Default Canadian AVIC-X9310BT in a USDM 2011 STI | OEM Plug and Play | Navigation

A bit of back story. I hated the stock radio in my hatch. Everyone knows the stock radios are garbage. I found the thread outlining the 2011 Forester premium radio and liked the screen and better sound. It is damn near impossible to find a USDM one, so I purchased the Chinese Forester radio from eBay. This was great for a while but I still wanted a larger touch screen and nav. I despise wiring. My mission for a radio is I wanted plug and play, and didn't want to mess with harnesses and steering wheel controls and splicing wires. I also wanted to keep this under $500. I found the solution to my problems in the Canadian Pioneer AVIC-X9310BT.

I found a Pioneer AVIC-X9310BT for sale on eBay, salvaged from a wrecked Nissan. The 9310 is the Canadian cousin to the 930 and is identical in every way. The reason this is such a good find is this radio comes as an option on Canadian 2012-2013 STIs with the Sport Tec package. This mean these are essentially a plug and play solution for our cars. The only thing that they need is a proprietary harness made by Pioneer of Canada.

Pioneer of Canada will not ship to the US. I had to have them ship to a friend in Torono, and they forwarded it down to me in KC. It took a total of 2 weeks but finally made it to me.

Things that are plug and play:
-Power
-Sound to all speakers
-Steering Wheel Radio Controls

Things that are NOT plug and play:
-BT Mic
-Center Console USB & Audio Jack

Tools:
-Phillips Head Screw Driver
-Plastic Trim Prying Tool
-Foam Tape (stop rattles)
-Zip Ties

Optional:
-Wire strippers
-Soldering Iron

Components:
-Pioneer AVIC-X9310BT
-GPS Antenna (P/N ???)
-BT Microphone Cable CPM1083
-USB Audio Cable CDP1425
-Pioneer RCA Cord CDP1375
-Pioneer Subaru Harness P/N: SWI-PSUBFSTI/EX (Contact Pioneer of Canada for Ordering details HERE)
-JDM AV Panel (Subaru 66065SC030 or Japanparts 317-008-028 or)

Optional Components:
-Pioneer Traffic Tuner ND-TMC10
-Pioneer iPod Cable CD-IU51V
-Backup Camera

(click on a part to be taken to the OEM page. Obviously you can order similar items off of eBay. Choose whichever you want)

Walkthrough:

The unit. This is in 9.5/10 condition for being used.

Rear of the unit.

Here is the full harness I ordered from Pioneer of Canada.

The black connector on the right goes into the back of the radio. The purple and green wire I taped off and are not used. The plug in the top left is what connects to the factory Subaru vehicle harness. In the middle is the PAC steering wheel module. The small 3.5mm plug also goes into the back of the radio. Below, the long cable coming off to the bottom left I taped off and is not used. I am not sure what that is for.

Close up of the PAC and the Pioneer part number for the whole harness.

Close up of the plug that connects to the factory Subaru harness.

Here is the Pioneer RCA Cord CDP1375. You can see the yellow mute wire. This is the wire you need to move pins and ground. This is all detailed in Post #2 in the Handbrake Bypass section.
This connection allows for AMP hookup and includes front and rear speakers (4x short red and white) , reverse camera (brown), Audio and video In (red, white, yellow) and rear monitor outputs (long red and white). This all gets plugged into the back of the radio.
I am currently only utilizing the mute wire. Everything else I just taped up in foam. This offers great future expandability to the system. Probably going to use the A/V in for a N64 and have some good Mario Kart on road trips to the lake.

I don't have much of the actual install, it was ridiculously hot out and I just wanted to get it done. It's pretty straight forward if you have changed the stock radio before.
If you have never done it, it's not too difficult. Below is a good video for any one doing this for the first time.

After that It is just plug and play. Transfer the metal radio brackets from the stock unit to the Pioneer. Use the Pioneer harness and refer to the numbered picture above for what connections are and are not used. Anything that is unused I wrapped in foam tape to prevent rattles.

Be sure to connect the stock radio ground. The Pioneer unit doesn't have a tab on the back so I used the one on the stock left radio bracket.

