Default I the spare wheel/tire useless when you upgrade to 17s?

Can you use the spare tire with different wheels AS A SPARE TIRE. (if something goes wrong) Or would it not match up for the AWD?

Your aftermarket 17 inch wheel/tire combo should have the same overall diameter as the stock wheel/tire. So you should be fine using the spare. People seem to think that a 17 inch wheel will automatically make the tire's outer diameter larger, but if you get the correct sized tire it should be a very small difference. For example, a 215/45/17 tire is almost exactly the same height as the stock tire. If your question is about that little difference, I don't think it should matter as long as you keep the speed and distance to a minimum while driving on it. This is something you should do anyway. I can't tell you how many idiots I see weaving in and out of traffic doing 70 with a donut on.

Take a look at your spare tire. It's a temporary spare that WAY smaller in stock diameter than 205/55R16 anyways.

Switching to a 17, 18, 19, or 20" aftermarket wheels doesn't matter. It's still a temporary spare that you should use for the shortest distance to get your flat fixed or repaired.

Unless you have aftermarket front and rear brakes--then the spare is useless. I have the Subaru 4 pots up front. If I get a flat on one of my front tires I have to put the spare on one of my back wheels and put the back wheel on the front where the flat was.

I don't know if the Subaru rear 2 pots need a 7" or wider rim like the 4 pots but if they do then this would render the spare useless.

Have you tried?

I cant speak to the other big brake kits but, I actually think the spare that came in my 97 GT is compatible with the Subaru 4pot kit. I saw an overseas ad for a spare that fit over four pots and the dimensions are the same as the spare in my car. Give it a shot, Amitofu, you may well be suprised. I think subaru to save expense seems to have spares classified as either 14" or 16," and the 16" ones seem to fit everything up to and including 4pots(not the Brembo 4pots tho.)

subysouth, I think the 4 pots differ from other brake upgrades because they don't need a bigger diameter rim they need a wider rim. I recall the spare being pretty narrow too.

Ooohhh, but wait... Maybe the spare has a really low offset--dare I say negative offset. Do they even make wheels with negative offsets? Maybe this would allow the pare to fit.

I will try tomorrow or the next day. I hope I don't break anything

Default no

I'm pretty sure its still a postive offset. Its the shape of the face of the rim that is the key. Just like the WRX wheels, the shape and the postion of the spokes is the problem. If there was a 16x6.5" wide Volk TE37 in 53 offset it would clear the 4pots because of the bumped out spokes. The design of the wheel is the key.

Will a ROTA 17" wheel fit in the spare tire well? If so, why not buy an extra wheel just to be sure.

Pretty sure a standard 17" wheel with tire will fit in the spare well.

However, it is much taller than the donut spare, so the board will not seat as it does with the OEM spare. You'll either have to custom fabricate something to fit over the taller spare, deal with a wobbly board and carpet, or just take out the board and carpet altogether.

I know that a stock rim and wheel will fit in the compartment of the wagon and the board fits back on. The only difference is that the storage tray must be left out.

Default I am about 95% sure...

now that the spare that came stock on my Legacy GT will clear four pots. I talked to a friend of mine overseas that has a Ver.4 STi which came stock with the 4pots on the front. His spare is a 16" one with the same tire size as mine. He showed me a pic and they look identical.

My spare tire size is 135/70-16 and the rim is significantly"bellied" out between the mounting face and the outer rim. I imagine any of the Subies with 16" wheels stock came with this spare.

Yes. The spare has a positive offset. I know from this Sunday's experience. I popped one of my tires, tried to put on the spare with negative offset, my girlfriend telling me "Shouldn't it be the other way around?" Inevitability, she was correct, the spare was sticking out from the wheel well. I flipped it around, using the positive offset, and the spare fits perfectly in the fender well.
