Lightbulb 97 Impreza EJ22 (auto) - easy swap options?

I've done... bad.

Managed to bend valves (it seems) on a 97 Impreza Brighton 2.2 auto.

I'm looking into getting the motor fixed... but thought I'd compare options for swapping in something else.

Requirement: stock reliability. I don't wanna put a turbo 2.5 crazy swap in here. If I could find another phase 1 EJ22, will it swap in without rewiring? I read the DOHC EJ25 will go in here without rewiring, too... sadly I SOLD MY SPARE EJ25 a few months ago. Growl.

Basically looking for the cheap reliable route. Help appreciated!

By confusing the piston position mark on the crank sprocket with the timing belt alignment mark

Well... I learned a valuable lesson.

I'm not positive the valves are bent yet, but 95% sure. Got to do a compression test then pull the heads if it looks bad.

The stupid thing is I sold a DOHC EJ25 about 4 months ago and my hoist

I haven't decided anything yet...

But it looks like repairing this one will be more costly than buying a used one that someone dropped for a power upgrade. I picked up an EJ25 with 100k on it for $200 last year (but sadly sold it later... man, I could use that now...)

So that's cheaper and easier than disassembling this motor, it seems

I don't WANT to dump this block, and if I do swap I'll try to repair this one in my own time.

Would like to do that again if I can... but that requires finding a new block.

Based on info over at USMB I'm leaning heavily toward a swap now.

Even if I want to keep this motor, it looks like I just made it very painful to do so

oh yeah, its always cheaper to just dump the whole thing and replace the entire pop. look harder, you might find somthing really neat.
