Hi everyone,

I just called my dealership to discuss the low MPG I am still getting with my Impreza Sport. Last weekend I drove on an extended freeway trip for the first time and while the MPG was better it was still low (about 32-33 for a 220 roundtrip on pretty flat roads, avg speed 60 mph). Better but still on the low end for a purely freeway trip. Overall though I am still looking at about 20.9 for my combined city / some highway driving (70/30) so not good at all.

When I spoke with the service guy at my dealership he told me that they are getting slammed with calls about the mpg on the 2012 Impreza. He said about 1-2 per day (which he indicated is a lot). He told me that he thinks there is an issue, even their sales guys who have the Imprezas are bringing this up (the comment was from the sales guys that the cars shifting patterns seems odd). The service guy even mentioned that there are Outbacks getting better MPG which shouldn't happen for a car that is 500 pounds more and has a bigger engine. He thinks it's an issue in the transmission and that Subaru might have to address this with a software update for the "TCM' (Transmission computer module?).

Anyway bottom line is he has an email into SOA (local rep) and asked me to call back in a week for an update.

I know some people are getting exactly the MPG that they should be getting so it may not impact all cars but clearly there seems to be a growing pool of data to suggest that something is wrong with some Imprezas.

I'll keep y'all posted
I have trouble believing Outbacks are getting better mpg than the Imprezas, mostly because the data on fuelly.com doesn't bear that anecdote out.

I do notice the Impreza is notably worse on gas mileage under certain conditions: cold city driving, cold starts, and stop and go traffic. The stop and go is a real mpg killer for this car. You probably experience a few of these conditions pretty often in Seattle (don't tell me you don't; I grew up in the region and am unfortunately too familiar with the subpar traffic flow). On long mellow highway commutes, it really excels, though, especially in nice warm weather.

It's sort of two different cars in that respect, it seems....It's actually reminiscent of my 2002 Subaru on mpgs around the city, and really only differs in its exceptional highway mpgs (my 2002 was mediocre on mileage all the time; this car is only mediocre on mileage sometimes).

The point the service guy was making about Outbacks is that he is seeing Outbacks get better mpg than some Imprezas he has seen and has been reported by customers with their Imprezas so far.

The Fuelly data certainly backs this up for my experience, the avg MPG for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Outbacks on Fuelly are all above my average of 22.8 mpg (21.6 for my normal daily driving.) Certainly the overall 2012 Impreza data on Fuelly does show a higher avg mpg compared to 2012 H4 Outbacks.

But, for all the 2012 H4 Outback Wagons on Fuelly the averge MPG for 43 cars in Fuelly is 24.7 mpg which is above the EPA combined estimate of 24 while for all 41 Hatchback H4 Imprezas the average MPG is 27.5 which is below the combined EPA estimate of 30 MPG. Not sure if that really means anything but it is interesting.

And yes, very familiar with Seattle traffic and I do live in the midst of it for sure so I am taking that into account - I don't expect to get the 30 MPG "combined" mileage for my daily driving but my drive is not 100% city and with conservative fuel concious driving I don't think expcting closer to 27 than 21 is unreasonable.

I agree the car seems to perform poorly in the conditions you described. Maybe my dealer will loan me an Outback loaner for a tank and I can do my normal drive and do an apples to apples comparison to EPA estimates - it's always possible my particular driving conditions dump me into the low end outliers for mpg in general!

Despite my complianing about the MPG I enjoy driving the car, it's a nice car to drive and I do enjoy not having a huge car in the city all the time now!

My dad's 2011 Outback is beating my 2012 Impreza right now. Same driving conditions & cold starts. He's not on fuelly to track it but I drive his car whenever I can get my hands on it & I've witnesses it myself. He did say right after 4500 miles he saw it jump up.

YUP! With the week of warmer temps I got up to a whopping 24. I'm pissed to say the least. If I fill up & hop right on the highway I can get up to 38mpg. But I live in the city & to get to the highway on my daily commute that short city cold jaunt kills my #s. My city drive isn't technically EPA city but this is bulls#!t. My dealer is really concerned & nearly ALL of their customers are as unhappy as I am. They're gonna run fuel consumption tests for all of us once we hit 5000 miles & present it to SOA. I'm hoping that this potential TCM update for the firmware of the transmission ends up happening if enough of us document this. Aside from the mileage I love my car but this is ridiculous

I filled up this morning, last tank averaged 30mpg calculate, with a yakima rack on the whole tank (with fairing). I'll take it off for this tank after work today (so 30 miles into the tank). Filled up at my usual station, half a mile from our house. On the remaining 13.4 miles of my commute the car read 35.4mpg (so likely around 33.5 calculated). That is with 40 degree temps this morning.

