Cruise control doesn't work on my 99 Forester
Hi,
I have a 99 Forester with manual transmission, but the cruise control hasn't worked since we bought it 4 months ago. We spoke to the previous owner and she doesn't ever remember using it, but I suspect this hasn't worked since the security system was installed at new, as the cabling is a mess under the dash. The light comes on when you hit the button but nothing happens when you set the cruise with the lever. I've checked the fuse, and the connections on the cruise control unit, the clutch switch, and the brake switch and they all look good. Does anyone have a rough idea where I should look next? I think if I take it to a dealer to diagnose they'll charge a fortune. Thanks for any help, Alan.

it doesn't work at any speed (even between 25 and 90mph).
I'll take a look at the clutch arm and the brake arm when my wife brings the car home tonight. |

Thanks for the help - I looked at the clutch arm this morning and noticed that the stopper was missing, making the cruise control think that the cutch was continuiously depressed.
I went into my nearest dealer and ordered the part, but a piece of electrical tape is doing a good temporary job in the mean time. |

Just imagine how an unscruplous dealer could take advantage of an unwitting customer with something like this. It would take a tech all of 1 minute to diagnose the problem, yet they could charge an hour or two labor, plus some parts (billed but not installed). Most people who don't know anything about cars, and even some who DO know about cars, wouldn't have any idea what's up. |

I'm having a problem with my cruise also. I can set the speed and and slow down while in cruise, but the accelerate/resume and the cancel don't work. I guess it would be the switch lever that's messed up, but I'm not sure. Anyone else have this problem?
