Default Replacing rear wheel studs, difficulty?

I know the fronts don't require the removal of the hub, but what about the rear? How hard is it to remove the stud?

Bump for more info. You can not replace the rear studs with longer studs without replacing the rear wheel bearings. Stock sized bolts will barely fit without removing the axle nut.

Edit that to read incorrect info........

I replaced our 98RS rear studs with longer ones without removing the hub at all.

It was not fun......but it is possible.

Alright, I'm gonna Frankensein this thread (you know, bring it back from the dead).

I've apparently jacked up the threads on a rear wheel stud on my WRX and I have to replace it in the next 48 hours. I'm going to call around to dealerships and find a part today while I'm at work. What I need to know is how I go about replacing the stud. Anyone got step by step instructions? That would help a lot and be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Here are the step by step instructions for the WRX/STi rear wheel studs at ScoobyMods.com:

http://scoobymods.com/forums/showthr...4758#post14758

I just finished putting 60mm NISMO studs on the rear of my WRX and I didn't have to take the hub apart. However, I did have to yank one of the E-brake shoes and one of the bolts that runs through the backing plate. If you do that, it's not necessary to pull the ABS sensor. It's hard to tell from this pic, but the rear of this wheel stud is actually in the hole that the bolt came out of.

Even taking the E-brake apart on each side of the car, I think the total time was a little over 2 hours.

I had to go and open my big mouth. The rears were easy, but when I tried doing the fronts the next day, it took nearly 2 hours just to get the front calipers off. Then I managed to seize a lugnut to one of the new studs when I was pulling it through the hub. I tried icing it, I tried heating it, I tried banging on it with a hammer. I tried breaking it loose with an impact gun. I could not get it to come off and finally just sawed the stud in half and put a stock one back in. I ordered 3 new studs and will have to take it apart again. Total time on the fronts was probably 7-8 hours.

On a 2004 STi the front studs were really easy, but the rears seemed impossible with long studs. The instructions on Scoobymods just didn't work at all with long studs (in this case H&Rs part of their 15mm spacer kit) for the STi rears. I have been told that with the WRX it was really easy and after some conversation it seems the design is different. I ended getting raped by a shop on replacing the bearings. God I hope nothing happens to my rear studs now.

I tried the scoobymods directions, and there was no way the longer studs were going in until I added 2 steps. It wouldn't work until I pulled one of the E-brake shoes and pulled one of the hub bolts. By putting the back of the stud into the hub bolt hole and the front of the stud in the hole in the face of the hub (at an angle), I was able to ratate the hub until the stud was straight and then pull it through. It was a tight fit, but it worked. I don't know if the STi(I)'s are different enough that that wouldn't work. You're of course welcome to give me yours so I can check...
