Default 05 wrx detonate? helix up and downpipe combo

well i have posted on other websites and i came here for more inputs about my situation. I have a Helix DP installed along with my HKS Hi Power cat back. I ordered my Helix up-pipe which i have NOT installed yet. My question is that i have read on other forums that having an up-pipe, downpipe, and cat back set up with the 05 model wrx's may lead to engine damage or detonation w/o having an engine management. Is this true? I really can’t come up with the money for an Accessport i just got out of high school and pursuing college right now during the summer. So I was wondering if have this set up is safe to run. Thanks!

read the sticky on the top of the forum. As for jdmmuscle... well, someone posted their AFRs stock a bit ago and you could see how lean it was during the OL/CL delay.

Stock boost you'll be fine (well no worse off than the factory), the CL -> OL delay is present with our without the uppipe / downpipe, and you'll still be holding 2 secs at 14.5 AFR regardless of whether or not you have the downpipes.

That being said an Ecutek reflash is highly recommended.

Cheers,

Gary

Except it can be worse. If you change the UP and DP and boost say 800 RPM sooner, then boost is coming on even SOONER and you could make a bad situation worse.

The only way to find out if you are in a bad situation is datalogging 619. Get a datalog of your car now to find out if your AFR's starting dropping at the onset of boost.

This is what you need to know:

WHen boost begins to come on in moderation (>4-5psi), are you AFR's dropping in the 12 and 11's. By 10 psi you should be in the 11's. If you're hitting a decent amout of boost and still running 14.7 AFR's, you're in trouble, and changing the exhaust pieces will just cause you to boost that much sooner, meaning you will detonate that much longer.

Hi,

Agreed, but keep in mind your ECU is pulling timing while the car is detonating. The uppipe and downpipe will definately bring your boost onset quicker, but I really don't think there is a whole lot of difference compared to stock as you would be detonating anyways - ie hitting full boost before you are into OL.

Therefore, I'd be inclined to say yes the addition of an uppipe and downpipe will make a bad situation worse, but not that much worse. We do recommend a reflash either way.

Cheers,

Gary

Off topic but do the 02 and 03 models have this problem with up/dp and catback. I am planning on doing this as soon as I get back from vacation. I cant in anyway afford to get em, and or blow up. heh. thanx

Nope, 02/03 has a very rapid CL / OL transition. It's just a variable in the ECU that can be adjusted with the Ecutek reflash.
