My next project since my car is finished. Gran Tourismo Arcade Game
Well since there is nothing to do and my car is finished I decided to build something. What it is, I had no idea, but i wanted to make something with what i already had. I used to do air suspension, front end tube chassis, and some other custom fabrication so I had tons of air suspension parts laying around my house. I decided to make a small arcade game for my garage. Basically it will have these parts:
(2) 2.5" bore x 8" stroke smc cylinders (2) 2.5" bore x 6" stroke smc cylinders Logitech steering wheel and pedals Mag 18" LCD screen PS2 Summit racing bucket seat SMC Pneumatic Manifold 5 Air Gauges Viair 1.7 CFM compressor 80 CF Nitrogen Bottle Victor Regulator The only things that were purchase were the steering wheel and pedals, the bucket seats, and the pneumatic vavles. I am sure everyone is thinking that its a complete waste of time and money and i could just play the game at the arcade for about $.50. Your absolutely right. I must be crazy. I have not decided how i am going to control the valves. I will either use magnetic trigger switches in the steering wheel and pin switches on the pedals. Or i will splice into the actual plug going into the play station and read the voltage off of them. Then i will use some small reed relays to control the valves. I figure when i accelerate the front will go up, when i brake the back will go up, and left will go left and right will go right. If anyone has ideas, let me know because its never too late to change or modify plans for better ones.

how fast is that compressor thingy? cause unless its really fast and the feedback is quick, it's going to be pretty stupid IMHO. sweet idea tho, keep us updated

the compressor is a back up. The main supply will be the 80 cubic foot nitrogen bottle regulated to 30 psi. It holds about 3000 psi and will last about 2 hours on full use. the feedback is extremely quick. If i set it up at 150 psi i could easily shoot someone out of the seat about 10 feet in the air.

I am going to buy that cheap surround sound system they have at walmart of $79.99 and hook it up. I have it in my room and its not bad since all i was used to was one 3 inch speaker in my tv.

Check out this links page for grand prix legends under under 'wheels'. There are some pretty cool setups.

also, about the wheel, I heard its pretty cool on the PS2. I personally am in love with the ACT-LABS one, but I just use a PC for games and just love that shifter |

Don't you want room to place your left foot? Unless you're gonna do a lot of left-foot braking..

Here is a picture of Eric M. on it. You can see how is foot is resting right below it. It lets you use your right foot for both. We made everything so it could fit alot of people. I am 5' - 7" and he is 6' - 5" so everyone our size and in between will fit fine. Eric M's legs are extra long so i am assuming everyone should fit. |

i am doing this project along with nick, and although i'm sure there are other similar things, we thought it would be fun to do this from scratch not basing it off anything we had seen before in person. in fact, the design has taken a turn from using 1/2" aluminum tubing to using the square aluminum pieces, which are actually really easy to work with and very strong. in the picture of me sitting in the unfinished frame above, i am not even starting to stress the frame and i weigh about 215 pounds. i'm sure nick could hop on the frame too and it still wouldn't flex. aluminum is amazing for how light it is.
i think we are going to put some of that diamond plate floormat stuff for a floorboard, so you can rest your left foot there if you want. we will definitely post a video of this thing in action when it's working. you will see how fast it goes. my car is on air suspension right now and it is using similar cylinders, and it is super fast. when hooked up to a nitrogen bottle, it will be extremely responsive, fast and last for a couple hours of continuous use. tomorrow we are going to figure out where all the signals are coming from from the controller and how many relays we will need. if we can't get clear signals from the controller, then we will use small magnetic or pinswitches going to relays. it's all going to be 24v, since the SMC valves (shown below) are all going to use the industry standard 24v rather than the automotive standard 12v relays and valves. i have experience in the automation industry and nick has experience with air suspension and fabrication so this is a really fun project for us. after it's all done, we are going to polish up all the aluminum so it will look shiny and cool, and maybe add some underbody neon to make it fast. i'm sure sure about the spoiler yet. if anyone has good suggestions on stuff you can buy to polish aluminum, let us know. i already tried some of it with that mother's billet polish and it works pretty good. |
