Fun story time!
So, I went to leave Detroit on Sunday after Son of SnoDrift, and in the process of checking my tire pressure, I noticed something was amiss! My front driver's side tire had a pretty significant blister on it. With 4200 miles on them. Not cool at all. That, and General does not have a road hazard warranty on them (despite the fact that this is obviously a manufacturing defect - there are absolutely no scratches, bruises, or even a tiny scrape on the sidewall) and there are no shops here who will warranty all four tires for me, since I need them all replaced at once. I've got a road hazard warranty back at the shop I bought them from in Battle Creek... but I'm in Detroit. So I talked to the shop back in BC, and they said if I bought ONE tire here to replace the bad one, take the bad one with me back to them, they'd refund me for the one tire/mounting/balancing. Whether or not they'll replace all four tires is yet to be seen. I'm really not going to be thrilled if they decide that running one tire with a different circumference than the other three is a good idea on an AWD car... I really like supporting local small mom & pop shops, but sometimes there's a benefit to getting stuff from big chains, especially when it comes to warranty work. Hopefully driving carefully home on slightly mismatched tires won't kill anything, right? |

You're fine for driving home on your bad tire (our cars come with donuts and they don't always match the tires size that we have installed), and if they will only replace the bad one, demand that they pay for a shop that can shave your new tire to the correct diameter. |

I think the subaru spec is the rolling circumference needs to be within 1/4". Not sure how that works seeing that my car came with a donut that is about 1" shorter than stock.
Do yer math and see if you're good. I think it's about 1/8" of tread wear will keep you in spec, which is about 20% of the life of most 10/32 tread tires. C=2*pi*R |

I had between 8 and 9/32s on my tires (about 5k miles) this past summer when I hit a chunk of debris in a construction zone and compromised the sidewall of one of my tires. Only replaced the one tire and haven't had any discernible issues 2500 miles later. I've heard 2/32" floating around a lot as a reference point.

I have general arctics and my front left tire did the same exact thing. Luckily the tread was not down far enough to need replacing of all the tires.

So, this is how Firestone in Royal Oak thought they'd balance my tire. Needless to say, it didn't work out very well. They expected me to drive out the door like that, all paid for. I'm in the process of complaining to corporate to say the very least. The amount of laziness and gross incompetence on display is absolutely stunning. They told me to come back later when I'd cleaned it myself, and they'd re-balance it. Thanks for the nice gouges in my clean WRX alloys, and crappy service, guys. Took me all of two minutes with a nozzle-less garden hose to clean it off myself. I'm sure using a bristle brush would have helped.

I'm not trying to step on your toes at all, but why did you give it to them in that condition in the first place? That looks like a hair/fiber, not a crack (it continues out in to the middle of the wheel, after the lip stops). I could be wrong though. |

I actually got them as clean as I could get them with a pay n spray wash with the wheels on the car before I handed them over. (It was a LOT worse beforehand.) The biggest issue was the fact that they mounted/balanced it like that, without saying a word to me, and gave me a half finished job. If they'd have told me to clean it, there wouldn't be a problem here. I assume the standard procedure is to brush the dang thing off at least. I knew it was dirty, but I figured they'd take the extra minute to brush it off cleaner than I could with it on the car... I don't think that's too much to ask, especially considering that I paid for the entire job, and cleaning the wheel for balancing is part of the job I paid for. And yeah, that's some kind of small piece of rubber leftover from the tire installation. Not a crack. Here's a picture of it after a quick hose off. Last edited by Tmibiker; 01-17-2013 at 05:37 PM. |

Hey all. Not from Kzoo, but frequent there often to visit my girlfriend at WMU. Maybe you've seen me around before. Haven't gone there recently with the car, only via Amtrak, but I was around a lot throughout the summer/fall. Had some wheel bearing issues and other things going on, but got that all taken care of now and might be in town soon.
At the MNM Subaru world record gathering in TC, where I met MadMax: Give me a wave if you see me! |

Hey Cliff! Glad to see you on here, let us know when you come back to kzoo and we can have a meet then.
I'll be at Bittersweet tomorrow (Saturday), since last weekend they weren't open, if anyone wants to join. Also, Tmibiker and I were talking about a possible Fourth Coast meet tonight if anyone is available. He finally got everything figured out with the tire/wheel situation. |

Just headers/exhaust, Tein coils, swaybars/endlinks and aesthetic mods. Sadly, I don't have the WedsSports anymore Traded them to a friend and he sold them. What I have now are some Euroline Type-N's: Kinda unconventional, I know. Decided to try out the stanced thing. But I do miss driving the car the way it was meant to be so some proper wheels with some meaty tires may be on the way. It's currently rolling on WRX stockers for the winter. Also, I have a brand new replacement fender for that ugly dent in the front, just waiting for paint. Will probably do that after winter. |
