driving the EVO IX this time, WRX resting..EVO/WRX challenge !
I have to admit, EVO is much easier to drive on track. Needs less mods to be competitive. But not as fun as the WRX Love both ! but the WRX is heavily modded which made it super expensive to maintain.
Setup is: 2006 EVO IX MR 6spd 3180lbs w/o driver Tomei ARMS 7960 turbo Turboback exhaust stock airbox w/hks filter stock intercooler & piping stock injectors & fuel pump AEM EMS 315WHP @ 22psi HKS Hipermax Pro w/swift springs cusco sway bars Carbonetic single disc blade clutch 18x9 255/40/18 Toyo R1Rs Class points 8.00 -0.25 for hans but dont wear it My WRX would fit in the unlimited class in the challenge, we might bring it out for some testing. Not doing RTE anymore, the spirit is lost. We now have a new baby, and will keep it pure. This is the most competitive EVO/Subaru event on west coast. With 8.00 points, I'm sitting at the bottom of the mod class as expected. The other mod class cars already maxed out their 13 points allowed for mod class. I still have 5 to spend lol. The street class guys are having a blast They are all within 0.5 secs with 6.00 points. Having maxed out points, they are concentrating on driving skills and maintaining the cars well. I'm about 1-1.5 second faster than the street cars with my turbo upgrade which pushed me to mod class. Well, the points system is proving itself to be very fair. I will upgrade the intercooler most likely and run some R compound at Spring mountain to push the fast guys a bit I dont have the perfect line yet but getting there slowly but surely Hope we can see more Subarus doing this challenge with us. So far STi-man had been a big supporter and gave the EVOs hard time. On sunday, sd 05 sti showed up and ran some fast practice session times before his clutch fluid started cooking. Hope to see him more often..There were also some brave GC8s who wanted to run the time attack session, but I think one got dq'd for some unknown reason.. This is not about winning or losing, come out to play if you feel like it There were vipers, porsches. civics, mazdas, s2000s, mustangs, bmws out there having fun. You guys are missing out !

watching vid now.
what was the reasoning behind changing the turbo? edit: car seemed to be pushing a bit. what kind of rates are you running with the swifts? Last edited by bap2086; 04-14-2010 at 03:41 AM. |

this is the test solely comparing 22psi OEM turbo vs 22psi Tomei turbo on this EVO IX http://garagegtlinks.blogspot.com/20...ng-tuning.html we have 10/8kg springs on it, shocks are set at 6/42 We had -3/-1.5 camber with 1/16 toe. I think the understeer is a combination of my bent line and 1yr old used R1Rs... want to proceed slow with this setup, testing every bit of change. Next is R compound and intercooler upgrade.. |

I dont think R888s are grippy as they are supposed to be.. they are look alikes, and i guess feel alikes lol. not sure what to run yet..and i will take your recommendation for stiffer settings, i got a set of hks 14/12s but im driving the car to vegas i will just click it up a bit.. |

14k-12k are huge rates heh.
10-8 swift would most likely work pretty well with 255 r comps. ive been following the sierra evo since last year when they first made their debut. amazing car and an amazing team who is only going to keep improving. having a great racing driver in emp really helps as well. ive seen the 7760 on some cars here. its a nice turbo. seemed like the evo liked it vs the stocker. my only experience with the R888s were in an E36 m3 running 600lb springrates on ASTs. the car felt amazing but ive never driven them myself. |

I ran them once, didnt really have too much chance to bring them to temp after getting kicked out at laguna seca RTA back in 2007. I was too loud lol just like all the other cars out there we all got DQd I will consider the R888s but I really want to run some AO48s ! |

i read the A048s are awesome too. alot of porsche guys run the pilot sport cups as well. RA1's and hoosier R6 always seem popular as well. some guys had success on the nitto NT01s too. sooo many choices
yeah sierra is gonna have a huge budget, they are a pro race team. i love when you see teams who really push the envelope. not many teams have enough money or the know-how to really do it. its good for the sport. hopefully there is a rivalry with the japanese race teams and them. will be great for watching and maybe some crazy innovation. |

Odd spring combination. The think tanks on EvoM all swap the springs so the higher rates are in the rear.

My EVO VIII also has 8k/10k with Ohlins DFVs. But, there are so many factors to choose the spring rate. Such as how stiff your sway bar, how much size of the spacer, tire size, dumper setting, and a lot of things....

Yep I know they do.. These coilovers were tuned by a pro rally team over in Turkey who setup 16 EVO CUP cars. The tracks over there are nothing like buttonwillow, and the cars ran R compound and cage. We used softer springs along with softer dampening. We got it corner balanced as well, works good for me so far, this is the 2nd race i did with this IX. Also most EVOs dont run front sway bars, their ride heights are about 0.5" higher than mine too I like trial and error instead of searching on the net or taking it to well known suspension tuners...

Thank you Dont feel so bad about the 8, you still have another AWD turbo! The biggest challenge for me to get the WRX handle was sourcing out a spec C steering rack, now its feels like an EVO, sort of more fun for sure !

Sierra Sierra does more testing with their Evo and puts more miles on it than any other US based TA team. I would hardly call that landing where they are now in one huge step! The motor they ran at BW had been punished for 2 weeks of testing and the head gasket was replaced as a precautionary measure so they could feel more comfortable turning up the wick on a motor they had a lot of miles on. HKS rented the track prior to the BW event in 2007 and had been in the country for a while prior to the event (it was on HKS's booth at SEMA prior to BW) They tested at BW before and after SEMA to setup for track. Oops I was wrong, 99% BS. They do have Cosworth handle their power train but I hardly think that's important most teams don't have the facilities to bore, hone, balance etc their own hardware and at best only do the mundane assembly work themselves. ^ agreed on the part that sierra sierra has been testing the car for a very long time.
i was at autoclub speedway.. when they blew a head.. a cosworth head.. and in 2 hrs there was a brand new head on a truck that came in. Eric Hsu of cosworth is always out at the track when the car runs. off topic.. i still think japanese time attack cars have the advantage over the us ones.. hard to explain it.. but they always come over and basically take out the competition(with relatively less practice then the locals). will be interesting to see how the super lap battle in australia goes. took a couple years for us to take out the hks car.. which wasnt on slicks like the sierra sierra.. but im not taking anything away from the sierra sierra car.. its obviously and awesome car and setup.
