header WRAP question
Just ordered borla headers for my 02 RS and had a couple question about wrapping it
A) safety? Ive been googling and whatnot and read that people dont like it because of the possiblitiy of fires, ie: oil drips on to wrap and catches fire which cant be put out. B) durability: not regarding the wrap - but regarding the headers. Is the increased heat going to cauze the metal to fail & or rust before it should? (has anyone had stainless steel exhaust components (of any sort) rust on them?). C) brand and technique? any one have any suggestion on the brand of wrap to buy and technique on wrapping the headers? (asssuming questions one and two are moot points) Thanks all! edit: of topic: should I get new gaskets and bolts for the header install? (anyone have part numbers or the like for me?)

get new gaskets, thats a definatie.. wait and see how hard the studs are to get out of the engine and then do your evaluation from there.. just go down to a subaru dealer and they should have the studs and nuts there..

I've heard that Borla will void its "Million-mile waranty" if you use header-wrap, because the increased heat of the exhaust gasses will cause the welds on the header to fail. It's probably not a good idea to wrap them. Instead, why not consider getting them coated with Jet Hot or some other heat-retaining coating? Many exhaust shops can probably help you out with that, and it would only be slightly more expensive.
Just out of curiosity, what gaskets have to be replaced when installing a new header? I didn't replace any of mine when I used my Borlas, and I haven't detected any exhaust leaks (yet). |

i replaced the gaskets for where it connects to the cat and also the ones on both sides of where the header connects to the block... since the header was new, its best in my opinion to replace the gaskets too..

I dont know about Borla voiding the warrenty if you wrap. I talked them into including wrap in my warrenty replacement. They sent me 2 boxes of wrap for free. They said this would help with the P0420 CEL.
I have had mine wrapped for almost 3 years now, (40k miles) and they havent done anything. no rust or discoloration from the last time I had to wrap a portion. the bad thing about the wrap is the header location. Since they hang down under the car if you scrap them on anything the wrap gets broken and starts to unwind. Then you have crap hanging down and have to get under there and fix it. A thermal coating would not have this problem. J |

would it be a bad idea to paint the header with high temp paint (how hot does a header on our cars get anyways) before wrapping it to help prevent rust formation?
