Sounds like PZEV / cold issue?
Greetings, have been perusing the Impreza threads because I was in the market for a 2013. It seems like there might be a slight consensus that the PZEV and/or cold = poor mpg?
Does that seem to be it? I recall reading messages mentioning the torque converter not locking up, high RPMS, and firing timing being possible explanations... If that's indeed the case is that something they may tweak or fix or is it a permanent effect of the engine/PZEV? |

Very low MPG:
So in other words, if you buy one understand that how you drive it, and the type of driving you do, will yield either great or low mpg's. Simple to understand for most of us. My last car I saw 2mpg better than the EPA rating, this car right on the mark for the same drive and same driving style. So if you buy an Impreza expecting to do better than a comparable FWD car, probably not gonna happen. On the other hand, handles nice, very solid, and an absolute beast in the snow (with snow tires on it), and the hatch is huge |

And the hatch is huge- it's absolutely huge. It does most all things very well. There are cars better in almost all aspects ( less awd I'm convinced), however they can't do near as much near as well. And all for a very reasonable price vs. most other new vehicles that's comparable in capabilities ( and that's mainly light SUV's)

The hatch is cavernous. Had the back seats down over the weekend and was reminded of how much space there really is back there. Helps that the rear seats fold flat, and there's nothing obstructing the space the whole way through. |

Yesterday I drove from Warrenton, VA to Philadelphia, PA and back to Warrenton. I averaged 36.8 MPG (Ultra-gauge calculated and pump calculation verified (36.78)) in with temperatures ranging from the mid 70's in the morning to the high 80's in the afternoon and the air conditioner running the entire time. This was all highway with about 1.5 hours of idling in Philadelphia while I was waiting for my passport to be made. I was doing about 10-15 over the limit to keep up with traffic in VA, DE, and PA but I stayed within 4 MPH of the posted limit while I went through the Peoples Republic of Maryland.
Overall I am still very happy with my purchase. The car is versatile, comfortable, and the mileage has been as advertised for me. I will be hitting the 40,000 mile mark this weekend and I haven't had any issues. |

I have to admit that half the time I'm driving, I'm staring at that damn Eco gauge. That's an easy way to learn how to drive and get great mpgs

Thought I would add this to the fire, as its interesting and makes me wonder why they just didnt give us the 2.5 engine instead, if MPG were close and a little extra oomph wouldn't be unwelcome:

I've gotten over 50 mpg in my Impreza CVT. Unfortunately that is not at what could be remotely considered highway speeds, except by some people here. But, again, as in all posts here that is only anecdotal evidence. I also get 8 to 10 mpg less than with my Corolla which is also rated at 36 mpg highway, same as the CVT - under identical driving conditions. Comparative A/B testing, somewhat better than simply checking mph without an in depth look, reveals the disparity of the two vehicles' gasoline consumption with somewhat more robustness. Best of all is checking out Consumer Reports' real world mpg comparisons, where the Impreza ranks no better than the 30 mpg highway EPA of the others getting the same highway mpg on its tests. But that one is really difficult to understand for some of us... The 5 speed manual at least gets close to what is claimed... |

So maybe the corolla is more forgiving for your type of driving. Just went on a toyota forum and you know what? Some folks seem to get great mpgs on their corolla while others do not, isn't that crazy!

I finally took my 13 impreza sport CVT for a long trip. (3000 miles on the car)
Seattle -> Euegene cruise control most of the way with little to no traffic. avg mph 65 avg mpg 28.9 ... I get 26-28mpg avg on my weekly commute to work with 50/50 city/hwy. The only way i can imagine hitting 36+ If i had been driving 50 the entire way. My 2008 impreza automatic does 29-30mpg in the same trip. How is that possible? The more I own this car the more I regret buying it. Im still trying to ignore all the rattling and clanking in low RPMs between 1-2nd gear. The dealer says thats normal. |

2012 WRX hatchback.I don't get nearly as much MPG as you guys get. I am a newbie Subaru owner and a newbie to forums in general. I get 18.6 MPG. Well at least that what shows on the little screen that gives you the MPG and the time. I mean I had some work done to it but still im not racing. Maybe someone can help me to get better MPG. It would really be appreciated. I also need a Dyno Tune. I had some guys do some work on my car and I want a second opinion. If it was local I wouldn't care as much but I had to drive from Brooklyn to Connecticut. Roughly 3 hours. Please somebody help

I have just over 2000 miles on my 2013 Impreza Sport Limited that I bought a few months ago, and my regular average is 27mpg on a tank. I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it but I use the paddle shifters about 70% of the time. Not my first CVT, I upgraded from a Prius to my Sub hahaha.

I have a 2011 WRX with 60k on the odometer, I average 24-26mpg per tank depending on how much highway driving. Too bad I got a turbo car, I could have gotten 3-4 more mpg *ducks*

1. If your CVT averages 50 MPG in any conditions, your car is not broken. 2. EPA testing is done at an average speed of 48 MPH. If your Corolla just happens to not suffer a significant MPG penalty at 70+ MPH, consider it a gift, but don't expect the same from the Impreza. From 48 MPH to 70, aero drag more than doubles. If you have an issue with the EPA's idea of highway driving, take it up with them. |

Back to summer gas, it's definitely over 10 mpg better than the identically rated Corolla. I can drive either car on my extended commute, so I don't have the advantage(?) of playing dumb and saying "Well I like the car and so I don't care how it compares" nor do I have the advantage(??) of not even owning a CVT so I can comment from an oblivious point of view.
