How do you change the wheel stud in the rear??? I stripped one and I need to change it out??. Do you have to take the whole hub out?? If so, HOw??????

I'm pretty sure that's a yes. You'd have to remove the hub assembly from the car (unbolt the rear caliper, struts, trailing arm, lateral links, parking brake cable, ABS sensor, and remove the brake rotor and such. Then the hub needs to be pressed out of the hub assembly. Then the stud has to be pressed out of the hub and a new one pressed in. Then the hub needs to be pressed back into the hub assembly and then reassemble everything.
But I could be wrong. I've never actually looked at it. But that's what I'd assume you'd have to do. |

I would think that, if there is enough room to slip a new stud through the hole from behind the hub, then it can be done with everything on the car. I seem to remember someone describing the procedure here and saying they just drove the old stud out, inserted the new one and used a lug nut to draw the new stud into the hub.
I also seem to remember reading that it was designed to be changed that way because rally teams break studs all the time and need to replace them with out tearing everything apart. Buy, hey, I could be wrong. Edit: A quick search on "stud replace" indicates that it can be done with the hubs in place. Rear ones can be a little tricky w/ regard to clearance because of the parking brake shoes. But, I'd bet rotating the hub so that the stud pops out between the shoes would do the trick. Anyway, do the same search and read up. Last edited by ITWRX4ME; 10-20-2003 at 02:19 PM. |
