'98 impreza outback wagon body kit
Hello,
My sons 16th Bday is coming in Dec and I grabbed him a 1998 Impreza outback sport wagon for his birthday. I have been looking for body kits and can only seem to find kits for the coupes and sedans. Does anyone know where I could find a kit for a wagon? I understand that the frontend is the same but is the rear bumper the same on the wagons and coupes? Is the wheel base the same on the wagon as it is on the sedan? Also, what bolt pattern interchanges with the subies if any? Thanks for the help!

The bumpers and the wheel base are the same from a wagon, sedan and coupe. I'm not sure how much you are wanting to spend on a body kit, but most of the cheap ones like you see advertised in magazines and on EBay fit terribly. You will likely pay more in body work to have it made fit correctly than you paid for it.
There are lots of great looking OEM parts that can totally change the look of the car and will fit correctly. There are a couple front bumpers to chose from, that came on STi's in Japan and are available in the US either at dealerships or used. First the Japanese V5/V6 WRX and STi which is also front bumper found on US Impreza RS's 99-01. This one is sometimes common in salvage yards. They show up in the classifiedes here and on www.rs25.com fairly regularly. If you get it used try to get it complete with fogs and turn signals, since the turn signals are different. However, you can get the turn signals on EBay for fairly cheap. With fog lights it looks like this.... These are the Japanese STi fog light covers that fit in this bumper in place of the fogs. Replicas of these are also available on EBay for fairly cheap.... This front bumper is my personal favorite. It is the V1-V4 Japanese market only WRX and STi bumper. I had one on my old 95 Coupe. It is available from the dealership here, but they don't have any way to look it up. You need to know the part number. The number is 57720FA071. There are fog covers available for these as well but are hard to find in the US. I just got a set of Hella 500 fog lights for mine. The problem with this bumper is finding the turn signals. I got mine on www.rs25.com from someone in the classified section. You can get them on www.ebay.co.uk from Great Britain but they run about $60. The bumpers are also on EBay from time to time. The seller that has them most often is JHOT... As for the side skirts. The 98-01 US RS's came with the same ones that were on WRX's and STi's in Japan. You can find them at salvage yards or the classifieds on here and rs25 fairly regularly. They are fairly expensive from the dealer. They look like this.... The things behind the wheel wells front and rear that hang down are called aero guards. They don't come with the side skirts usually. The strips on the bottom of the back bumper are called rear spats. They are random STi/WRX accessories in Japan. You can sometimes find them in the US. The spats are available at www.subarugenuineparts.com for a good price new. The tail lights on that car are the Japanese market WRX/STi tail lights. You can get them on that site as well or on EBay. The wagon taillights are different and seem to be much cheaper. They run about $170 used on EBay. As for you question about about the bolt pattern, I am assuming you are talking about the wheel bolt pattern. It is 5x100mm. You can use any factory Subaru wheel that shares this same bolt pattern, including 04 STi's, WRX's, RS's, Legacys, and Foresters. Be careful buying wheels off of other cars. There are many cars that share this pattern but the width and offset are very important. Subarus are notorious for having bad wheel bearings, that is about there only reliability problem. A wheel that is not meant for the car will make this problem much worse. The same goes with aftermarket wheels. Be very careful buying aftermarket wheels that are not specifically designed for Subarus. For good quality inexpensive wheels you might want to look into Rota wheels. Probably the best place to get them is at www.subydude.com. Good luck Ryan |