Here I removed the middle duct work to show how everything is taped/ziptied out of the way. Removing this duct is not necessary, it just helped me stop any rattles from even starting.

Thats all that is necessary as far as stock connectors. Next you need to figure out what to do with the 3 items that are not plug and play.

1. First up is the USB and Audio connections. I had a few options here, I could solder in the new Pioneer with the existing wiring. I want reversible so I avoided that. You could them route them to the glovebox. I thought it was a little to messy as I already have a bunch of stuff in there. I opted to route them to the existing connection in the center console and remove the stock USB & Audio. See post #12 of this thread or click HERE for the specifics.

2. Next is routing the BT Mic. I chose to run it up the A-Pillar and use double sided tape to attach it to the corner of the windshield. This is all straight forward as well. Here is a thread that documents removing the A-Pillar well. Just remember to use tape/zipties and foam tape to prevent more rattles. This is for the passenger side, but it is the same procedure for the driver side.

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/3779370-post1.html

3. As for the 3 BT buttons on the lower left of the steering wheel. I just left them in place. I never really used them anyways. Whenever I get a phone call I immediately look at the screen to see who is calling, so it's just natural to press the screen to answer and hang up.
I may remove the buttons down the road to clean it up a little.

Update: I was messing around with the buttons and discovered that the 3rd BT steering wheel button is a shortcut on the unit to the phone menu. Very cool. The top two still do nothing, I read that the Pioneer units do not support answer and hang up steering wheel buttons. I also found out the PAC module can be reprogrammed and I can possibly use these 2 extra BT wheel buttons as separate shortcuts. I need to look into it more.

Not Complete Yet:
-JDM AV Panel: I am dealing with the gaps for now. I will most likely order this soon with the larger JDM dual center console.
-Traffic Module: I have yet to pick up the Pioneer Traffic module and try it out. I don't have much traffic in my daily commute, so I may skip this for a while.
-iPod Cable: I am just using a standard USB cable and it works fine for now. I generally stream over bluetooth anyways.
-Back Up Cam: I will get to this some time, in the mean time I just look over my shoulder. Old school.

Popular hacks for the X930 & X9310

This is meant as an index. I wanted to go into more detail for each hack. Click the bold title below and it will take you to the post in detail.

1. Move USB and Aux to OEM Location

2. Handbrake Bypass

3. Update to X940 GUI and 2012 Maps
Step #1

Step #2

4. Torque App Gauges (Work in Progress)

5. Remove GPS warning prompt

I have not read into this one too much. Seems like it goes into testmode again and has the potential to brick your unit. I would want to research more before I do this.

http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/...n-bypass-hack/

6. Remove Backup Cam Warning

This will only come in handy when you install a backup cam. Seems to be a great mod to get rid of the text and the degraded camera video from the overlay. It is also a sticky on AVIC411 and from the same thread above.

I guess I'm not really sure what the issue is here... what is / isn't supposed to light up? Or is it just the fact that the dash lights are coming on? If they aren't supposed to come on at all then the only thing I could think of is the illumination wire. Try disconnecting / cutting the orange wire and see if it goes away. Also, did you only use the radio bracket for the ground or did you use the ground in the harness as well? If you can, take some pics of the harness you have.

I got it all figured out. I misspoke, in position 3 the check engine, center diff, and traction lights are on. I had a few people message me and let me know these were all normal. In position 2 only the radio is on.

Everything is working normal, I just had it in my head that since I didn't use all the plugs that something must be wrong. I guess I just never noticed the other dash lights on in the 3rd key position.

Editing first post to get rid of confusing info.

The X9310BT is the OEM version of the X930BT, not the Canadian version. We Canadians could buy the X930BT in stores here.

If you kept it under $500 you got a really good deal, but if you were buying new you could probably use all the harnesses from the CDM X9310BT installation to put in a Z140BT or a X940BT. Not sure if the Z150BT/X950BT use the same connections still (but they probably do).

