bearings, although they did not fail or make any noise, were not in such a good shape for an effectively new engine (an issue i'll have to take up with the builder, clearances and tightening torque were obviously not right...) so they will have to be changed. ACL do not make them, so it will have to be something else. 3 questions, then: - does anybody know a supplier or manufacturer i can get race spec main and conrod bearings for the EZ30? - i need the full spec of the bearings, exact measurements - engine technical info or documentation would help...? - alternatively, would anybody know if some other engine bearings would fit, so not necessarily Subaru, but some other manufacturer with identical sized bearings - i was told that Chevy 265/283/327ci series engines have the same sizes, and could be used (ACL makes bearings for it), although i have no way of knowing, unless someone has tried it or has original measurements. Help? |

what clearances do you have now and what are you trying to get? you can always polish the crank to get desired clearances.
What diameters and widths are the journals? Not having built an EZ motor yet, I don't have the dimensions. |

Honestly, no idea what clearances i have, as i'm not building the engine myself at this point.
What i'm trying to get, or find, is anything else but the standard engine bearing, preferably something like the ACL race series bearings, which they do not make for this engine (no aftermarket bearings available at all for the EZ30, it seems). The choice would be to either use standard bearings (which i'm not sure will hold) or some other bearing with the same spec as Subaru's (and for that, i need standard bearing size to compare). Orsome third option i can't think of at this point For the same reason, i suppose, the original engine builder used these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CLE-CB745HN/ So, not a Subaru, but Chevy spec bearing, which for the moment does not work all that well - problem is, i'm not sure why: is it because the dimensions were off and this bearing does not mach the engine, or the dimensions were right but it was overtightened which resulted in damage. Hence the reason i'm looking for the dimensions of the standard bearings, so i can compare with the ones already inside the engine. If the dimensions are off, that would mean the bearing does not work well because of the dimension mismatch, and i need to look further, based on the dimensions of the original bearings. But, if the dimensions match, problem solved - i would just get ACL Race series for the Chevy engine, like the one from the link. Which in turn would mean that the bearing now in the engine must've been overtightened, or the tolerances were not right. I would say that, based on the damage i could see on the bearing, it was overtightened, as the wear marks are mainly in the center, but the bearing itself is not burned indicating lack of oil. That's the whole story, hence my lookout for the standard bearing dimensions. |

According to the EZ30R FSM I've got, the dimensions are:
Crank pin outer diameter: 51.984 - 52.000mm (2.0466 - 2.0472") Conrod big end bearing thickness: 1.490 - 1.506mm (0.0587 - 0.0593") Conrod big end oil clearance: 0.016 - 0.043mm (0.0006 - 0.0017") Crank journal outer diameter: 63.992 - 64.008mm (2.5194 - 2.5200") Main bearing thickness (#1, 3, 5 & 7): 1.992 - 2.005mm (0.0784 - 0.0789") Main bearing thickness (#2, 4 & 6): 1.996 - 2.009mm (0.0786 - 0.0791") Main bearing oil clearance: 0.010 - 0.030mm (0.0004 - 0.0012") For each bearing there are standard, 0.03mm, 0.05mm, and 0.25mm versions - or at least the FSM includes specs for those, so I assume the different sized parts are available from Subaru. What the above data does not include is the width of the bearings. Interesting that the Chevy bearings (apparently) are the right width. Pat Olsen |

Well, since i took those Chevy bearings out of an EZ30, the width is, apparently, correct. This would be the corresponding ACL bearing set for that Chevy engine:
http://www.aclperformance.com.au/Che...27Bearings.htm Comparing those to the EZ30 measurements, would they fit? And should i be allowing for extra oil clearance? |

As far as i could tell, big end bearings are Chevy, and crank bearings are standard Subaru.

If they're using 2" chevy bearings I'm guessing they ground the crank to do so.
The main bearings are the weird ones on that engine where you need to use the OEM ones (which are pretty good). The rod bearings are the same as an EJ, so you just need to get two sets and have extras. or three sets for 2 motors I guess. EDIT: NOT the same. close though. In for main bearing info to be flushed out more.... I think that's the only thing missing from my list at this point.
