I want to update this post. A few days after the CEL went away it came back, and Ive been fighting it ever since. It has since gone away once more, only to return the following day. Both times it cleared itself, the weather was cool. Once again going through this list...

1. Cold air intakes - None. Stock airbox.
2. Stock airbox not sealed - Pulled and resealed it before. Still looks fine.
3. Hose leaks, generic air leaks - This is what Im leaning towards. I checked all of the hoses I could to make sure none had come loose or popped off and found nothing. When idling, my boost gauge will fluctuate between 18-22 mmHg, sometimes more. I figure this is because of a vacuum leak somewhere. My TMIC hoses are on with t-bolts. I had a feeling that my stock turbo inlet had gotten ripped during the turbo swap, so I picked up a Gimmick unit. It didnt help. All of the connections after the Gimmick install were double checked. I did find that one of the hoses coming from the black thing that sits just to the right of the elbow in the inlet had a small tear in it. Replacing it gave no change, though.
4. Fuel pressure regulator - Rechecked this and its connected and the hose does not seem to have any tears/cracks.
5. Check all ground connections - Grounds look good. All are tight and not corroded.
6. Injector problems - Ran two bottles of fuel system cleaner through it, no help.
7. MAF sensor gone bad/dirty - I cleaned this with alcohol + qtips and it didnt help. I may try getting some MAF cleaner from the autoparts store to be sure.
8. Front oxygen (o2) sensor - reading the same as my 3 month old Innovate wideband. Car is not dumping fuel and mpg is about the same.
9. You are truly running rich/lean and the ECU is not happy, thus the code is legitimate. - The code is legit. My wideband is reading close to 16:1 at idle, as is the stock O2.
10. Dirty Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) - just cleaned, CEL still on.

Mods on the car are as follows:

Blouch TD05H 18G 8cm^2
STi TMIC
Deatschwerks 740cc injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Perrin EBCS
Gimmick Turbo Inlet
HKS UP
Invidia TBE

Im not really sure where to go from here. Again the CEL first came on after I installed the turbo, BCS, and injectors. I am hitting target AFR in closed loop cruising/accelerating. My idle is rough and AFR is quite high at idle. Under WOT pulls, I hit my target AFR of 11.2:1 until about 4500rpm, and by 5000 it creeps up to 12:1. I haven't taken it any higher than that for obvious safety reasons. Any advice?

****UPDATE****

After exhausting/ruling out all of the fixes in this thread, I started looking at my injectors. Seems that even though DW claims that their 740cc injectors can use stock latency settings, they cannot. Many people in the open source community have been siginificantly altering latencies in order to get fuel trims right. I upped my latencies in RomRaider by ~40% over stock. Upon starting the car after reflash, AF Correction was no longer pegged at +25 (which causes the CEL to be triggered). The car idled MUCH smoother, and richened up at WOT slightly. I still need to play with the open loop fueling to get my target AFRs at WOT, but my CEL is gone gone gone.

Sucks that it caused me so many headaches, but Im glad that Ive finally got it fixed.

Awesome post. I found I had the same cel. I have at least two of the listed problems, air filter was not sealed properly (I put it in with low light, thought I had it, but not so much). Also my MAF had not been cleaned. Ever. 87K. Here is a pic before:

and after

I think I've made an OBDII cycle and it hasn't come back, but time will tell...

I just drove from Indiana to Washington after installing my new motor, drove for a couple of weeks and had no problems. I put the car on the dyno and now I'm getting this code. I'm sure I have a vac leak because my boost gauge is reading just below 0 in vac. I checked all of my intercooler piping and it seems to be tight. Where else should I check that could be causing this.

Check the intake pre-turbo. Any of the lines that connect to the turbo inlet could be loose/cracked/disconnected, or the intake piping itself could have developed a leak.

Question Boost gauge?

Opinions? I got the same CEL, I got an SRS exhaust, Greddy blowoff valve - full atmosphere and Glowshift Boost and air/fuel gauge hooked up. The boost gauge recently stopped working and I think not to long after the CEL showed up. This might be a dumb question but is it vacuum type hose for the gauge, what would cause the gauge it not to work and would this throw the code? It might be obvious but trying to verify the mechanics behind this, what is the gauge actually connected too?. Also Im actually hoping this is why.

If there is a tube connected to your gauge then you have mechanical and its possible leak might cause your problem if there is only wires coming out then the problem will be somewhere else.

it is a mechanical gauge.

So find the leak fix it reset ECU and watch... This code will usually show after long constant drive, that's the time when computer check your system for any abnormalities.

I've been fighting the P0171 for about 2 months now and I've been reluctant to take the car to the dealership because I knew it was something simple.

Like other posters I've tried everything on the OPs list and still no dice.

I also had another symptom and this may/may not be a good way to check for this particular issue. I explain below.