Here's my thread on the Sport-Tech model upgrades: Dissection of a 2012 Canadian Domestic Market "Sport-Tech" STi's audio upgrades

Now that you have your X9310BT working you can do some neat stuff to it. Avic411.com's forums will tell you how to get the latest available maps on it (big improvement from stock), how to hack the software to remove the 'press OK to use the nav, you idiot' nag screen, and how to allow certain operations to occur while you're driving while still keeping video disabled safely (European model safe mode disable). I use the safe mode disable to allow the screen to be turned off while driving - seriously, who the hell thought disabling the 'screen off' feature while driving was a good idea????

I also put an excellent 'Subaru Tecnica International' with cherry blossom petals image as a loading screen, but I can't find it right now.

Very nice! I retrofitted a USDM FujitsuTen OEM Navigation HU into mine and love it. Took a lot of researching and help from SVXDc to get that thing to work properly now. It is also a big sound improvement from teh standard stock HU.

Evilspoons, thank you for all the info. I did stumble on that avic411 today and it has a ton of great info. As I get this together I will include any "hacks" I do to the unit.

I did already do the handbrake override. Tested out with a DVD today and works great.

One question, are your USB and audio in jacks in the center console? How are they hooked into the HU? I have my stock ones in the center console but can't hook them to the harness. I currently have the pioneer USB audio cable routed to my glovebox. I would love to relocate this back to the center console.

Also what are the green and purple wires coming off the wire harness for? I don't have anywhere to connect them. I feel like they are the reverse signal and vsss.

(pic removed)
Same with this connector, no idea where this white one goes. Any thoughts?
(pic removed)

Luan, your thread made me want to upgrade to a real HU. What I wanted to avoid was the nightmare of wiring with SVXdc. He is an awesome dude and has answered a ton of my questions. I just know he is super busy and I wanted plug and play.

Reverse and VSS are not hooked up on the CDM cars. I had to hook up the reverse signal by tapping in to a wire near the passenger's feet and running it through the dashboard. I think it went to that purple wire with the bullet plug, but I can't say for sure. The bullet plug may have been for the power antenna. Either way, it wasn't connected to anything in my car stock.

I'm not really sure about that green wire. If it's in position 10 on the connector, then it is VSS, but I don't remember seeing that at all.

Here is a diagram from a DIFFERENT Pioneer head unit. It is not 100% the same as the X930BT, but the reverse signal was in the right place, anyway (pin 11). Also keep in mind these are Pioneer's colours, not the Subaru<->Pioneer harness colours, which made things annoyingly difficult when attempting to reference the X9310BT's install manual.

That square white 4-pin connector plugs into the IP-BUS module that then connects to the Sirius tuner. If you have an XM tuner, it will probably plug straight in to that 4-pin thing.

My USB and audio-in jacks are indeed in the center console box and they work the way you'd expect them too. I haven't had a good look at the wiring, unfortunately, but I think you can just buy a USB cable, cut the end off, and solder it to your center console wiring... that info is somewhere on here (nasioc), DIYMA forums, or one of the other Impreza forums (IWSTI maybe).

Thank you, you have helped me out a ton! I was hoping I would find a helpful Canadian that wasn't afraid to tear out some wires for me. That answers most of my questions. It also helps that you are an EE, I'm a dumb ME and despise wiring haha.

Do you know if there is a way to set a "screen saver" on a timer on this unit. So say after 30 seconds of not touching it, it will display an image? That was on the Forester radio and I loved it since it was less distracting.

As for the center console USB, I was going to order a spare OEM one and either solder the Pioneer cable to it, or epoxy the plugs directly to the plastic trim piece. That way I have a way to revert back to stock without ever messing with my stock center USB. If anyone reading this has a Subaru P/N for the 2011 WRX/STI center console USB and audio jack plug and plastic trim piece, that would help me out a ton.

I think I may need to epoxy the pioneer cable in. I was reading an IWSTI thread where SVXdc claims there is a difference between the audio jacks. The pioneer one is a 4 pole that sends a video signal where the OEM jack is just the 3 pole for audio. This way j could play video off of the iPod in the center with the Pioneer iPod cable.

