Default EGT probe install: anyone know a good machine shop and/or want to help?

I need to reinstall my EGT probe into my header... the first installation has become loose and needs to be drilled out and retapped. So, anyone know a good auto machine shop in the Balto-Annapolis-DC area? Preferably one thats open on the weekend?

Also, anyone want to help me remove/reinstall the header to bring to the machine shop? I'm not all that experienced in these matters. You shall be handsomely rewarded with food and drink.

Jeff

Where exactly did you install it? I would like to have a bung welded onto my OEM manifold but I am a little confused as to the exact location and orientation of the probe. I have an extra manifold to work on so I can afford to experiment.

I had a shop weld a bung onto my Borla header for $60.

The first time it was just drilled and tapped by a friend. This time I would like to get it done professionally though. I was under the impression that welding into cast iron was not a good idea since it is so brittle already?

Depends on who does it. With a wire feed and a professional it shouldn't be a problem. Isn't the stock unit steel not iron? Cause I don't remember my stock piece being as heavy as iron.

It really looks like cast to me. So were exactly did you drill and tap? There is a flat thicker place that I think most people use but is this the correct place? I thought you were supposed to be monitoring as close as possible to #3 which is the leanest cylinder.

Dale,

The stock manifold is cast iron. You don't need to weld a bung on there because the iron is thick enough to drill and tap threads.

Only need a bung for steel headers.

I'm actually going to try to do my install this weekend

I'm simply going to remove the driver's side exhaust manifold and use the flat button where the two cylinders join (hehe, if everything goes well).

The discussion about whether to put this in Cyl 3 or 4 or elsewhere goes on endlessly on the other forums. Either place is just inches from the exhaust port.

I think more important is the response time of the thermocouple used. I ended up getting the Autometer competition unit.

If I botch mine....... well, I heard you have an extra manifold !

Gonz.

EDIT. I have the 1/8 NPT tap and the 11/32" drill bit if you want to borrow them.

eegads you guys are willing to pay alot! drill your own hole, buy the nut, and any decent welding shop should not charge more than $20 bucks. I've done this 4x around here.

Mine is drilled and tapped right where the manifold meets, just before the uppipe. I have heard about this "casting button" but I ave no idea where it is. Not that it matters, cause Ive already got a hole drilled, so Im going to do my best to use that one.

So I guess no one knows of a good machine shop to get this done professionally?

My plan was to take my car to Curry's in Chantilly, VA when I've got the gauges in.

Do not know of anything around here unfortunately.

I've only been to a machine shop once, found it in the yellow pages.

This isn't complicated stuff for someone who does it every day. I think any machine shop can handle this. Just look in the yellow pages for something close to your place.

You might want them to go up to the next size tap. Let's say 1/4" instead of 1/8" since you already have a hole which needs to be plugged or drilled out.

Take the probe with you, it may help them see just how far they need to tap. Good luck.
