Default Subaru Extra-S 75w90

Well, I read and read and read on different differential and tranny fluids to use on my 2009 WRX. I read about people mixing things and making "cocktails", i read about synthetics, non synthetics, Mobil, redline, valvoline, mixing crap.

I Honestly found it only made things more confusing for myself and I'm sure others out there.............WELL...........I am writing this to tell people to simply use Subaru EXTRA S. This stuff is amazing. My car has never felt so nice, even the day I bought it brand new. She shifts smoothly the tranny is quieter and even going into reverse is better. I live in Canada where the weather is cool (Vancouver, so not terribly cold) and mornings the transmission and diff are absolutely smooth.

My opinion, DON'T waste your time with so called "COCKTAILS". Just spend the cash on this stuff and you will not be disappointed. Got mine through Fred Bean.

your...opinion...YOUR opinion

OK....great

but in the 10 years since a certain 'cocktail' has been in use by THOUSANDS of people all over the world, the very vast majority of responses have been positive.

so, in the end, YOUR opinion is...well.....meh

between different forums I have read general consensus is that especially for newer 6MT extra s is the ****. Never had issues with mine, always smooth but on first impression reverse goes in smoother. Planning to get a barrel and treat tranny and diff here and there. Yes, my opinion.

funny, uncle scooters "cocktail" mix has had some pretty mixed reviews. trannys sticking, clunking and chunking and don't forget the GREEN GOO and gunked up parts everyone complains about with this "COCKTAIL" ........IMO, DO NOT USE THIS CRAP. Anyhow, not my point to start S**T on this forum. Extra S is the cats meow. I'm sure others would and will agree. And why is it Uncle Scott seems to hi-jack threads. just sayin'

I had some success with Subaru's extra-s while in SoCal and in Hawaii. Then my 02's 1st gear syncro and 2nd started to act up, Unc's cocktail stopped it.

Now in Seattle, ive used straight up redline per a vendor here on this board when i had them service my 04. Nothing but problems. What did i have before? A cocktail, though specifically the one suggested by AndrewTech, who builds some pretty tough transmissions for Subaru. Ive used extra-s in this car too, but small bottles are hard to come by, and the cocktail has worked just as good with no issues, ever.

Your opinion is just that, with your particular car which has one specific transmission in a particular climate. It may or may not work for others with a different car, or climate.

+1 For Subaru Extra-S. Never had a problem with it, so no need to change.

Have you tried the different fluids? I don't think anyone deserves much of a comparison opinion if you haven't actually tried them. I've tried Scotty's and Motul. Scottys is half the price and works wonders. And remember every tranny is different.

And I will not give an opinion on Extra-S being better or worse because I haven't tried it. However, I will trust scotty...because well he's got a lot more experience than a lot of us.

and this, in general, is the concensus of the vast majority of those who have both POSTED and who have PM'd or emailed me on this

MANY who have reported poor results have used THE WRONG INGREDIENTS and/or have substituted what THEY thought was 'the same thing' and had poor or just plain BAD results....or they used the wrong ratios....or did something wrong

or had an already blown up transmission and blamed THAT on using the 'cocktail'

i have kept track of this over the last 10 years and have improved and changed the 'cocktail' over the years and it is now better than ever.

maybe some of those who want so badly to slam me here use this as an avenue for THAT.....with poor results, as it just does not bear out in reality

there is NOTHING and never has been ANYTHING in any of the 'cocktails' that is GREEN....thus, this leads me to believe that idiots used the WRONG PRODUCTS.....and MANY MANY MANY years ago, Redline had a bad batch of shockproof that congealed and prompted some of this kind of thing being posted...this is an aincent issue and unless you are using shockproof OLDER THAN 10 YEARS...wont be any issue

and i could go on and on and on about some of the idiots who blame their already broken car on using the 'cocktail' and were pissed when it didnt work

I have used a couple different types on this car now, what came with it stock from subaru, redline, and now extra-s. Extra S is by far the best yet. When I had my 06 WRX I used a "cocktail" of sorts, but not uncle scooters and it was, meh. But I mainly used Dino Valvoline 75w90 when I could find it. Now for some reason that is no longer available.

I did not mean to start a battle with Uncle Scotty, just wanted to post what I have found to be the best fluid I've used. The only reason I have a beef with the "cocktails" is the simple fact I have seen the results of people using this stuff in there Subies. (2 people). Both take good care of there vehicles so I doubt negligence is what caused the issue. But hey, ya never know.

If you do searches for what fluid to use, A LOT of opinions come up. What I know is this, in my climate, on my tranny, on my 2009 WRX the EXTRA-S hands down is the best fluid I've used. So, if someone lives in Vancouver, Northwest USA with a 2009 WRX, well then I suggest EXTRA-S. There, is that better uncle Scooot?

No it's not better. You should post your review of your results and not make blanket statements. And know that what you are recommending is akin to recommending that people put salt on their french fries as we've been recommending that fluid here since you were in high school. Had you searched even slightly here or in the CORRECT FORUM, you'd see that many people recommend it.

I've used Extra S, Valvoline syn, Redline NS; Extra S is the best of that bunch, in terms of shifting performance. Never had a problem with it unless it's a cold start and ambient temps are below 20F.

Haven't tried the cocktail since that seems to have been created to mask failing syncros, and mine are apparently in good shape after 96k miles; e.g. no need.

I can attest to using Extra S for roughly 22k miles. It's great gear oil. I now have switched to Valvoline dino with the same results as the Extra S and it's cheaper. I have seen great results so far. I.did have a hard time finding the Valvoline. I found two at Pepboys and the other two at AutoZone, lucky me I guess. For the next gear oil change I may purchase some Extra S, that's of course if I want to spend an Extra 50 bucks. I have heard great things about Scottys mix and thank him for taking the time to put something together like this for the community.

I've used Mobil 1, not good, the Scooter's cocktail blend, decent at best. Extra s made my junk the happiest.

Maybe, but its definitely better for my ride. She sounds nice and shifts nice. Much quieter for sure, from the redline I had previously anyways. The Dino valvoline was its closest competitor as far as my car goes. Like I have said, its my opinion..........may not be right for all, but definitely right for me.
