Hope it does well. It's been a dream of mine for the last few years to run in the One Lap; however I want to do it in my Studebaker Lark, just to show it can be done and to draw attention to the marque. I'm one of the youngest members of the Studebaker Drivers Club and, like WWII veterans, our ranks get smaller by the day. Attracting new blood to a club for cars that haven't been built since 1966 is very difficult.
Oh...and to keep this post on-topic; like all SG Foresters with MTs, all postwar MT Studebakers have Hill Holder clutches. Maybe some of you should've gotten a Studebaker to practice your HH technique on! Ed |

Will do. Thing is I'm not sure whether I'd use my current car or buy another and build it up just for the One Lap.
Mine has the 170 ci OHV inline 6 that first appeared in flathead form in the 1939 Champion. Imagine if you will an engine with 112 hp moving a car the size of the current Buick LeSabre and you get the idea. My car can cruise all day at 65-70 (I've had it up to 85 once, but not for long) but that's not competitive for One Lap. I'm not in it to win it, mind you, but to finish, but even the One Lap admins probably have their limits. What I'd probably do is find a V8 powered Lark (beefier frame than the cars with sixes) and build it up. The Stude 289 smallblock has a really solid bottom end and can be built up to be a real monster. 289s with the factory option Paxton supercharger (called "R2" - ha! another Subie parallel!) were rated at 290 hp. R2 powered Larks, Hawks and Avantis set speed records at Bonneville back in the day (the slippery Avantis ran > 170 mph); even now R2 Larks are running low 13s at the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags. I'd prefer a 2-door sedan (lightest weight of the line) but I could be my own support vehicle with a Wagonaire - the car that inspired the GMC Envoy XUV: OTOH I could end up with a Forester XT and make it a team effort... |

Lark6: You ever see what Ted Harbit had done with the
R3 1964 Lark Challanger that the Krems (sp) brothers have? It had run in the mid 12's at 113+ in the quarter mile and compets in the stock appearing drags. If you do a searck for "Chicken Hawk" or "Ted Harbit" you can see what a Studebaker can do with a little modern technology. |

and '64 Challenger ("plain brown wrapper") 2-door sedans that Ted and the Krems run. I searched and found this quote about the '63: Quote:
One of those with taller rear end gearing - 3.31 or 3.73 (which is what I have) rather than the 4.11+ the drag cars run - would be my ideal One Lap car. The Chicken Hawk is a neat car too: Avantis are an acquired taste. People either love or hate their looks but there's no denying they're fast because they're so slippery. An Avanti can be tough to live with given that they're fiberglass plus they get hot under the hood and in the cockpit. For now I'll stick with the stubby little Larks. Ed PS: I often kid with the Stude guys that I bought a Subaru so that I could be lazy when I flipped through the parts catalogs at NAPA. "Studebaker" and "Subaru" usualy come in alphabetical order, at least when the catalogs still reference Studebaker! * The monthly magazine of the SDC. One of the best single-marque pubications I've ever seen. Last edited by lark6; 04-24-2004 at 01:16 PM. |
