Question Bedding used track pads to different rotors?

I have a set of Carbotech XP10's that I used last year with a different set of rotors. Pads have lots of life left, is there a procedure to bed them to the rotors? The rotors are used as well so I'm thinking they need to bed to take the shape? Should I do something similar to the original bedding procedure?

Thanks.

I would concur that just bedding in as original shoudl be good. Just be careful that the rotors you're bedding in had stockish type compound (or know what pad was used before). Some companies/compounds are known to leave a residue on the rotor. Just might make the XP10s a little less grabby...

If anything, just have the rotors turned at a local shop, that way, you have a nice smooth surface to start from and it should remove any compound, if any resided.

I have used a 3M scotchbrite pad and brake clean to get a clean rotor surface before bedding.

But the only time I bedded used pads, I sanded the surface of the pad to remove the "glazed" look before I installed them. I don't know if it made a difference or not....

Just don't wait to do it at the track. As KC mentioned there could be deposits (there should be it's normal) from the other pads which at best will results in less bite but worse it could shudder horribly.

It might be difficult to bed the pads in anywhere but the track but I would try.

Good luck!

If the rotors were used with another brand of pad other than Carbotech, I'd do the Scotchbrite & brake cleaner before trying to bed them. Follow the new pad bed in procedure. Turning the rotors will do the job as well. My experience has been that the Carbotech compounds don't clean off the old stuff on the rotor - maybe because the Carbotechs don't seem to wear the rotors as much.

My understanding has been that the end of the bedding procedure is to let the brakes cool down to ambient temperature over the course of several hours. I'm not sure how much difference it makes, but this would probably be difficult at the track. Doing it the night before at least would probably be a good idea so they have time to cool down.

No one with a real race car beds them in anywhere but the track, right? Most of us use the same brake pads so we don't worry about the effects that a different compound would cause. If the shutter is extremely bad you'll be able to get your rotors turned before your event. This was my main point.

It's also extremely difficult to get "real" race pads up to temp anywhere but at the track. You basically need to get them hot enough to gas out (it feels like you just lost 50% of your braking power) and to transfer material to the rotor. Most of us just do this during the morning practice session and then the pads are good to go for the race sessions.

Your case is a little different since your pads aren't new.

Thanks for the input. I'll try cleaning up the rotors then put the pads on this week and bed them in and see how they feel. I'm tempted to just get another set of rotors (at least fronts) from Autozone and use the Carbotechs with those to minimize any issues.
