The new flight 214. Has to be a wake up call for the peers landing there.

I had this precise discussion with a flight crew a few months ago. Oh they make you sit in these jump seats even when a empty regular seat is available right across from you. first response was its needed b/c they are close to all the necessary communications and rescue equipment. Then I told her about the four point harness and how crappy a lap belt is in restraining you. she was horrified. On my other most recent flight (737-900) I asked about the strap across the rear door window. Basically there to safeguard the door opening prior to cross check (?) so that the slide doesn't inflate indoors. I wonder if the door popping led to the slide inflating indoors. |

Arming the doors (ie if you now open the door the slide deploys, outside of the aircraft). I'm sure the aft end of the aircraft was so much deformed it caused one of the doors to come inside.

on the 737-900 the cabin crew was adamant that opening the rear door without disarming it would lead to the slide inflating on the inside. anyone with better insight on this? |

The 'cross check' that is called for is for the flight attendants to check both service doors in their area and ensure the slides are armed, and is indicating as such to anyone outside the aircraft. EDIT: dammit thumper. Way better explanation too. |

Why would the slide open inside the cabin at all? This, to me, is a no-brainer for the engineers who designed the door/slide system.

soo... I donno. I did end up getting two free mini bottles of dewars out of them. Quote:
I know that an armed door, slide opens outward etc but wondering if there is a flaw in this design that if the door doesn't open outwards completely, will the slide inflate on the inside as it can't go outside? Last edited by Indocti Discant; 07-09-2013 at 07:47 PM. |

I'm impressed that all of the doors (that we can see, anyway) opened at all. It probably wouldn't take much fuselage deformation to jam a door.

United..
BUT... they might be unicorns. Amazingly enough I ran into them on my return leg as they were on my inbound. looking at post crash shots the starboard aft door for oz214 was closed. The port was open. |

If anything, it should be worse - in an aircraft, tolerances are much tighter and the door is designed to fit like a plug. Mind you, I'm sure they reinforce the hell out of the door frames.

I am going to guess precisely that. Plus the fuselage is meant to be springy and I'd imagine any give would take place around the reinforcement area.
