How unfortunate. Regardless what happened, who's at fault, etc... it doesn't change the fact that 4 people are dead. Truly a scarring incident for anyone who knew them. I wish the families and friends the best in this dark time.

Apparently you've been living under a rock like Fred Flinstone. Even crap econoboxes will do 90+.

What pedestrian cars do you think don't hit 90+??

Giving your kid a car like that is ridiculous on several levels. First, you are giving him a ridiculous reward for a relatively minor achievement. He graduated highschool early, he didnt cure cancer. Get him a used car or something. Way to spoil the ****er. Second, its too much car too soon. Most kids aren't experienced or mature enough to handle a car like that. Big time parenting fail.

Age had something to do with it, and his fast car had something to do with it. That you can't see this, proves you're still too young to understand.
All I'm reading is assumption assumption. Nowhere have I said car had nothing to do with it, nowhere have I said age had nothing to do with it. I said age is not entirely the problem, and the 300hp car was not entirely the problem. At 16, I was smart enough not to go 100+ down a wet road with people in the car. This kid obviously wasn't. My underlying point is this: if he was stupid enough to do it in that car, he was stupid enough to do it in any car. Also, maybe he will/would have smarten up with age. Who knows. Some people don't.

There are signs in our subdivision at the entrance that say "Your almost home now, so you can slow down". I lost a brother to a car accident in '95. He was speeding. Ever since then, I have never been more than 15 over the speed limit.

Well, sadly enough wrx/sti got this kind of reputation everywhere in the US. The price point makes it really easy for racer wannabe to get one.

I envy the kid for having such a kind (feel free to substitute with soft, stupid or what not) parents. But maybe this kind of parents needs to consider including driving school as part of the gift.

Not sure about NY area but I remember seeing some kind of severe weather driving courses at Portland International Raceway in OR.

man...parents, PLEASE don't buy your kids a fast car as their first car...even if they are straight-A students who've never gotten in trouble...

you don't know how they act when they're around their friends...There are so many straight-A "perfect" kids who would shock you if you saw them in their own domain...

Saying one phrase when you meant another is a surefire way to confuse and sometimes completely invalidate the message.

It's a phrase that gets used wrongly. The fact that government and civilian agencies/groups keep repeating it....

Speed does not kill. People really need to stop saying it does. If speeding really did kill, there wouldn't be anyone going over any limit, right? Because they'd be dead. Even excessive speed, the 'excessive' is completely arbitrary because it depends on contribuatory factors and a pinch of judgement thrown in for good measure.

How fast one is going at the time is a factor in the extent of damage and survival rate. The mere nature of going fast does not kill becaue it's absent of the one thing that needs to be provided to make sure the killing can, in fact, happen... an opposing force.

Black ice must work differently in the NE. Black ice in the Midwest generally forms from freezing drizzle and on bridges which freeze before other road surfaces do. This generally happens when it's in the 33-34 degree range and raining/misting. Winter tires won't save you when you enter a bridge at any speed and need to turn. Keep dreaming.

Not all of us live in areas that see enough snow to necessiate the need for winter/snow tires. That's a fact. Seriously man, if you want to debate this topic further, I'll be happy to do it in a seperate thread
Sure Dr's and nurse call in sick all the time, and if everyone did it on a snow day who'd take care of the patients? The hospital here simplifies it, you call out on a snow day you'd better be dying or in need of the hospital yourself. No excuses on those days.

Hey, we get that kind of black ice too. But we don't get sit at home counting our cows, neither do a lot of people. And yet several test show that at a reasonable speed winter tires DO manage to turn on ice . I'm originally from Missouri, the last winter I was there we got enough ice that my cousin slid down his backyard and had to crawl up to the highway to get back home. I know ice.

Look, I get you want to justify your decisions and make yourself feel like you made the right choices but I don't think anyone but you and maybe two other peanut gallery people are buying it. Just because you don't think they make sense for you doesn't mean you should be spouting off bad info.

This is your original quote, this is WRONG. I'm sure I can find instances that disprove just about anything including existence if I really wanted to, doesn't make it less true. You're writing off winter tires because in ONE instance on BLACK ice at 50+mph they MAY not help you.

Ok as someone older (26) when I got my wrx not even sti... Yeah the difference in power is SHocking.

I went from a civic... Commuter car whih has what 100hp at the wheels? To a car with 220 at the wheels. The difference was astounding. And I had been driving for years at this point already.

Putting a young kid in a car like that is just asking for trouble.

Also the summer tires do blow when it's cold and wet out. I found out first hand. Bought mine mid January and we had a light snow the next day barely any on the road but my car was all over the place and this was temps in the upper 30s to low 40s.

So yes tires absolutely make a difference with those stock summers. They are in fact slicker than snot in just cold wet weather.

Got continental dws on order that day.

Ordered a winter set the next year. God I love my altimax arctics never going back to anything else for winter ever.

Relax, I got my first car at 17, almost 18 (2 more months) paid for it myself, and it was my 2008 wrx. Never got a ticket, no accidents, follows the rules on streets, have fun on backroads with cruises, but i understand my limits, i dont push my car if i dont feel 100% sure of getting off the hook. Its really more of having these straight A's kids working and understanding that money isnt easy to come by. Age does not equal wisdom. I am way beyond my years. work 2 jobs to pay for college, pay for my car, help my mom because she's "sick", watch my dad work 2 jobs too. personally, I think its because he's not responsible. Grades dont mean intelligence in real life, its two completely different things. Make your "smart" kids work and pay for their car. Makes a big difference.

I'm glad i'm an exception. Jobs do really make the difference and making the kid buy their own car too. although it wont make them not do stupid stuff, at least theyll understand the value of the dollar. Before I had a job, or two, I thought it was easy, and everything is like butterflies and honey. Then I worked my butt off and I understood that I gotta be careful because it wasnt as easy as I thought.

That and probably being responsible means I can driver Exotic cars. Being a porter has its benefits, especially when you port for super cars Wasnt easy to get that job. totally worth it.

I'm sure though you can agree that not everyone on the street is trained for the additional 15 feet/second for every 10mph. The faster an untrained person travels, the less time they have to react to other variables and they further they will go in their reaction time.

The inherent difference between going fast on a track and on public roads is that on the track there are many more controlled variables which the driver already knows and acknowledges. On the streets its a huge irresponsibility to go a distinguishable speed over the limit with unforeseen variables.

So while its true any speed you drive can be dangerous, I feel that the majority of drivers are untrained. So speed and aggressive driving, which are correlated, on public roads contribute to a fair share of accidents and deaths.

Correct. Speed, alone, does not kill. That's the whole point.

The "Speed Kills" phrase should be... killed, speedily.

seeing this stuff more times than i wanted to in my line of work as a firefighter. Most of it im pretty numb to including this. BUT its terrible that this was facilitated by the type of car most likely. would this have happend in honda civic? who knows.

Speed is an accomplice to death in an MVA. Sure the sudden stop at the end is what creates the trauma. but who cares about all that, DEAD= never coming back. EOS. condolences to the families involved.

Meh, he could have wrapped the car around a tree even if it was a 1995 Buick. I blame the driver more than anyone else. The parents probably didn't know he was out driving
