Post Anyone run NASA events?

I ran one of their autox's last year at the Meadowlands (NY Football Giants stadium) adn it was very interesting.

The course was very open (relative to SCCA) and you could hit 3rd gear in a couple spots. They do fastest time in class for a daily winner but award season points based on a total time for a set number of laps - rewarding consistency and emulating a road race.

Anyone do much of this? Opinions? I know the local SCCA power-that-be are VERY irritated at the NASA people, partly for the competition and partly for believing that NASA events are inherently dangerous. Truth be told, the higher speeds DO put you at more risk but I've seen MANY accidents at SCCA courses (usually from too-small venues).

Question

How many runs do you get at the NASA VMP events? How long are the runs? I'm thinking of the one on the 18th, but I want to make sure it's worth the 3 hr drive (one way).
TIA.

I don't know about VMP but here in good 'ole NJ we got 10 runs in and were done by 3pm. The really neat thing is that instead of walking the course everyone drives through in a low speed caravan, I got about 5 times thru in the car before I ever had to run at speed... MUCH better that walking!

Wow! 10 runs, huh? That might be worth the trip down from CT. I've heard that the events at Giants Stadium were pretty wide-open, but hadn't realized there were so many runs. How long (time-wise) are the courses?

I've run some of the NASA-VA autocrosses at VA Motorsports Park. I have gotten well into 3rd gear (flying!!) at a few of them. The courses are well designed and the space is so wide open that I have no worries of damaging my car or injuring anyone. I have seen some SCCA endorsed autocrosses in VERY tight lots that could go bad real quick especially in faster, oversteering RWD cars. I enjoy myself alot more at NASA events and plan to run them almost exclusively this year...C

The NASA events at VMP are usually 3 runs, but they run "fun" runs at the end. You could get quite a few extra runs if you wanted to.

The course is what makes it worth the drive. It usually takes me 2 hours to get there but is worth it for the high-speed course. C

I am a member of 2 clubs that run autocrosses at VMP. NASA-Va. and http://www.VMSC.org
Begining sometime last year 4 runs became standard. NASA has 5 Ax's there this year. VMSC has 12, check our web site. On most courses I usually get in 3rd twice, sometimes once and sometimes three times. Besides the shear size it's a great site because they have compressed air right there, large bath rooms, a grand stand providing a great view of the course and food and gas choices within 3 miles. Run times are usually around 48-54 sec. for me and I was the VMSC year end class champ for S/P which my STS car gets lumped in with. Karen Karus is the NASA Ax director and usually gets "name" autocrossers to do the course design. Plus they have a "Pro" class which draws the big guns from up to 200 miles to run. Over all I'd say the courses are about equal between the two clubs now that Karen is the director. Pre registration is recommended for both clubs and can be done on line.

Pat, IIRC, the course was under a minute and a half long...

So, Joe, are there just not very many participants at the events? 10 runs on a 90sec course and done by 3pm sounds too good to be true unless attendance is tiny.

Pat

Edit: I have a hard time spelling 3 letter names.

Pat, the time I went there were less than 40 cars... as opposed to NNJR SCCA where they regularly get 150 cars!

I cannot be certain that attendance is always so low, but it'd be great to see another Sube there.

Today was my b-day and my brother-in-law got me a NASA membership so I'll be at many autox and hopefully some track events - esp Lime Rock.

See ya!
