Mishimoto Radiator and cap question...
Hope this is in the correct forum, I searched and couldnt find any specific info on this. I am planning on a Radiator upgrade soon. I was on the rallysport website and they state that the included cap for the mishimoto radiator should not be used on the radiator and instead used on the expansion tank, and then the expansion tank cap used on the radiator.
To me this makes no sense whatsoever since the radiator requires a 1.3bar cap and the expansion tank a 1.1 bar cap. What they are saying is to use the mishimoto cap on the expansion tank which would mean that the tank would get a 1.3bar cap and the radiator a 1.1 bar cap. From reading the cooling system FAQ this seems backwards and would cause the car to overheat. The highest pressure cap should be used on the radiator. Anyone have a mishi radiator and care to tell me how they did it? From all pictures I have seen and even the mishimoto install video they mention nothing about not using the included cap anywhere other than the radiator. Thanks

i have the mishi rad. the same instructions are on their website. i put the oem cap on the mishi rad, and the mishi cap on the expansion tank. its been fine for well over a year. its quite confusing yes. the pics show the cap on the mishi rad and it is also shipped with the cap on the mishi rad.
the mishi cap is of different design. it is a 2 way valve and will bleed pressure on both sides. at least that is what mishi says. sadly, my rad cap sticker has fallen off so i cant run out and check for you what KPA my rad cap is that im using on the mishi rad rally sport is giving you the wrong directions, or you are reading them wrong. here they are from the mishi website: "The provided Mishimoto radiator cap should replace the stock cap located on the expansion tank. The stock cap attached to the radiator should be installed on the Mishimoto Performance Aluminum Radiator. The Mishimoto radiator cap is a two way valve, while the stock radiator cap is a single valve. Due to the difference in construction, the Mishimoto cap cannot be used on the radiator. If the Mishimoto cap is fit on the radiator, overheating may occur." the oem expansion tank cap is not used at all. the oem rad cap from your original rad goes onto the alum mishi rad and the mishi cap goes onto the expansion tank. Yeah, keep the stock cap from the radiator on the new radiator. put the mishimoto cap either in the trash or on the upper tank.

gotcha, that makes sense. I was wracking my brain last night about this...lol. My OCD was killing me. This makes sense as then both caps would be 1.3 bar. Thanks guys

I have the mishimoto radiator in my wrx. I used the oem cap for the rad and for the expansion tank. I threw away the mishimoto one. I have been using this for two years and no issue. The coolant stays ice cold with water wetter and distilled water.

This is what I would do - increasing the system pressure without a need is just asking for leaks.
