Question Cant Decide Between APS 3.0'' Or 3.5'' Exhaust

Hello All,

I am having some work done on my new ride in a few weeks. I am trying to decide on the APS 3.0'' turbo back exhaust or the louder meaner 3.5'' system. I like how the 3.5'' sounds and looks, but have a fairly long drive to and from work each day which consists of alot of freeway driving. I would like to hear some thoughts on the 2 systems, plus's and minus's.

I have the 3.5 and it is really not that bad. It is really loud at WOT, but other than that it is ok. I drove ~500 mi a couple weeks ago in a day and did not think anything bad about it. I actually like the way it sounds, especially at WOT. Some people say it is too loud, and it does attract a lot of attention. It comes with a silencer, but I have never used it, so I could not tell you what it is like.

The general rule that I have gathered is, if you are going to go to a bigger turbo, you might as well save the hassle of upgrading the exhaust and just buy the 3.5 now. On the other hand, if you are not going bigger, sticking with the 3 will be more civil (but not quiet) and not significantly less powerful, especially if you ditch the cat.

I got the 3 because I don't want much more power (and for that reason won't upgrade turbo) as I am trying to focus on the handling and my driving skills before power. The 3 makes good power and good noise at all rpm. When you get on it, it howls but its is quiet enough where you don't set off car alarms in parking lots and wont wake people up in the next county. With that said, the badass factor of the 3.5 is very hard to ignore as it is sort of an "all out" exhaust. I’m sure you would never have that "hmm maybe I should've gone bigger" feeling with the 3.5. But I have to say I do not regret my decision to get the 3. It is way louder than I expected so I have almost never found myself wanting more noise. Rich at Dyno Comp (who I suspect will be tuning your car) made a good deal of power for my mods and the torque curve is very flat. And I have yet to see whether or not a 3.5 would equate to more power than a 3 on the stock turbo. I suspect it would make more up top but spool might be slower because of less pressure (don’t take my word for it though because I am quite new to this stuff).

Other than that you should probably try to hear both the exhaust systems before you buy one of them if you are really having trouble deciding. If you want to hear my catless 3 I would be glad to show it to you provided that you're not way over on the other side of town.

I have a 3 inch system and its great,
I got a B&B downpipe and mated it to the Magnaflow Ti catback. With the cats gone and a resinator in the Catback its tame around town and down the freeway. But If I get it going it will sing. Parking lots no alarms unless I try. In town no tickets unless I try.

3inch I think would be just fine. 3.5 and you need to worry about fitment problems and speedbumps. And if you coilover your car. Forget it. Its bound to hit something.

So does the 3.5 make a power difference or not? I have a 55lb turbo getting a stage 3 axis block and cams sometime in april. Do you think the 3 inch is enough or will I get a few hp's from the 3.5? Currently I have the invidia ti which is no longer in production.
