Default Project Impreza ! Need some advice and tech.

I am seriously considering finding a '95+ Impreza L AWD 5 Spd and doing a little project car. I can get a '95 Impreza L AWD 5 spd with about 90k for 3g's through a dealer sale (my dad own's a dealership.) I have read through some threads and it seems like if you want a fast Impreza (low 14's or high 13's 1/4), you wanna go with a EJ20T, EJ22T motors.
1. Do you need EJ20/22T ECU or can you use the stock one in a 1.8 or 2.2?
2. Do you need to change your diff? or the Gear Ratio's?
3. Can you use the stock 5 spd tranny with a EJ20/22T?
4. Do you need the EJ20/22T motor mounts and engine harness for a swap?
5. What Coil-over's would you suggest for road? No offroad use.
6. Has anyone put the Erebuni WRX body kit on a older Impreza (95+)
Thank you

just a note, you can get low 14's / high 13's on a EJ25, stage I turbo. I know this cause I've done it in 2 different cars.

As for the other questions.... like most other things, I can't help....

What were the turbo setups on those cars? That's my goal for my 97 Legacy GT.

Our local tuner Forced Air Technologies (see links) has turboed the stock 2.2 very successfully. I have a 2.5RS they turboed and the 2.2 compares well. FAT uses the stock ECU, gearset etc. Give em a call and I'm sure they can give you more info. Good luck.

If you decide not to go for the Impreza I have a friend who's looking for one. Thanks!

If you go with an EJ20t you will need to get an ECU to control it. I know of a couple of people that use the Legacy turbo ECU on the EJ20t and have no problems. You can also get a Haltech or another standalone to run it. $1300 for the Haltech.

there are different ratios for the front and read diff's. All you need to do is make sure they are the same ratio's

You can use the stock tranny, but i might not last very long. If you have a 2.5 tranny you will be better off.

Motor mount are no problem, but you will need to get a legacy turbo crossmember.

All of this works for the legacy too!

The engines can be had for $1000 or less sometimes.
Plus and exhaust $900

I am in the process of a swap.

I just acuired a first gen EJ20 (legacy RS aus spec)

You will find, that many of the low priced engines have a lot wrong with them and are extreemly dirty.

I highly recomend getting an STI engine rather than just a plain base WRX engine.

With that said. A 280hp base model GC8 impreza will run mid 13z.

To simplify the ECU issue, I would definitly recommend a complete engine managment system. This gives you the chance to wire up your car the right way. Less of a headache (but it is still one).

look to spend no less than 5000 dollars on the initial setup.

Any body kit for the GC8 will fit all GC8s. I preferably would stick with a completely custom body kit, or one of non-US origin (eg. jun, zero sports, eifel, c-west, cusco)

Coil overs are a hard pic, and there are many companies out there that claim one thing, but do another. I recommend DMS golds, or Cusco-comp series.
for the price concience(and what you should really do) is drop a set of FHI ver.5 struts from your parts department, and get a good aftermarket coilover kit to compliment them.

let me just say you have it made since your dad has the hookup.

How about the transmission?
can you put a Type RA tranny in a L?
How much is labor (to install the motor and tranny) going to cost if you choose a shop to do the work?

Any EJ motor, will bolt to any EJ tranny. So yes it will. I would guess that someone would charge between $500-1000 for the install depending on what you ended up actually doing.

No not any ej motor.

many have a five bolt pattern and some have the 4 bolt. Don't know which years though.

What is the motor you have that has 5 bolts? I have some that have 6, but they still work because the 4 main bolts still line up and so do the pins.
The only thing that you might have to do is tap a hole to mount one of the starter bolts on the tranny.
