A rear wheel stud change?
Hello,
If I have to change a rear wheel stud, do I have to also replace the wheel bearing too? I have looked here and at Scoobymods, but the walkthroughs that I saw were for a 2002 Subaru and I think a 2004, but mine is a 2006 WRX. I was hoping it would be just the wheel stud and that's all, but I don't know. Thanks

just hit the stud out with a hammer and then pull back the brake shoe to get it out, then just put the new one in and thread a open faced lug nut on untill it is drawn back into place.
i actually just did this yesterday to a 3000gt lol |

Thank you for the replies. That takes a load off of my mind. I would have responded sooner, but I have been water-proofing my basement the past 2 days and it has been hell.
Thanks again. |

Just make sure you move the ABS tone ring out of the way first. You definitely don't want to smash that.

Had to change one on my '07. It's fairly easy. If you can do a brake job, you can figure it out.
As for the abs ring, I think it is held in with one bolt, maybe two. If I remember correctly, it's magnetic too. |

Re: A rear wheel stud change?
It's the silver ring behind the face of the hub. It's held on by 4 or 5 5mm hex bolts. Once you have those out, it's pretty easy to move around, as long as you took the sensor out first. Finagling the new stud into the hole is a bit tricky though. I used a pair of needlenose pliers.

Use one of those magnet sticks to gain control of the bolt..taking it out or putting it in through the hole..it will help.
As for the tone ring its easy to move around it after its off the bolts..just make sure u don't pressure it. I didn't know and I used it to help secure the bolt back in and tried tighten it and it cracked it. Been driving with the ABS light for like 2 month lol..its gonna cost me 3-400 bills at the dealer to change the bearings n all that. |
