'12 Impreza Cold Air Intake
Just purchased a 2012 Impreza 2.0i premium sedan with CVT. Any suggestions on a cold air intake? Will this void a warranty? Any tuning involved?

I doubt there is anything for that car yet. It's brand new and it would definitely void your warranty if you got it tuned. Best bet is to check if Subaru has anything for through SPT, or wait for the BRZ to come out because that has the same motor and there should be upgrades for that. Also CVT's arent great for performance so you would be limited as to how much power you can put through them.
Just lettin you know! |

It's GOT a cold air intake. Have you opened the hood? If you're worried about maximum airflow, change the filter out every 6 months.
You aren't going to improve airflow thru the stock manifold by putting some third-party junk on the car... |

I bought a K&N Apollo Universal Closed Intake Systems for cheap so even if I'm not satisfied with it, its not a big loss. I'm still waiting for it in the mail though. Other than the Spectre 260D - Spectre Universal Cold Air Intake System should fit too since its universal; however, both of those systems would most likely require some modification.

the 2.0 is NA so there is no tuning involved. like the others said, change the filter often for max air flow. but theres really no harm (other than possible mpg loss) in putting an aftermarket filter like k n n or if someone makes a CAI.

I used a k&n on my Talon. It let LOTS of road grit thru, which stuck to the intake plenum. I advise people to avoid oiled cotton filters... |

I thought it would be along the lines of the MAF sensor getting coated in oil due to people putting too much oil on their filters.

Has anyone taken a close look at the stock intake? There's a plastic bracket that supports the grille but also blocks direct air flow into the air box. I pulled it out, but the grille isn't well supported without it. Any benefit to modifying that piece to allow airflow directly into the intake duct?

Right. Forgot about the oiled ones. I used a dry avo panel filter on my 05 LGT without any probs for 5 years but on my 02 sentra se-r im pretty sure it was an oiled aem cai and was bad on maf after a year.

These cars make 148hp... What do you think you're going to gain?

I want to get an exhaust for my new Impreza... but don't expect to gain anything from it but a nicer sound and no, I don't think it will become a race car because of it. It doesn't mean you can't do it if you want.

Maybe he likes the sound that comes with an intake? Check this thread out, if you want to do something with your exhaust/muffler.

I pretty much agree with everything everyone else said. I wouldn't expect any real power gain. If you are going for sound, I would remove the box where the filter sits in and throw on a cone shaped K&N filter on the end. That will give you the sound and maybe one or two hp. I am not sure if that will void your warranty, maybe not.

Yeah and you can get it for like $35 on Amazon. Make sure you put the K&N sticker on the filter so they don't throw it out when you bring your car in for maintenance and don't over oil the filter its going to kill your MAF.

Having run k&n's on bikes and cars, I can vouch for the above comment that they definitely dont filter as well. The oem setup is as "cold air" as its goimg to need. Other than tje flimsy grille attatchment has anyone noticed stress cracking marks in the end of the rubber intake tube on the engine side?

Lots of folks swear by them. But I've had to clean several maf's on friend's cars running k&n's. For what the car is and how its tuned, a filter swap is not going to get you any real gains. Nor will an intake system swap. Just my opinions. Others will disagree strongly.
