Do you know specifically which part and where on the air intake?? This noise doesn't seem to sound plastic but more metal but if you're right than I'll be happy if its an easy fix.

I'm pretty sure there's a TSB or something because the tech recognized the noise immediately and said there was a fix for it since the 09 models.

Anyways, it's not mechanical or anything.
In fact, to follow-up, the dealer I went to said it was the "air scope" or "scrope" (according to the write-up) and they fixed it for free, and out of warranty (WAY out).

But it's not the "air scope" rattling. Yeah, I think the high pitched end of the rattling sound is gone, maybe, but the low metal sounding rattle was still present.

Which, I have to say, really pisses me off because the service tech on the phone said it was probably a heat shield, and I told them it was probably a heat shield, and I wanted to pay to get a heat shield fixed, and they said it wasn't the heat shield.

So either it's a heat shield, or Subaru's sound like **** normally.

I don't have time to go back for an extra trip, so I will take it up with them again for the next scheduled visit.

God damnit.

Yeah I have a feeling its almost definitely a heatshield as well.

The air intake duct is what causes this vibration about 99% of the time. You will notice it when at low rpm and a slight to heavy load on the engine. Also it gives the illusion of coming from the passenger side dash/a-pillar. At my dealership we have replaced and insulated the duct on just about every impreza we service.

Can you be more specific as to the location? Where on the Air Intake? And do you have any DIY fixes for us?

Definitately not the same. My sound always and only comes when at about 3k rpm, usually between 3 and 4th gear when accelerating, and it comes from the direction of down under the car, toward the front, to my right (Driver seat is to the left so that is unavoidable). It is a deep, almost metallic clanging/rattling sound.

And besides, they did the above fix and the first time I drove away from the dealer the noise I'm talking about was still there.

I just got the car back from the service department earlier today and they diagnosed it as a loose grille...I specifically told them it was a heat shield but they diagnosed it otherwise. They stated they removed and then reinstalled the grille. I even told them it happened while I had the stock 2.5i grille before installed the OEM Sport grille.

The weird thing is, I've driven roughly 5 miles since I got it back and so far the sound is gone.

Weird. Now I have to find those sport grill install threads to find the points to tighten myself. Thanks for the update.

It is weird...When I installed the grille I 100% made sure everything was on and tight.

BTW still no rattle/rumble

Problem: rattle from front right engine compartment when the engine is bogged down between 3rd and 4th gear.

Solution: Approx 1" thick foam strip sliced from a gardening kneeling pad and jammed into air vent junction.

Problem solved, no more rattle.

This sounds like the noise I have. A loud buzz/ hum at around 1800rpm, that sounds like its coming from the front near the a pillar. I Brought it to the dealer and they said it was heat shielding which did not fix the problem. What should I ask for when I bring it down in terms of this clip/which part of air intake is buzzing? Will the clip be enough or does it need to be replaced as mentioned in another post.

I have the same problem on my 09. I brought it to the dealer twice with no fix. I'm gonna try the foam by the intake to see if that works

I rolled up some carpet foam and it fixed the problem. Does anyone know the part number for the clip?

i also have this issue here in canada with my 09 2.5i sedan. there is a rumble at 1500rpm. it doesnt bother me cause of im rarely cruising at that engine speed. i think its normal for these cars. a rental 2011 i was driving had same issue. i personally think that its pulsating exhaust gases in the headers. also when i turn off my car there is lots of knocking and rattling noise from the cat/exhaust, it's definately sound of hot air in the pipes. again normal but some manufacturers have managed to muffle these stuff.

what bothers me is sound of air rushing probably due to poor intake design on partial throttle.