In the mean time I'll take a pic of it and send it to Fred beans and see if he can source it.

And yeah I sourced this all under $400, I got pretty lucky so far.

Yeah, Subaru did screw up and use a 3-pole connection for the audio jack... but I don't care about the iPod video anyway, haha.

I saw the part number just the other day on another site, I think it was a discussion on IWSTI but it might have been 3G Impreza(?) forums. All I remember is that it was $90 for the unit.

That's a lot of $$ just to hack up. Wonder if I could source the Canadian/Pioneer one that is stock in your car. If you ever tear into it, let me know how it is wired up. I would imagine it is the same as a USDM one and Pioneer just created a simple pigtail harness to go from their radio to the Subaru harness. I kind of doubt that though or else it would have been included with the harness I received.

1. Move USB and Aux to OEM Location:

Came up with a new solution.

First remove the center console pieces so you have access to everything underneath. Here is a good video on how to do it. Be careful as these clips are really easy to break.

The USB panel in the center console can pop off.

Once you remove the center console you can take out the USB assembly. The audio board is held in by one screw.

I removed that and modified the Pioneer cable to fit in the trim panel. A little dab of hot glue and it looks OEM.

I used hot glue instead of epoxy so it is strong enough for daily use but is still easily reversible.

Routing the cable from the unit to the console was easy. Just use a flash light to find holes and gaps larger enough to get through. I used plenty of zip ties and foam tape to hold it to existing cable and prevent rattles. Once you remove the two stock harnesses from the stock USB and Audio make user you tape the connectors in foam tape and zip tie somewhere out of the way.

where's the stock blue tooth mic at? any chance of wiring that up instead or putting the mic there like you did with the center console (nice work btw)?

BT mic in the stock car is hidden in the map light. If you look at it you ca see the slots in the plastic to let sound travel through. As far as I know it is not possible to get the stock mic to work with aftermarket. It would require cutting and soldering, something I want to avoid as I like reversible if I ever want to go back to stock.

This unit comes with it's own BT mic that I am going to run up the A Pillar and hide by the headliner.

Nice job with the center console.

Subaru of Canada puts the mic just to the right of the driver's sun visor, clipped on to the headliner. It's a bit goofy because if you adjust it to point straight at the driver the visor will hit it, but I don't have any problems with people hearing me when it's not pointed straight at me anyway.

Thank you! Yeah I was just going to stick it in the top corner of the windshield and see if it blends in with the A-Pillar.

Saw your thread HERE. Did you ever install a backup camera?

I did, actually, before any other stereo modifications.

I had to buy that harness you got from Amazon, and then I hooked in a Clarion reverse camera (this one: http://www.amazon.com/Clarion-CC4001U-Rear-Vision-Camera/dp/B004M4TW54 ). It stays powered all the time (none of that 'hook it to your reverse bulb' crap). I can't remember where I pulled power from, but I ran the cables through the hatch, out the existing wiring tube thing, down the right side of the hatch area, under the rear seat, and then under the center console up to the back of the head unit.

I installed the camera itself to the left of the left license plate bulb, and drilled a tiny hole in the license plate bulb cover to bring the wire through and then put some caulk around it to keep it from leaking.

Awesome info, I will have to look into a camera more. You have any more info on that "automatic EQ microphone" you were talking about in your first thread?

I found this, but it doesn't have the AVIC units listed as compatible.

Wow that took forever, finished writing up the walk through. I didn't go as thorough with the pictures as I would have liked, but I subbed in some youtube where appropriate for the easy stuff. I also created a good collection of hacks and fun stuff in the 2nd post. I really want to try the Torque app on the unused A/V In.

Just loaded up a nice loading screen. All credit to GOFASTSTI on IWSTI for this.

That is the mic that I have, or at least it looks identical. Mine came with my Pioneer home theatre receiver. It's possible the mic inside is a bit different and that could throw off the auto calibration, but it seems to work well enough anyway.

