knuckles, suspension and ride height 99 Legacy sedan
ok so i have a 99 legacy sedan (you all know it, its the one Bad Wagon AKA Girodisc built) currently running GC8 KYB AGX struts all around, with eibach lowering springs and front and rear camber plates. when they were put on the car the front end sat almost a full 2 inches higher than the rear. Johann cut the springs and dropped it another inch but without taking significantly more we couldnt get it to sit correctly
so... my question is why? johann thinks it may have to do with the fact that i am running 98 outback knuckles all around and that the fronts may be a higher profile than the mounting points on a gc8. but wouldnt the rears be the same case? why would they be 2" higher in the front (before cutting the springs? any ideas? if i have to replace the front knuckles with ones from an impreza im down to do it but i have to be certain. thanks guys!

here is a pic, you can see just how much more wheel gap there is in the front... |

No, the upright/knuckle, from a geometry standpoint, is the same on everything. The outback is taller because of the struts, springs, tires, and spacers between the crossmembers and body. ABS sensors and bearings changed a little over the years and the newer sti uprights are wider where the strut attaches but that is all.
What are the springs supposed to go on? Mixing springs and struts between models and generations usually results in a funky ride height because the spring perches that are welded onto the struts are in different places depending on what they are for. |

thats what i thought,
the springs are for a GC8 also, the suspension sat just fine on his gf's GC here is a pic of that even seems to be sitting a little higher in the back if anything on the coupe it is very weird that it would do this. same thing happened to my other friend's GC when we put legacy suspension on it for winter. jacked the front up but the back stayed at correct height. very wierd. |

so i guess the 2 other things i can see effecting wheel position would be sway bars and mounting position. the rears could mount higher up in relation to the bottom of the car in legacy's in the rear and therefore the strut is up in the body more. ive never actually measured these things but it makes sense as the legacy is a larger car
and as far as sway bars go if mine werent wide enough couldnt it technically effect the location of the wheels? i mean its just an idea, again i have only ever dealt with stock suspension set ups in the past, nothing this advanced. |

so GC springs and GC struts worked great on a GC, but don't work on a different chassis? Doesn't seem wierd to me.
And swaybars have nothing to do with this. |

well obviously they are different but there is no way the gc has strut mounts in the front that mount 2" higher in the engine bay than a legacy...

The front uprights are the same part number between the Outback and Legacy.
What is different between the GC and BD is the rear strut/spring/mount. So I would say it's not that the front suspension is 2" higher, it's that the rear is lower. |