I have the P0171 that comes on when the car is idle. I get off the highway, come down to a stop light, sit there for a couple minutes and boom, CEL would come on 0171. I'm driving around town, going to work or whatever, hit the drive through to grab breakfast and sitting in the drive through, 0171 would come on. I kept resetting it with my AP because the car ran completely fine. Only at idle would I experience this condition. I reset it because once the light came on the ECU would start dumping gas in to the engine and I'd get about 200 miles per tank of gas.

I thought the 0171 issue and the below issue were separate but it turns out they were the same issue and this 'test' actually helped point right at the problem (next paragraph).

Whenever I would go to a 'touchless' car wash, the kind with just the sprayers that spray high pressure water under/around/at the car, my CEL would blink which indicates a misfire. The idle would get rough then smooth then rough and the light would flash but after the wash was over, the light would shut off and all was well again. The AP showed no code for this misfire.

As it turns out, and as I've read in a couple others diagnosis of this issue, the passenger side intake manifold-to-TGV has 6 bolts/nuts holding it down. My car has 68k miles and apparently these loosen over time. They were all about 1/2 to 1 full turn NOT hand tight. These 10mm bolts require 6.1 ft/lbs torque which isn't alot and they can loosen over time.

I torqued them all down and now the CEL does not come on anymore. P0171 gone, and the car wash no longer makes the CEL blink for misfire. Seems that at idle under vacuum it was pulling in the water misted air causing the misfire and under normal conditions was pulling in additional unmetered air causing the lean condition at idle.

When you are on WOT, this small amount of air does not matter because the intake is under pressure, not vacuum, so some of the metered air would get 'out' but the unmetered air entering at idle is what caused the code to be thrown.

So check both sides of where the intake manifold bolts down to the TGVs on both sides. On my car, the driver side was exactly to spec, 6.1 ft/lbs.
Its curious that both I and another guy had this issue on the passenger side only.

He said his intake manifold gasket was blown and it had to be replace but mine just required re-torqueing the bolts/nuts located here.

Probably saved me a few to many hundreds of dollars over taking it to the dealership.

Great find Cinnabuns, thanks for sharing! The thing I find interesting is, unlike so many error codes in our lives that are 100% meaningless, this one was still related to the real error code: unmetered air was making it's way into the engine.

If only Microsoft Windows was a little more helpful...

My is gone as well it just despaired after many hours spend tracking down other issue. (replaced cracked headers, new o2 sensor, new turbo inlet pipe, multiple leak test (air and smoke), new dyno tune)

I'm hoping that maybe someone could help me with this before I grab a new o2 sensor in hope for the fix.

2005 WRX: Autospeed Turboback, Uppipe, AP v.1, K&N Short Ram, Samco IC hoses. The car just hit 20k miles today (I know, I don't travel much). Also, the car is a 4eat (yeah yeah, I know).

Up until the other day, I experiences no problems with my current setup, which I've had on the car for about ~2 years. The other day the filter on the intake looked dirty so I bought the recharge kit, followed the instructions and than began receiving the code.

It looks like I accidently put too much of the oil onto the filter, so I believe the o2 sensor is the problem. The car runs extremely rough at idle and as I'm driving occasionally; at idle, the car will rise and jump at random numbers (usually between 500k and 1000k or even higher). Earlier, the car even almost stalled.

Sorry for the length, but I figure the more information the better chance for help

far more likely you fouled your maf.

it's quite hard to mess up your o2 sensor by over oiling an air filter.

I cleaned the maf (with actual maf cleaner). Could it be that the maf needs to be replaced rather than the o2 sensor?

Well my father decided to buy a new obdII scanner today so I gave it a shot as it gives you a "freeze frame" of the reading. Here is the information it gives; maybe this will help?

DTC for which Freeze Frame was Stored P0171
Fuel system 1 status closed loop
Calculated LOAD Value 1.15%
Engine Coolant Temp 194° F
Short Term Fuel Trim – Bank 1 25%
Long term fuel trim - bank 1 2.34%
Intake manifold absolute pressure 13.92 inHg
Engine RPM 729.75 rpm
Ignition Timing Advance #1 Cylinder 12 °
Intake Air Temp 107.60°F
Air Flow Rate Mass Air Flow Sensor 0.36 lb/min
Absolute Throttle Position 12.16%

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated: I don't want to throw away money that isn't needed!

it is odd that long term trim is not +/- 25%, which is the "max."

that is usually the threshold for a system too lean/rich CEL.

on the other hand, there are actually 4 ranges of long term fuel trims, at four different ranges of maf. you are only seeing one of them with this freeze frame data. the other ranges could be out of authority.

Meaning what exactly (sorry for the noob-ness)?

Here is a video of how the car's sounding right now.

Also, does anybody know of the 06 wrx's have the same maf sensor unit?
