Post Idea for air intake - vendors tell me what you think

I know that a lot of people have already modified their intake by removing the resonator and installing a panel filter. My concern about this setup is that there is no direct line to cold air into the fender. In my SVX there is a stock mudflap, which I cut into an air scoop. I then extended an elbow into the fender and plugged around the pipe with foam. I also taped all other entries into the fender from the engine. It works great.

This would work well on the WRX too. It would be pretty simple to just make a tube elbow to connect a cylidrical filter on. A scoop could be made to fit into the under fender cover. Another option might be a modified right fog light housing that would allow air to be carried into the fender around the light.

What do you guys think?

Almost forgot. Also could do an elbow replacement of the resonator to connect to the stock snorkle. I still think this is a good setup. Only problem with this is the filter cross sectional area would be smaller than that of a cone filter.

Sounds like a good DIY project, or you could buy a polished one from Injen (shameless plug) that utilizes a cone filter mounted behind the right foglamp...

Looks great. But what is going on in the fender? open air cone or closed and connected to snorkle? More info. Great looking mod.

I was thinking that the WRC style headlight "vents" could make for a nice forced cold air induction route to whatever filtration setup you would pick...

if the light fixtures being talked about in Vendor Classified do become available, I'll have to try some diy mods based around this concept...

The intake looks nice, but does it keep the MAF happy?

Good idea to route cold air from somewhere to the intake, BUT... (our opinion, which drove what filter we carry)

You need to think about three things. Air temperature, smooth air, and filtration. It does help to lower air temp going into the intake, but you want to keep the air well filtered and smooth when it hits the MAF. We carry a flat filter element from ITG that does both these, and it's coating will protect the Scooby's sensitive MAF sensor better than foam elements.

In short, go ahead and duct the air, but we recommend the flat panel filter and one that will protect the MAF.

As long as the panel filter has less pressure drop across it, it really does not matter if a panel or a cone is used. What does your filter drop show at say 350 cfm and how does this compare to a k&n cone.

Good ideas. I like the vented head light mount the best with either a cone or a panel.

OK venders....run with it.

i took my foglights out and ran a 3" aluminum flex tubing from that hole in the foglight backplate directly into the filter box, perfect fit. alot beter response, i also have an avc-r so that may help too. the driver side i'm using the same tubing and routeing it to a hole next to th battery so i can get some extra air in the engine bay. i put aluminum screen door mesh over the opening of the tube that barely protrudes the foglight backplate hole. i am going to buy the mesh sti fog light covers. it'll add the finishing touch.

well..i sorts took it off. i was getting worried about the amount of dirt and water that the filter was gonna have to go through. i'l post a pic of the tubing if you like. right now i just have that same 3" tubing, but no i just have about a 5" length of it sticking into the fender well. you can hear the turbo alot beter with this shorter setup. i can really hear the bpv. as for performance i might save that ram air setup for the track, who knows.
