blocking off egr; good idea or not?
i dont think that jdm subarus have an egr system so for most of you guys this wouldnt be an issue. but what if youre swapping in an usdm engine, or building a
hybrid? i know that blocking off the egr rasises combustion temps but can that be corrected with just a colder plug? i'm sure that you would show a CEl but who cares if it doesnt hurt anything. the only things that you would have to worry about is the egr valve itself and the egr postion sensor right? you could just plug the vaccum lines up. i'm just thinking that getting rid of the egr and maybe even the evap systems you could really clean up and simplify an engine

I tore all that crap out when I swapped from my ej18 to my ej22. I used the EJ18 manifold and just built a block off plate and tore of all the hoses and plugged the vacuum ports. No cels yet and its been months and it runs great!

i would think that as long as you kept it in check the higher temps would even be better for turbo spool

your retarded if you remove EGR...
only thing egr does is improve gas mileage during light throttle/cruising conditions... it is NEVER open during idle or full throttle.... Bottem line DO NOT REMOVE EGR... |

hows does dumping exhausr gas into the intake improve gas milleage? the point of the egr is to a) reduce emissions by re-burning some of the exhuasr gases and b) reduce combustion temps. i dont know what youre talking about but i dont think that its right (i could be wrong)

how would letting exhaust gas into the combustion chamber LOWER temps?
i thought it was a way for cold starts for the engine to warm up faster as well. the EGR probably does help mileage, since your reburning unused fuel in the exhaust. dont worry about it, do whatever makes the swap easier for you. |

i guess that i just want to understand it. i know that the symptoms of a bad egr is pinging and rough idle, i dont know

egr is nasty. and so is a RWD "drift-o-futo" impreza.
you'd think that if EGR improved gas milage all the JDM motors would have them..... |

you can block off EGR and not have any driveability problems. You may get a CEL and you'll have problems passing emisions (if it's in your state)
I know for a fact (because there's one in my garage) that when doing a miata swap you have to disable the EGR on the new motor. Just block it off w/ a plate and call it good. EGR is old technology, there are better systems coming out and currently in use |

i have mine blocked due to the rumor that N/A to turbo swaps, you'll be getting a LOT of hot gas going into your intake manifold, thus heating up a specific piston chamber due to area of disposal. I have yet to absorb why I SHOULDN'T do this, so its still disconnected. My concern is to make all four intake manifold runners an equal temperature, if this mod won't do it, then I'll switch that 4mm tube back in...

seriously if u don't know what a egr is in the first place, DON'T MESS WITH IT...
lol it drops temperature by adding inert gas into the combustion chamber... you get better gas mileage cause you arn't using as much air/fuel because some of the chamber is inert gas which doesn't combust. smaller combustion = better mpg and lower emissions and lower temperature in teh combustion chamber seriously if you guys DONT know what your talking, then don't talk at all... please |

so does anyone notice the drop in the intake manifold temp. where your EGR is located after removing the hose?

egr ONLY opens at cruise...
it is NEVER on at full throttle.... so don't touch it, otherwise your going to get worse gas mileage normal driving around town, just drop it aight? |

EGR advantages- lowers combustion temps which reduces NOx emissions and reduces detonation, allowing for more aggressive ignition timing.
Disadvantages- may reduce throttle response, promotes carbon buildup in the intake. Over time and mileage the valve tends to stick and may leak, causing idle and/or driveability problems. Most factory EM has a way of monitoring the EGR so if it is removed completely a CEL will usually result. |

jesse, you are being a dolt. you belong in the fan boi forum, not the conversions forum. show us some street cred and perhaps i'll ask that importer shop why you were not fit for the op.

if u want higher combustion chamber temp's and bad gas mileage, then be the dope and block it off...
u wont pass emissions, you'll get ****ty gas mileage, and you will have a check engine on all the time... how is it a mod? |

Not too sure about the Full throttle.. If I'm Correct the EGR opens above 3K you can see the Suction of the engine pull it open, and the engine runs like Crap if you open it by hand. |

Exhaust Gas Recirculation In a nutshell it takes gases that were not burnt the first time around, they go for another pass. |

I have blocked this off on several engines that used non-EGR heads, but continued to use the Ej18 intake manifold and wiring harness. Or for other folks using EGR based EJ20's with different heads, but the original manifold, it would be the same. Just unplug it and block off that section of the manifold... |
