Default Let's get some veteran advice...

I had my 2008 WRX hatch and loved it, had quite a few mods done @ Forged Performance by the previous owner and the rest done at Performance Race Solutions in Daytona and man did I love this car...

Long story short, I've traded it and gone through 4 cars since trying to find the one I like... I've come back to getting another Subi..

Currently I have a new G37S Coupe.. great car, handles great, luxuries are second to none, but it's just not a subi.. and I don't want to pay $30+ just to correctly twin turbo and build the motor (have the build invoice from Forged, almost $34k)

Should I go with the new STi, or just get a base WRX if I plan to mod the car anyways?? I'm not looking for 800+ HP.. I would ideally like to do either a GT30 or GT35R and make between 400-500hp and do proper supporting mods to maintain reliability...

The luxury doesn't really matter, I can always add navigation, change the seats, etc etc...

Thanks for the help!!!

STI. If it's going to be making 400-500hp (and you want it somewhat reliable), the STI drivetrain will be much happier than the wrx drivetrain.

I agree with this man. Plus you will have better brakes and chicks really dig DCCD.

It really depends.. Ppg gears would be happier with that kind of power than the sti 6 speed. But then again the 6 speed would probably be fine and you'd have to pay out the money for a big brake kit and Ppg transmission which would make up the price difference between the two anyways. But maybe you'd want an even bigger brake kit than the sti in which case wrx would be cost effective again...

Plus with sti you get dccd and lsds stock. I'd probably go sti for that sort of power.

This is what will happen to a stock WRX transmission on those kind of power levels \/

HERE is his post with the blown gear.

Take a look at Xluben's build. HERE

He is hitting large numbers on the WRX. His build will give you some kind of idea what needs to go into the car to make it handle the power.

Yep that's exactly what my 3rd gear looked like. Go with the sti for the better drive train.

WRX's have the same ishty cast pistons as the STI. OP plans on around 400 whp, that's not going to happen on a stock block anyway. Either way, he will need to build his engine.

Just grenaded 3rd on my 5-speed as well. Sounds like you easily have the means to go with the STi.

Agreed with the above -- you will have to build the motor.

Here's my typical progression, the same as many like me for a WRX:
1) Bolt-ons and a tune.
2) Cracked #4 ringland.
3) Build motor for more horsepower
4) Strip third
5) Install 6mt. In my case, I'm going with a JDM 6-speed because like the close ratios. And of course a beefier 5-speed (PPG's etc.) is always an option.

You might even consider a new STi and install some drop-ins right away.

STI will probably save you money in the long run with your plans.

I plan on building the motor on anything I do... I'm not swimming in cash, so it's not like I'm going to full out build anything immediately... I'm just looking at what would be more cost effective over time, I would really like an 06-07 but I have a hard time paying almost the same price I could get a used 2011-2012 for...

Have to admit, the '06-07 model year Rexes are my favorite, and have held their value well.

Do you think the PPG gears would be as reliable as the dogbox?? Granted I won't be drag racing or pulling everywhere I go... I love to actually "drive" the car but at the same time I wouldn't say I abuse any of my vehicles...

You DO NOT seek transmission advice in this forum. Hell, you probably shouldn't even do so in the transmission forum. CALL a professional. www.andrewtechautomotive.com is a quality vendor that knows their ass from a hole in the ground. Spending $5000 on a trans is not something to chat about on the internet.

PPG makes gears. They make synchro boxes. They make dog boxes. You cannot compare gears with engagement types. There are other options and you need to based them on budget and car's use, neither of which we know. Call a pro.

Do not get a dog box if you plan on driving it anywhere but the track you will hate your life.
