It did it with the traction control on too, but the traction control kicked in right away. With the traction control off, it still comes on, but you have to be almost sideways before it kicks in. I don't have winter tires, so it's not hard at all to induce oversteer. I'll probably go around every corner in the snow this winter steering with the throttle.

Lots of snow today!
Did 360s in the cathedral of St. Paul parking lot, then smoked a couple Jeeps on the way home. |

Is yours a manual or auto? I'm wanting to pick one of these up. Part of the reason being that the stablity control isn't as up tight as other cars on the market, at least from what I've heard...

So today I took my manual premium out in the snow and can confirm what others have said. The stability control feature does seem to come on (I could hear something I believe was brake chatter), but it only happens when the car starts to go pretty much sideways, and it wasn't stopping me from having fun and drifting the sucker around pretty well. This was of course with the trac/stabili set to off. A salesman told me that the stability and traction control can be turned off but reengage at 25mph and above automatically. I have nowhere to go fast enough to test this...has anyone else been able to prove or disprove this claim?

Took out my 2013 base model 5sp out in about 7" of untouched powder in a large parking lot. Definitley had some fun but would love a solution to disable the tc completely. Question though.. when the tc kicks in is it detrimental to the drivetrain or car in any way? Especially when it kicks in a lot in a short period of time

Just had our car out and the stability control didn't interfer to much. I took some corners harder then normal in the snow and got on it alittle. The rear would start to come around and then it would straighten itself out. Car handled really well.
So I would say it kicked in when it should. However if you really want to have fun sliding the car around I could see where it would be annoying. On a side note, I felt the stability control in my Focus worked better then the Impreza. At least on the corner I took the Impreza seemed to understeer longer before the system kicked in. However they seem to allow for about the same amount of rotation before kicking in. |

was testing this a bit today. need more snow/icy parking lots...anyway..
it seems that if you can start to drift and then control the drift with throttle only, the car will let you. the moment you move the steering wheel, the stabilty control kicks and ruins your fun. |

idk, with the limited space i had, i was on top of a parking deck after a day of freezing rain and freezing temperatures. the impreza on dws tires was easy to slide around.

but with the stock tires i can slide very easy, but if i turn the wheel at all while sliding it seems to activate the stability control. so it seems like more practice is required so i can figure out the right amount of throttle/wheel combination to slide w/o over-doing it so i can avoid the stability control btw we had last weekend what you guys down south got yesterday/today |

I was testing some more this morning, if you can start the drift and then control with throttle and not turn the wheel you can have a lot of fun. I tried it with and w/o traction control on and both seem to have no affect as long as you don't turn the wheel with the gas applied. You can let off the gas, correct the wheel, then hit the gas again and continue to drift

SO I bought a 11 WRX and ordered some snow tires on steel wheels at the same time. I did the Cobb stage one crap and loved the car! The best (my 1st new car besides a work van) car I've ever owned***8230; But I made a mistake. I got the sedan***8230; A year later Realizing that I was spending $1300 a month in fuel for my tiny business I got to thinking***8230; Maybe I need a small fuel efficient car to take care of the running around and some small jobs. I needed a hatchback! I did the unthinkable and traded the WRX for a 12 Impreza CVT hatch. Now don't get me wrong I love my Impreza! It does everything it is designed to do and more but man I miss the extra 150hp and parking lot victimization.
I'm going to call Cobb and talk to one of the engineers to see if they are going to make a AP map that will just rid the car of this crap by pushing a button***8230; and spending $600 on there product. I think that will be our only hope. Till then I have this***8230; A report will follow. |

Well that was fast***8230; The answer is no.. They said they are focusing on turbo charged cars only. He did say that they have talked about making maps for the standard car in the past and that the issue has been brought up but not they don't have enough market to invest the time. I say we get together and make a plea to them to DO IT!!! Cobb is a fantastic organization but until they see the prospect of making $$ they wont help us. I don't blame them. Any ideas on how we can tell them that we will spend for a fix on our winter fun issue??

Maybe something like, we get enough of us to make a deposit on paying for the map. Once they get enough deposits, they would do it.

I'm just trying to help***8230; The fact is that Subaru made the system redundant and you are not going to be able to just pull a fuse or find a hidden button somewhere. You are going to need to remap the ECM and tell it not to give a crap when you are sliding***8230;

Enthusiasts aren't the target market for Impreza and CrossTrek. I reckon they figure we'll buy the WRX and BRZ. This electronic interference is only going to get worse with each new generation. |

Correct. Most enthusiasts will spend the extra few thousand and buy a WRX or BRZ. I did and told myself the entire time that the WRX was practical and fun. Wish I got the hatch!!!
I don't think the new Impreza will ever be turned into a WRX or STI model. I think this new car is the beginning of a separation of the nasty sports car and the everyday driver. Maybe in the future they will make a turbo 1.8L with 148hp for the standard Impreza and keep the WRX and STI the nasty 2.5L turbo. I think If they do that they can use the STI chassis and the Impreza engine to develop the next generation Subaru Rally and still be able to keep the performance/economy people respectively happy while fitting into the WRC regulations. We will see***8230; |

I have a Crosstrek CVT 60/40 split. I found the best way is to disable the VDC (only turns off the throttle limiter), use the manual mode staying in first gear (second if needed for a short period of time), and use the Ebrake. Here is what I came up with.

And if you want to see the difference in what the WRX can do check out my YouTube channel for some 2011 WRX snow drifting.
