Default Chicago Shop for Shortblock Replacement

So I know we have the shop recommendation thread, but it's not in good shape/kept up to date. I also want to get some kind of current recommendations.

Seems Mark is no longer at APM - had been working with him on a shortblock replacement for my 09 spec.B. Price was good, but they were a bit backed up. They've gone to a lot more backed up, maybe end of the year backed up.

I called Boostin, who seem to be about the only other active shop doing engine build work. They quoted over $7000 to do a stock EJ255 replacement. That's actually about $500-1000 over the dealer's estimate. Doesn't seem like a good choice.

Would welcome any suggestions of places to talk to. Have any other shops opened up? Anyone know a good non-shop mechanic to do a stock EJ255 replacement?

Why not take it to any independent shop that does good work? Anyone should be able pull it off. I find subarus easy to work on.

I'm completely OK with that - do you know of any you would recommend?

Not in your neck of the woods. I'm way southwest of you. I'm sure some members will be along shortly that can recommend some in your area. If our lift wasn't down at the moment, I would tackle it but having back problems and no lift is a strain. Did you purchase the shortblock yet?

Oof, called in and spoke with someone and he quoted me about $8000 for a stock replacement.

I haven't - didn't want to leave it sitting in a crate until I had someone to do the replacement. Also completely fine with sourcing it through the shop and letting them make some $ off that. I hope I'm not being unreasonable, but did prices on this go way up? I thought a EJ255 SB replacement could be done normally around 5000-6000 in the past (and in fact had been quoted around the 5k mark before).
