I will admit I laughed when I saw that foam picture.

Why are you certain that they didn't open up the tranny? Just because they put foam in the console doesn't mean they didn't do the work they said. You should have gotten a invoice describing the work. Since it was warranty, SOA needs record of the work as they're the one paying the dealer for the work. Your car and all work performed by Subaru should also be listed on the "mysubaru" site.

I never said they didn't perform the work. I only stated that after they put everything back together, they heard the same noise. So instead of just telling me that it was normal, they covered it up. The work is not on the website.

Makes me want to add some of that insulation under my shifter, looks like acoustic foam. My 11 transmission (7k) has whine in 1st and 2nd also, I remember reading somewhere about those gears being slightly less helical. Maybe they haven't had any complaints they had to deal with about the noise that made it as far as warranty so after replacement they were puzzled and were just trying to help by adding the insulation. Sucks they didn't tell you they added the stuff but humans will be human. Now that you've heard of so many with the same characteristics maybe you could go speak with the service manager in private to see if they are now aware of the mesh sound being common/normal. Maybe they can learn something from this issue... or maybe they'll keep claiming warranty. I wouldn't think they like doing transmission warranty work though, if it pays anything like our warranty work does.

Could you explain this point further? why wouldn't they want to perform warranty work for transmission?

Do they get paid less than if the customer was paying for it?

Some warranty work takes a lot longer than what we get paid for. Most customer pay is about what it takes to do so we don't lose our ass. A lot of times warranty doesn't pay for diagnosis either so the time spent finding the issue can be time/money lost. We can log in when doing the diagnosis on random issues like electrical glitches or issues with new vehicles, but that doesn't always mean we get reimbursed for the time.

For example, we had a water pump issue with some of the fwd v6 engines and it is very close to the fender well which makes it a total pita. The manufacturer used to pay about 12 hours because to "properly" remove the pump they required us to drop the entire front subframe with engine and transmission to access it. Well some of us (I was the first one at my shop) found a way to get the pump out without damaging anything, just by moving some parts out of the way and also avoiding removing the engine assembly. Score, we could do the job in about 2.5-3 hours depending on the tech, and flag 12 hours! Well instead of rewarding the techs for finding an unconventional method, the company dropped the warranty pay time down to 2.5 hours. Basically, the manufacturer seems to find the fastest logged times for jobs and use those for warranty flag times. There are a few jobs that pay .6hrs for example and actually take 20-25 mins (including paperwork and running back and forth and waiting on the parts dept) but many pay less than what the average good tech takes to get the job done. If I write up a water pump that takes me two hours for two, I get paid two. Extended warranty also sucks, you write the time you need and sometimes they knock it down 50-60%. :/ Techs don't have any say in the matter. They even refuse to give us two gallons of non-diluteable coolant when we do water pumps on large trucks... they only allow one. I'm not saying we deserve 3 hours for doing a 2 hour job but when the average quick tech gets it done in 2 it shouldn't pay 1.2-1.5 hours.