They list the "official" X930BT calibration mic as a CD-MC20, see here: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...onents/CD-MC20

Here's a picture of my backup camera... it's dirty as hell but you can see what's going on, anyway:

backup camera by slipstream3d, on Flickr

Also note that while you can remove the text overlay from the reverse camera, it will not improve the degraded picture quality. You're still superimposing text on the video - you're just putting a bunch of empty spaces on top instead of letters.

Is there any way to get the Canadian wiring harness here in the states? I know you said that it can only be ordered in Canada and can't be shipped to the US but any chance there are members who could order and ship these out to us less fortunate Americans?

I would have been willing to do this, but I contacted my friend and she would not like to ship any more down here. It cost ~$15 to forward to me and she doesn't have PayPal, she ate the charges and I owe her a couple beers next time I see her. You may have some luck PMing a few nice Canadians around these boards. Never hurts to ask.

As an update, I am loving this radio. I just ordered a cheap used Android Galaxy S and will try to get the Torque gauges working with the unused video in. Shouldn't be a bad deal since I sourced everything for ~$50. Will update the write up with my results in a few weeks. Just debating how and where to tap into power the phone all the time.

2. Handbrake Bypass:

Edit: See SVXdc's comment below for proper way to bypass radio.

When you do this mod, you do not need to ground the AVIC's parking brake lead. That may have been required for the earliest AVIC models, but everything since at least the Z120 / X920 and later do not need that. Many of my customers have confirmed this.

Just insulate the end of the AVIC's brake wire, and ground the bypass wire.

Also, AVIC models that were intended for markets outside of the USA and Canada (e.g., Europe, Australia, etc.) may not need the bypass hack. On those HUs, you can simply ground the AVIC's parking brake lead. Try it and see.

Incidentally, I have factory-made wires with the proper pin to fit the AVIC's RCA harness, so you won't even have to extract their mute wire. I only sell these with other items (or as a pack of 10 or more for installers or a group-buy).
Original Post:

This was the first thing I did. I did not need to follow the video as I bought this used and the previous owner already moved the yellow mute pin. This is on the Pioneer RCA Cord CDP1375. You need to remove the pin and yellow with black stripe wire and move it UP one slot. Here is the the harness with the pin moved to the correct spot.

After that just solder on a wire and ground it to the radio chassis.

I tested out with a DVD and everything works perfectly. You can also play from the SD card. I have yet to get a video to work. Here are a few settings another user was successful with for the popular Handbrake PC video converter. I tried one video but these settings didn't get it to play. Will keep trying.

3. Update to X940 GUI and 2012 Maps

Just updated my unit to the X940 with a super easy method. The user interface is nearly the same, but the Maps and Navigation are miles better. Everything is quicker. There is also added functionality for Android users over BT.

All credit to this thread HERE.

Click the bold underlined links to download the necessary files.

Powered the unit up, popped in the SD card, and within about 5 seconds it picked it up and asked to start the update.

That update process took about 20 minutes

Once that's done the unit reboots and finishes updating

After that, you're greeted with language setup options

Once that's done, the update is complete!

By the way, if you're using a custom start up splash screen (as I am), you will not see any 2012 Pioneer splash screen for confirmation, because you're custom one is still going to show, so don't freak out when that doesn't show up upon the unit rebooting, lol.

After you go through the language setup, it's going to ask to do the update again. If you don't want to sit there for another 20 minutes, hit no...

To update the bluetooth firmware, go into your settings menu

Go into the bluetooth settings menu, and scroll to the bottom where you'll find the firmware update option

Press it and it'll show you your current firmware and under that will be the option to update it

Once that's pressed, you're prompted with one more confirmation of the update showing you version info of what you're currently running and what's going to be installed

Hit yes and wait for it to update; takes about 3 or 4 minutes to complete

Once that's done, you'll have the new app connection option for bluetooth or wired connection

Pair to your Android phone (which you will have to do over again since you updated the bluetooth firmware which erased any stored phones) and you'll get a new list of options in you sources!

And for final proof of the successful update

It was extremely simple and worked perfectly.

An alternate way is to purchase the eBay SD card. I believe all the seller has done is download these files onto a 4 gig card and sells it to you. Once you put the files on the card it really is stupid proof.
