At work, we check machine bearings with a ultrasound meter to locate the bad bearing quickly. When it's pegging around 100dB over a normal/new/typical bearing, it's time to change it to prevent a failure while the machine is running later in the day.

Of course, a noisy bearing may last a good long time and a quiet one can suddenly freeze if something wears really fast for some reason. It's not an exact science, but noise is a good indicator of friction and the whole point of a bearing is a smooth rotational motion. Lack of grease, dust/dirt contamination or excess wear can create more and more friction and therefore it's more and more likely to seize.

So my point was that a bearing that is making noise on Day 1 is probably not the best made bearing in the world. OTOH, I had a bearing squeak on my first car for over 6 years and the TOB never seized.

Thanks for such an informative reply -- makes sense.

I guess I'm hoping that the case here is closest to your last sentence, because based on various replies in this thread it sounds like there's not much Subaru dealers can do about the problem right now.

Tranny dropped at the dealer. The clutch and the flywheel ok. They'll be replacing the pilot and the release bearings under the warranty.
In my case, the fact that the bearing started making noise when the grittiness was present and that I recorded the noise helped a lot. The dealer decided to do the work right away.

I'm starting to get the chirping noise too. I was pulling into my parking spot at work and I could faintly hear it chirping I pulled out my phone and tried to record it but as soon as I did and pressed the clutch in the grittiness went away and the chirping stopped just like that.. I hate this issue.. It seems to be getting worse, but even more unpredictable now

Once it started chirping for me, it did it every time the problem was there.

It's been almost a week since I got my car back and so far so good.
It feels really good being able to push the car again without the clutch getting weird.

P.S. the noise really makes the diagnosis easier.

Now its making the noise every time the clutch goes funky. I have videos to support it. Hopefully it happens tomorrow as I have an appt. with Subaru..

I want to have them install this http://www.subaruwrxparts.com/shop/p...idproduct=2255 when they rip the trany open as this should fix it for good, but you know how the techs can be..

that actually looks like a valid fix.

Wow that Snout Repair kit sounds like the proper explanation for everything that's been going on (i.e. from the early explanations of a lack of grease at the clutch fork to the grinding sensation felt in the pedal). That SHOULD be a factory recall fix, IMO. The worst part is that this has apparently been an issue since 2005! I guess that also explains why my 2004 WRX (my last car) had no similar clutch issues what-so-ever since it was a better design.

I'm saving that link as a bookmark and I'm going to see about having that installed myself the next time I'm over there. It's something the dealerships should be made aware of since most obviously don't have a clue.

I took the TSK3 Snout Kit information to my local Subaru dealer and they claim that it does not apply to the 2011 WRX (i.e. they won't install it). So much for a fix (frankly I think they're wrong).

I am in the club! I've had noisy throw out bearing at cold start since the car was new. Now at 18k miles I have gritty clutch pedal.

I pumped the hell out of the clutch to see if it would fix but no luck. I might get some relief but then it comes right back.

I have an appointment with the dealership next week, but if the issue disappears I will cancel it. I have wasted my time there with multiple issues all resulting in "no problem found/normal operation".

I am now considering the long term prospect of owning my Subaru. Dealership will likely replace with same parts that are going to fail again.

This transmission really blows. The whole thing needs to be replaced with better parts. The cost and labor considered, I don't think I love it that much.

I think the TSK3 Snout kit will fix the problem. The trouble is that it's a 3rd party kit and Subaru doesn't apparently support it nor will they admit there's a massive defect in their transmission due to the lack of a retaining clip on the throw-out bearing (which starts digging into the end of the case after it pulls grease off the clutch forks (which in turn makes the clutch harder to push in; just compare a new car to one with 20k miles on it and you'll see it's very noticeable). So you either do the repair yourself or pay someone to do it for you or wait until the TOB and/or clutch fails and put it in at the same time as the new TOB and/or clutch.

I think I really cleaned off the lubricant in my system, my clutch isn't returning to normal.

Owell, I will just tell everyone it's a high performance modification that enhances driver feedback. Next I am going to cut a hole in the floor so I can really feel the road.

Hey guys, I've got a similar issue, but not after WOT or after a dig...

I get this weird clutch pedal feel, almost like friction against sandpaper, all throughout the clutch travel. It happens when RPMs are above idle, with the sensation increasing as revs do. If I'm driving in gear, say 5th, and let it into neutral, push in the clutch as if to shift but don't push the lever into 5th, there's no sandpaper feeling.

But when I blip the throttle as if to rev match but not get into gear, the feeling comes back as soon as I let off the clutch at the engagement point. It also happens as I get into gear at speed with appropriate rev matching. When in gear, as I push in the clutch to test out the feeling, it's there. No noise, whatsoever. No slipping, either.

I think this feeling happened soon after my 30k service, not too sure. Maybe I'm hypersensitive, but I never really noticed this sort of clutch feel before. I'm right around 36k so the warranty is about up. Thinking of dropping it off at the dealer and having them take a look.

Anyone feel the same thing?

Yup I've had a similar feeling in my clutch. Some days it's there and then it randomly will disappear without notice the next. I've got a 2012 with just over 22K, I seem to remember it showing up a bit last winter as well, but this year I feel like it has been more noticeable. Ive noticed that if it isn't present and I go WOT in 2nd it usually will show back up again as well. I'm considering taking it in for warranty but it sounds like that might just be a waste. Does anyone know if the TSK3 kit will fix the issue if it has already been showing up? If so I will likely go that route as I was just about to put a Q300 exhaust on and will probably be going stage 2 in 6 months or so.

Yeah, that sounds more or less like the same problem (i.e. no retaining clip on the throw-out bearing leading to grease coming off the clutch forks and premature wear on the quill. How bad the vibration is varies quite a lot. Mine has felt bad, normal, slightly bad, etc. all in the same day. It's settled into "slight" for a long time now, though. I think it's settled into a groove or something (maybe literally). The clutch is noticeably heavier than it was new as well, possibly indicating throw-out bearing wear and/or much of the grease being off the clutch forks.

mine's got about 71k now in its original form. started giving a little squeak on 1st gear takeoffs but i think it stops doing it after the car is warm. not sure. might be some glaze. still holds power and does not slip.

i havent felt that grit in a very long time.

Should I have the dealer look at it to possibly get it replaced under warranty?

Mine wouldn't even consider it. If it's not "broke" they won't fix it. I just wanted them to install the snout kit for free under warranty (I'd pay for the kit). Nope. You pay for labor too or do it yourself seemed to be their take. Now if the clutch completely blew (throw-out bearing exploded or something equally catastrophic), they might put it in while they're installing the new clutch, assuming they'd even cover that clutch under warranty being considered a wear item (many have gotten one free replacement).

+1, same here. My issue went away. 75k on my clutch. And by went away, I think Von is onto something by saying the clutch/bearing has settled and I've gotten used to the heavier feel.

I got a screeching noise today when the clutch was in-between all out and all-in in the slip zone. It went away after driving a few miles, but I think it's just more signs the throw-out bearing floats around onto places it shouldn't. My warranty is up later this month. Too bad I have to live paranoid about a defect they should have corrected years ago in their design.
