Default Help on cleaning wheels with polished lips

I just cleaned the turbo yesterday, after several months of neglect. I got to the wheels and noticed that there are some stains that just wouldn't come off. I think it's an accumulation of road grit, brake dust, and road salt. It looks like some of it has etched into the metal, but I can't be sure. These are IForged wheels btw, with pretty deep "polished" lips. I'm not too sure what the material is, but I think they're aluminum. Steel just doesn't sound right.

Well, I'm wondering if you guys know of any gentle, non abrasive cleaners that I can get. I want to try and get back some of the original luster. Hell, they're only 5 months old, but they look like they're 2 years old now. After all the cleaning, I'm gonna hammer on the car again when I go to PIR next month!

Thanks!
btw, aren't some of you supposed to be coming by our shop for lunch?!

Did you try a bit of metal polish?

Metal polish? Are you talking about something like Brasso? I don' think they are designed to remove the above mentioned accumulation. Plus, they have a scouring effect. It would take a LOT of work to get out the hairline streaks...

Try something like autosol with steel wool. I've had good luck with it.

Thumbs up

Easy, just do a quick browse at Canadian Tire or search on the internet. Here's what I use:

Black Magic Wheel Polish

Product# 39-2982-0

Price $4.99

Availability:
In Store, Canadian Tire

Features:
- Safely cleans, polishes and protects all polished metal surfaces
- Use on mag and aluminum wheels and metal trim
- Removes oxidation, dirt and contaminants
- Adds long-lasting protection and brilliant shine
- Safe for use on all clear coat surfaces
- 296 mL
20pwns

p.s. This stuff works on SS exhaust canisters with heavy oxidation and stains from salt and grime. Works better if the surface is cleaned and warm.

fukamoto,

Yeah, the wheels are in some pretty bad shape. I gonna try that Black Magic stuff and see what happens.

What happened to your car? It was a silver turbo'd gc8 with no wing, wasn't it? That was what I always wanted to do with my old car....

You can swing by anytime you like! we just got in some first-of-the-season asparagus. very tasty!

Jeebsus....that is pretty bad. So when you get a new one? I love the white and gold combo. That's gonna be my next choice....

about the turbo, unfortunately i don't have it registered at the moment (garaged), but that'll change at the end of this month.

mooshoo,

You know what else you can try to remove contaminents from your wheels and/ or your paint is a detailing product called "Clay Bar"

Yes, its actually a piece of soft clay, but it comes with a bottle of spray wax which you apply first, then gently rub the clay over the area that you wish to clean, and you'll be amazed at how smooth your wheels will come out. Its delicate enough for your paint finish as well (actually thats what its intended for) but I use it on everything, even my exhaust tip. Give it a shot, its about $16 at your local auto store.
