Cool Test Drove the 2.5i Legacy at SoD

I went in for an oil change this afternoon, and Heist took me out for a spin in the 05 Legacy. It was an automatic 2.5i non limited edition sedan.

The ride was very impressive. Kevin first spun me through his patented STi testdrive loop through the backroads of Dallas. After that, I took it for a spin.

The first impression - it looks like a clean Subaru on the outside. Once you step inside the vehicle, I almost sound myself looking for the Subaru logo to make sure you were in the right car. This is the base Legacy, but there is nothing base feeling about it. The center console is classy, and not really the same "fake silver" look and feel of my 02 WRX. Instrumentation looked very classy, the interior as a whole felt more like and IS300.

The car handles very well. It will get up and go, but naturally isn't a WRX, STi or XT. But, I really like handling and braking. Both of which it did remarkably well.

Compared to the 04 XS my wife currently drives, there is less body roll. The braking comes on very quickly, which took some adjustment.

The 2.5i model has the 4 speed auto with sport mode and "manual" shift mode. The transmission shifts quickly and smoothly, and I really loved the sport mode.

There has been a lot of buzz on the boards for months questioning Subaru's plan on moving upmarket. If the Legacy 2.5i is any indicator of what direction Subaru is heading, I applaud their efforts and would not take a glance back.

Kevin, I haven't been on a test drive with you since my first month, maybe we need to go again, and get me back on the right track.

I can't see how it would be anything like the STi drive. My wife still talks about it. I think that's a good thing, but I'm really not sure. I don't think she was expecting to have to use the oh **** handle quite that much, and she told me never to drive like that in that car on city streets if we end up getting one.

Thanks again Kevin, BTW. Like I said at the time, we'll probably be down there again this summer to visit family and car shop. Hopefully you'll have a Leg GT on the floor...

While I can't say I used the oh **** handle in the 2.5i test drive, it was still the most spirited test drive I've gone on with a sales person.

At some point, I'd live to have a comparison with Heist's STi drive, but the 2.5i spin was well worth it.

In the end, the 05 Legacy platform is a beautiful machine.
