Default 3.0 H6 into 95 Impreza: Phase Two, Wiring

Well, mechancally, the engine is in. Now I'm messing with the wiring harness.

Working with a stock H6 computer and H6 wiring harness, pulling it all apart, labeling everything, and then figuring out what I need and what I don't.

Now, here's an interesting thought. The computer is (obviously) available in a "connected to an automatic transmission" model only. Some of the signals to/from the engine are "AT load" and whatnot. I wonder what sort of effect or influence these signals have...

Well, found that one of the connectors to a lot of grounds is completely gone... So I have some fabbing of harness to do. Perhaps I'll build the exhaust while waiting for the connectors to arrive...

That's very cool.

Is there going to be enough room for the radiator? The engine looks very far forward. Also, what did you do about the transmission?

Default ECU Reflash?

I put an automatic ECU into a manual car and it knew that the current car was manual. But I looked to see out of curiousity what signal values were changed by it now knowing it was a manual. One of the key ones was the value for netural from the transmition was reversed. Meaning it was something like Manual neutral the pin on the ecu for the signal recieved 5v but automatic neuteral it received 0v. Just something you will probably want to look into. There were a few others such as EGR system but your engine doesn't have that anyways. I know an ECU reflash was discussed. I wonder how many of these things an ECU reflash would be able to address.

1) Yes
2) Ehh, it's about the same
3) Bolted it on. See the H6 Conversion Page it has plenty of pics.

Default VROOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woohooooo! The engine is running! It's been about two weeks of futzing and fiddling, but the engine has started! Eric Adams is here, and we were going through the wiring diagrams again, measuring signals, and tracing. Then we came across one wire that I hadn't marked, and it turned out to be important. Touched it straight to the battery positive, hit the manual crank button, and voila!

The first time was a little rough, as the battery voltage was low. Hooked an Optima battery in parallel and vrooooOM! it started right up! Now begins the next step of actually routing all these wires and mounting everything. Then putting in the radiator and cooling system, and figuring out how to adapt the belted accessories from a 1.8 to the 3.0, and so on. Lots of work yet before I can even drive it around the block.

No pictures or video yet... I'll get that up at some point.

My question is probably a while off, but what do you think this engine is going to do to the handling characteristics of the car? The H6 is obviously a lot heavier than your EJ18, and I *think* there is still a significant weight difference between the EJ25 that has actually been in a GC8 chasis and the EZ30 which hasn't yet been in that chasis. Any ideas?

Great project! I can't wait to see more on it.

Default been adressed before

Past threads have mentioned that things like light wieght bumper beam, a carbonfiber or aluminum hood and moving the battery to the rear or replacing it with a lightweight quickly help accomidated the weight bias.

Will you be offering your services to the general public on doing this swap? What I mean is, say I took an Impreza to your shop and ask if you can do what you did to your Impreza (swap in an EZ30 engine). Would you do the swap? If so, what would be the costs (engine, other parts, labor?)

I just feel you can make a lot of $$$ off of this and have quite a few happy customers. Yeah, I'm getting ahead of myself because it's not complete just yet but you are mighty close. Also, North Carolina isn't terribly far from me. 7-8hr drive or so. Just leaving some options open.

Kevin, whoa whoa whoa! First of all, here's a picture of my "shop".

I have a 9-5 job that is not automotive related, it's electrical engineering.

Quote:
Would you do the swap?
No, sorry dude. After the rally car is "done" (which really means 'done enough to race again') I have a 1971 MGB that I'm restoring. Then I have to take the engine out of my 1994 twin turbo RX-7 and get that monster rolling again. Plus the trailer needs some new ramps welded up. And I have some stuff to do to the tow van...

Quote:

The costs would be, uh, large. I would imagine the end result would be comparable to other engine swaps. (wxr, jdm, etc...) That's if you had someone _else_ do it. To make it something I would want to do, taking time away from my other projects, the price would be ridiculous.

The biggest thing is that for my application, race car, I'm working with a different set of parameters. For instance, my dash is already _gone_. All the wiring is easy to get to. I don't care much if I have to toss the AC... or the heat. To have _everything_ working like it would in a production car... ugh. I wouldn't want the responsiblity.

And my girlfriend would kill me if I was working on someone elses car instead of fixing the lawnmower.

Cheers,
Anders

Sorry Anders! I had no idea. Also, I didn't know you where an electrical engineer. Phase two should be a piece of cake for you then.

And you won't be needing that 'nose heavy' Impreza after you complete it and race it a couple of times. *cough, cough*

Hmmm, yes and no. Even with a complete wiring diagram, that isn't really a complete spec of the system. For example (one of many) the computer has a "Torque cut signal". I ASSUME it's a signal that goes TO the auto transmission. But it _could_ be a signal FROM the transmission to the engine. Who knows? There's about a dozen of those "mystery" connections.

Quote:

Yeah right!

Last night I took out the ABS mechanicals, there's 11 pounds from the front corner. I've already welded in the holder to put an Optima battery in the trunk, that moves another 36 pounds out of the engine bay. The lightweight bumper beam will loose another, what, 20? And then an aluminum hood drops about 20 from the front. So that's about 87 pounds. Won't really know till I get it back on the scales...

Anyway, now that I can start the engine and it runs, I'm working on getting lots of other stuff done so that I can actually _drive_ it....

---BELTS & COOLING---
Return belt to CarQuest
Pick up belt at Advance
Torque tranny bolts
Find engine belt
Install engine belt
Install fan onto radiator
Drop in radiator/fan, final clearance check with engine belt in place
Connect upper & lower radiator hoses
Connect hoses to passenger compartment
Return belt to AutoZone

---MANIFOLD---
fashion some kind of intake filter
Remove intake manifold
Remove existing intake manifold gaskets and clean mating surfaces
Install new intake manifold gaskets
Torque intake manifold

---BRAKES---
Investigate rear bias adjuster
Bleed brake system
Install rear splitter
Find 2 brake line splitters
Bend lines and install front splitter

---WIRING---
stock computer -remove for wiring access
air routing box -remove for wiring access
gauges -remove for wiring access
remove stock computer
pull stock computer harness through firewall
figure out how to connect computer to master relay
conenct tach output
codrivers foot rest -remove for wiring access

Isnt the lightweight front bumper beam more like a 40-50lbs weight loss? Have you actually done it yet?

Nope, haven't done it yet. Busy with other stuff... I'd bet there's info on it somewhere on this board.

Well thats why I was curious why you said so little, cause from the few people who have done it, its a huge weight difference... (the lw bumper beam weighs close to nothing while the stock beam is extremely hard to lift with one person)

Don't know about the GC8 but on the bugeye the front bumper beam is at most 40lbs. So its more like a 30lb loss.

which is still a hell of alot.

Question

Since you're on the topic of weight. Do you have any sense of how much heavier that engine is than the old one? Now, I think I remember reading you had a 1.8L, so I'm sure it is a good bit heavier. I'm really more curious in gauging it against a 2.5L. Many people have the impression that the 3.0 is a lot heavier than the 3.0 too, but I have read other reviews that say it's only a shade heavier. So, can you shed any light, or even real numbers, onto that subject.

I have guesses, but talking about them is as much use as pissing in the ocean. I had the car on racing scales before the conversion, and it will go on afterward as well. Then we'll all know.
