Question How to remove the front bumper?

Can someone please direct me as to how to remove the entire front bumper? If not the entire thing, what I REALLY need removed is the black part that sits under the license plate in the lower grill.

Tanks bunches and bunches.

Please tell me you're relocating your driving lights.......... not that there's anything wrong with them now

Ron, I think that black part IS part of the bumper. I don't have any tips, just wanted to heckle you about the lights. I thought you'd appreciate that

its pretty easy to take off the bumper, but Gonz is right. The black portion is part of the bumper.
Do some searching and digging and there should be a writeup somewhere

Gonz, I wasn't expecting any less!! Eh, those things are growing on my nerves the more I look at them. I'll come up with something (NO, I will NOT replace my fog lights!).

Evan, you mean... I gotta get off my lazy ass and spend a few hours searching???? Damn, I was hoping to get off easy

I kinda liked how you mounted them. (FWIW) There is a 'light bar' for the WRX somewhere out on the web. I'm considering buying that and mounting some driving lights to it.

Or just go the cheap way and make them bolt to my roof rack with a plug section just inside the car so I can remove them if needed.

Oh yeah... the point of me posting... if you want to dremel the black piece off, I have one you could borrow.

Ron,
As mentioned the front lower bumper is one peice. Typically, you remove the top bolts (near radiator), lower bolts (that hold on the lower trim pieces underneath the car) and a few screws on the inside front wheel well and then any other bolts, screws that look like they may be involved. A little tugging and the bumper pops off. Sometimes you have to remove drivinh lights and/or turn signals but I dont think this is the case with the WRXCount on there being at least a dozen screws/bolts. The most important thing to do is to place the removed screws in order so you can figure out how to put them back when you are finished. I have take off a few front bumpers on Japanese cars and it takes maybe a 1/2 hour if you are taking your time.

Hey Jim, I might take you up on that offer to borrow the Dremel.. I don't see any other way to do what I need to do.

Pete, thanks for the advice, I pretty much figured it would take some exploring. Since I don't know where all the screws and bolts are it might take me about an hour or so to remove the bumper....

most likely you can just cut the darn thing using a cut-off wheel on a dremel, the plastic is pretty thick in itself. I believe it's there to hide the reinforcement bar. There's probably over 22 plastic clips that hold the front bumper to the fenders, reinforcement bar, 2 on each side of the wheel well liner and about 5 or 6 on the skid plate as well.

From the looks of other WRX FMIC mounting, it seems to me it's a piece that is actually a two part connection. But again, it's probably something you'll have to cut at the joint and then just sand down the rest. The reason why I say it's two parts because of the paint vs. the plastic black piece. Otherwise that black piece would be painted as well from the factory.

Ron:

Maybe if you describe what you are planning to do, someone might come up with ideas how to do it without removing and destroying your bumper. Remember a new bumper cover costs $179 unpainted and with a professional paint job replacing the bumper cover is almost $500. So be careful.

Ron,

Um, let me work on that. I'm not sure if I'll be out there Friday. I'll let you know tomorrow.

(And I assume you won't break it. )

Oh yeah... I'm not positive (since I haven't used it yet) that I have all the cutting tools you'll need. You might need to run to Sears and get a bigger cutting tool (and a more bulky one, I think most of mine are just reinforced sandpaper). I think all the ones I have are only about 1/2" deep. If the plastic is thicker than this, you'll have a difficult time cutting it.

And one more thing, if you want a helping hand...I should be free for most of the day Sunday. LMK

yeah.. I thought about it and I probably won't remove my bumper.. too much work!! But seeing as though I'm gonna screw SOMETHING up.. if someone wants to offer help they're more than welcome to.

I will need to dremel an arch into the black molding and take out some of the foam so I can fit the lights into that space a bit better. I have something I can use as a bracket but I need to get it cut and it's stainless steel. I know someone who can do it, but it probably wont be cut until next week.

I plan on spending some time saturday if I can get a hold of a dremel to work out the space issues in the bumper.

Jim, you dont have to come out there if I can meet up with you somewhere else that night.. just let me know whats best for you. Judging by sight, the thickets part of the plastic will be where it rolls over from the front towards the radiator. That rolled part may be a little less than 1/2".. the rest should be much thinner.. then its just a matter of carefull extracting and modling the foam core.. ( I think)

-Ron

Edit: Jim I didn't read the part about you being free on sunday. If you are willing to help out I'll gladly take you up on the offer! That way, I have someone else to blame when I destroy my bumper!!

as long as you're hacking up your car I recommend a hacksaw. With the right blade you can go through most anything. Also, if you just get the little handle adaptor it can get into tight spots.

Be carefull with that Dremel, it's easy to get carried away, 'cause it's so much fun destroying and cutting things I'd loan you mine, but I think I'll be hacking up my center pod sometime this weekend.

OK, I'll let you know what the deal is by Friday afternoon. Its not that far from me to go to B&N. Or maybe we can find somewhere on your route to B&N that takes you near my house to meet up? We'll see tomorrow. Either way, it's yours to use as you wish.

Ah yes... the foam. I remember hacking apart my civic bumper to put in fog/driving lights... not fun with a hand saw (that had no spine support), but there was no foam to worry about at the bottom of the bumper. My guess is that you may want a better cutting tool though, the sandpaper things I have might not stand up to the abuse of cutting through the plastic. Might want to pick up a $0.50 metal one somewhere.

Sure thing, you can yell at me for mistakes you make all you like. I'll let you know when I get the dremel to you if I'm available Sunday. Sound good?

That might be a good idea to cut out the big parts and then sand them down with the dremel.

Yeah, next Friday you all will be asking why he has spots for 8 driving lights cut into the bumper.

The bumper...

Got a couple of options but really.. I was thinking that my work would be best. I don't know why I never thought of it before, but I do have a heated garage here Thing is it gets really crowded with kitchen cabinets, counters, and carpets and it's kinda narrow so it doesn't allow for TOO much extra space around the car.

I can talk to you tonight about how to get here. But I'm sure you know where the air park is in Gburg. Hey, I appreciate you coming around tonight.. actually.. since we'er working on it together you can just roll on by sunday with the gear.. up to you..

Just keep in touch..

Yep, I know where the airpark is. A garage would be nice and since once the bumper is off the car you no longer really need 'the car' to be around that should afford some space if you roll the car back out.

I'm afraid of forgetting it at home (I've done things like that before) so I'd rather pass it on to you so I don't make that mistake again.

See ya at B&N.

Just curious but where are the crash(?) sensors in the bumper that set off the airbag? Wouldn't want to cut through those.
