OMGHi2U 'Special' greeter at Kohls...well, sort of.

I walked into Kohls today during lunch to do my Christmas shopping and I was greeted by the sight of an African American male in a wheelchair....sort of.

He was dressed very nicely in a pair of slacks and a nice green sweater. But he was not so much 'sitting' in the chair as he was more 'propped-up'. Judging by his posture, I half expected to see that Kohls had pinned or belted him into the chair. It was obvious at first glance that this gentleman was not put in this chair due to a slip and fall in the grocery store or a bad motorcycle accident. This was even more apparent as he tried to speak...yes, tried.

Before I go on and people get all uppity and enraged, the fact that there was a disabled man inside the entrance to Kohls did not bother me in the least. What did was the fact that he was put there to try and sell Kohls credit cards. While this might be fine, well and good...the man could barely speak. He started his speech as soon as I opened the front door and had gotten the phrase 'Would you li.." out by the time it took me the 30 sec to reach him.

I am all for the advancement of disabled persons, but why put someone who is so debilitated that they can hardly sit in a wheelchair and who's speech is so afflicted that they can hardly form simple words, in the entrance to your store to sell credit cards?

I hate being accosted as soon as I walk into a store by ANYBODY, but why play the pity card and have this poor man try to sell things to a bunch of people that could no more be bothered to pick up a fallen old lady, let alone want to discuss the finer points of interest rates and late payment with Handiman?

As for me, I smiled brightly (making sure to hide my teeth so as not to cause him any more trauma to his life) and politely said, 'No thank you.'. Point is, I was a bit pissed at Kohls for putting this man out there to try and sell something that he was obviously not qualified to do.

That being said, I gave big props to Kohls for having a good supply of Christmas card in stock 2 days after Christmas.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. It seems a little crass of Khols.

At the same time, his employment opportunities might be limited to a position like that.

Sort of on topic...

There is a 'challenged' gentleman that works at the grocery store we go to. I am not sure what he does, he just seems to wander around having random conversations with customers and coworkers. It sort of freaks me out and when I am in there with my son I avoid him b/c he is somewhat scary looking.

I know, they would have sold so many more cards if they put a scantily clad stripper there to sell them. I would have bought one, and I have 6 credit cards already.

Agreed. Whatever the case, this guy's doing something other than sitting on his ass in front of the TV. I'll give him major props for that.

Exactly.

On the one hand, good for him that he's doing something besides staring out a window. But why not just have him as a regular 'greeter', why have him try to give a sales pitch in the .3 seconds you have someones attention?

And I was going to make a joke about the only position he's qualified for would be slumped over in a chair, but that would of been mean, so I didn't.

Exactly, there are perfectly healthy people out there sitting on their asses when they could be Kohl's greeters. Damn freeloaders

Closer to Sears or JC Pennys...a little more upscale than Marshalls or Ross.
