Talking 4EAT engine removal... Give me some tips..

I have pulled blocks off of auto trannys before (it has been a while ), but this will be my first encounter with a 4EAT. Searching was in-conclusive, and the FSM is vague as far as block from transmission removal.

I assume...

-Remove starter to access flywheel?
-Spin until I reach TQC bolts? (How many?)
-Lift off of mounts and pull apart?

Any hints/tips to make this go quickly and smoothly? Easier than a manual trans?

TIA,
Matt

Drain tranny.

Unbolt starter and associated wires.

Unhook plugs.

Unbolt dogbone.

Hook up engine to something to pull it up slightly (no pressure, just tension).

Unbolt transmission mount from under the car.

Hook up tranny jack. You will have to pull up on the front side of the engine a bit to get a good angle.

Unbolt tranny from back of engine.

Pull, curse, use big screwdrivers to split the transmission/engine apart.

It will piss fluid everywhere, even after draining. Hope you have lots of speedy-dry.

Cool

If you are just trying to remove the engine (and not the tranny) proceed as follows;

1. Remove access plug under and to the left of the throttle body.

2. Remove four 12mm head bolts that attach the flex plate to the torque converter.

3. Drain engine of all fluids. (this one can be done at any time)

4. Remove engine mount bolts on X-member.

5. Unbolt starter.

6. Unbolt/ unnut engine from transmission (the lower 2 connections are studs with nuts on them).

7. Remove radiator, fans, coolant tank, and battery.

8. Unbolt A/C compressor and power steering pump from engine.

9. Hook up engine hoist to engine (A/C compressor bracket and lifting bracket near the access plug).

10. Disconnect all wiring, and remove the intake if you haven't already.

11. Unbolt dogbone.

12. Pull PS pump off to the passenger side of the engine bay, and AC compressor to drivers side (if you flip it upside down while moving it over you won't have to disconnect it).

13. Lift engine up approximately 2 inches, support transmission with a jack.

14. Use screwdrivers, pry bars, hammers, whatever is necessary to remove the engine from the transmission.

15. Once separated, lift the engine out and you are finished.

Sorry if there is too much detail, I only want to write that once.

If you don't unbolt the flex plate from the torque converter it will leak everywhere, and it's a pain to get the damn thing back on.

Are there any pictures of this process? I am in the middle of pulling an engine from a 4eat WRX and the engine and trans are stuck together solid. It seems like there has to be something else mating the two together. I've separated engines from automatic transmissions before, but they've never been this stubborn.

These have dowl pins on the trans/motor, could be hanging you up.. You have to get something between the engine and trans and start wedging them apart...

my motor actually has sawzall marks on it from one of th dowls being CUT before I owned the car..

Start with a thin flathead and work your way up