I'm hovering around 24mpg. I hope it improves soon. I'm jealous of those people on fuelly getting 30+mpg!

The '12 Outback loaner I had did every bit as well on mpg's as my '12 Impreza. Made me immediately saddened that the Impreza doesn't get the fb in 2.5 form with a six speed gearbox. I think real world mpg's would be virtually the same only we would have better torque and more hp.

??????????????????????
Maybe with a downhill, tailwind, instantaneous measure.
Don't think I have seen mid 40's from ANYONE under ANY conditions for any distance.

I can hit 40s on sections of FLAT road with no wind and steady speed. It is just everything else that kills me If we never had to warm up the car, accelerate, stop, or go up and down hills, the car would have great MPG

I am currently renting a 2012 Altima and I am getting similar results. You really need to be very easy in the gas or you will see a big drop. At least this car has an eco gauge, it helps me drive better. I started driving my STI the same way and I get an improvement with it. You basically have to drive like a granny!

I have to say it sure is the GD warm up of this car that kills it. Went out for lunch, hopped on the highway for about 2 miles and dropped from 35.4 to 32.1 (this is only 15 miles into the tank) - as soon as I was off the highway onto normal side streets it had no problem holding 31.8 despite multiple stops and a max speed of 30mph. Time re-write the firmware and shut the POS PZEV (at least at startup for a default of say 5 minutes) off for customers who live in a state that doesn't require it. Sure wish I had the patience to order one, wouldn't have bothered with the $300 (plus loss of MPG) expense that it is. It couldn't be the more clear problem to me, and I'm not really unhappy with my mpgs - I just know it could be better if the car ran differently, and feel like it could actually be fixed with a firmware flash.

The only thing weird about driving like a granny is that you are doing it consciously - people will speed around you cussing as if you're an idiot, then they brake in front of you and I'll get pissed at them for wrecking my economy, hahaha. Try timing your red lights so you don't come to a full stop - people think you're bats*%t crazy then.

On flat ground my impreza will do 40' s at cruising speed easily. Hell at certain speed on flat ground I can hold different readouts as high as the 60's+ . I dont granny it but I've gotten used to adapting my driving methods slightly and my car has alwaya far exceeded my initial expectations for fuel economy. I have done a few minor things differently than most folks in terms of breaking it all in. But I'm not saying that had any affect... Just saying that I've been frustrated with maby aspects of this car but the fuel economy is great on mine. I do feel like the 2.0 fb isn't a stellar engine in the form the impreza gets. I'm not knocking it, I feel its going to be dependable. I just really think they could have either tuned the 2.0 better
or maybe tuned the 2.5 slightly differently and just put that in the impreza.

are there companies that do custom tuning for subaru's? there has to be, i could get my Buick regal custom tuned, so perhaps something after market if subaru can't

Yeah a lot of time both my Subarus lie on the trip computer. I don't know why the couldn't adopt a system like on my wife's CR-V. It is usually accurate to the tenth of a MPG.

Yep anything in the neighborhood of 45-65 will almost definitely be above 30 unless uphill or accelerating, and usually into the 40s or 50s.

Case in point: I left the house with 65 miles on the current tank, and ODO reading 29.1mpg. It initially dipped below that to 28.5mpg. I drove 65 miles today, with strong winds (upto 20 miles plus - yes some at the back of the car, but I returned home when winds were even stronger into the wind). Pulled into the garage with the ODO reading 33.9mpg. Since I doubled the current trip distance (65-130 approx) and added about 5mpg to the average mpg, that means that for this 2nd part of the current 130 trip I actually averaged approx. 39mpg. I'll even plot the trip for perusal on google maps if anyone is interested.

Just got back from driving ~1200 miles this weekend. I managed to hit 34.9 MPG on a tank with mostly sustained highway driving at speeds between 60 and 70 MPH. Almost no stops or brake use, air temps between 50 and 60F. The tank before that only got me 32.6 MPG, though I started driving on that tank when the temp was 30F and it warmed up to 50F throughout the day as I was driving. I am making another trip this weekend, temps should be up and possibly I can hit 36 MPG.

Also I have an old tank on Fuelly with a 35.3 MPG avg on it. I don't trust that too much, since the tank before that, my car was parked on an incline and when I was pumping gas, a bunch of fuel ended up all over my feet. The tank was overfull so it would have screwed up my MPG reading for the next measurement

I averaged 33mpg after a couple hours of driving this past weekend - nothing too hilly. It's the best mileage i've gotten so far after three and a half months.

hopefully there is something they can do, seems almost impossible to reach the advertised mpg.
