Strange noise when pushing brake?
I just recently noticed that sometimes when I am just starting to push the brake I hear a strange clunking noise. It almost sounds like my front right caliper is loose, and when I hit the brake it drops back into place. It also feels like when I hit the brakes hard it pulls to the left a little. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,

If it pulls to the left, then I would think that you have a defective caliper on one side. Either the left caliper is stuck, or the right caliper piston is not pushing the pads correctly.

I hear all types of clunking, during light braking, like during parking and stuff like that, I also have experienced the pulling to one side or the other, during hard braking on the highway. Its very very intermittent and Ive heard others on the club talk about the clunking. Ive come to consider it normal. Just added to the "oh ***** another annoying sound" list.

I have heard a similar noise coming from what sounds like the left front. I have not noticed any pulling to one side or another. I have had the dealer check it x2 and they have found nothing wrong with the brakes or suspension. The last time I was in to the dealer, they had just looked at another RS with a similar complaint. If someone has a solution, I would love to hear it too, though I expect this is just one of those annoying noises you have to live with.

For the love of God, PLEASE HAVE IT CHECKED OUT FAST!
I was using aftermarket brake pads, which were installed by my mechanic. These brakes always make annoying squeals, and I've had the car back at the mechanic at least 5 times to inspect the noisy brakes over the course of about a year. Every time they insisted that the brakes were fine. I even took it to the Subaru dealer once, and they also agreed that the brake pads were ok. A few months ago, I noticed a new clunking sound coming from the front left wheel well when braking to a stop. Now I knew there definitely had to be a problem. I decided to take the car back to the Subaru dealer, cuz I was losing faith in my regular mechanic. By the time I drove to the dealership in Pittsburgh in stop and go traffic, my speedometer suddenly stopped working!!! Now I really knew something was wrong. After keeping the car overnight, the dealership informed me that the aftermarket brakepads were installed incorrectly. Apparently, with Subarus, you are not supposed to use the mounting hardware included with aftermarket brake pads. You MUST use Subaru mounting hardware. The dealership mechanics said since the wrong hardware was used, the brake pads did not sit in the calipers correctly. The relatively new pads wore very unevenly, and allowed the calipers to contact the rotors, ripping them to shreds (and I only drove the car about 20 miles after I noticed the clunking sound). The rotors were extremely overheated, evident in the blue color. The extreme heat caused one of the speed sensors to fail, which made the speedometer malfunction. In the end, I had a $400 bill for new rotors, new brake pads, and some speed sensor. All of these problems were caused by using cheaper aftermarket brake pads. Now I will only use GENUINE Subaru brake parts, even though they are overpriced and don't last as long. Good luck! I hope your problems aren't as serious as mine were. |

My metal masters squeak, but I attribute that to being semi-metallic and me not using enough anti-squeal compound.
I used the subaru stock brake shims and everything as per Paul Eklund's advice and everything is fine so far. I am actually getting to like the squeak. It tells people that I am slowing down. Around here, the brake lights aren't always enough warning to soccer moms on the cell phone behind you. |
