Brian Crower - Anyone running their products?

I spoke to them at length yesterday. Don't know of anyone using their parts personally but the Crower name is pretty reputable in other circles. Need to get my 02' bugeye back on the road. For the same price I can either go with a STi complete motor swap (turbo, intercooler, ecu) or build out one of the 3 - EJ20 blocks I've had laying around the house for like 2 years. Also have a set of heads I can port. Car will strictly be used on track, NASA events, open road races, AutoX, etc... Thoughts? STi swap or Brian Crower / or other built motor Cams - Stage 2 Street/Strip Specification VALVE SPRING/RETAINER KIT STAINLESS STEEL VALVES (Complete Set) SUBARU EJ205 2.29L STROKER KIT ACL Race Bearings

Why not go stage three if you're doing track only? Not enough down low?
I will have BC stage 3's in my daily in a couple of weeks (with any luck!) Good luck with the build! |

if you really want to go that route...get EJ257 block cases first. May as well spend a bit more for added bore...the 2.29L is also only when you have 96mm bore...needs sleeves to do that.
he also includes ACL bearings with his stroke kits...not that I ever deal with him I like his stuff but am not a fan of stroker motors unless using them for auto-x, tight hill climbs and/or tight road course driving (small driving parks)... |

I am running BC valves, springs and retainers in my EJ255. Their cams were not released yet so I have Cossie 278/274 cams to go with it. I wish I could give you my feeling on them but the car is being very uncooperative at the moment and is refusing to be tuned.

if you are drag racing, road course or any other motorsports where you use your engine predominately higher rpm's a short rod ratio engine (stroker motor) has a higher frictional loss and increased wear on the piston and rings when compared to a longer rod ratio motor because or rod angularity. Also the longer rod ratio has higher VE's (torque curve put simply) because of how it makes the piston dwell in the engine. The longer rod also has less stress on rod bearings, crank, rod, piston and wrist pin (at the same given rpm) because of lower acceleration rates on the piston. That allows a higher rpm to achieve the same internal stresses (assuming masses are the same). Also doesn't require clearancing your block (added machining and decreased block strength) and increasing harmonics in the crankshaft (vibrations to eat bearings on that weakened block). Also has more dwell at TDC allowing for more accurate timing control and prevention of detonation (more free CR or boost )
On my engine, my 4" pistons are only 6 grams heavier than a JE 100mm slug but I have a higher CR and thus more material...so done properly the long rod has quite an advantage over a stroker...also 4" has a much better ring package. advantages of a stroker though is the same air flow can occur at a lower rpm, decreased lag (if you race out of your powerband). It will always have some instant "punch" over the long rod (hence the tight course advantage). BC 272 cams, Springs, retainers in my EJ20 Heads (no porting) mated to an 05 STi shortblock (stock) with a Deadbolt TD06H-20G, 800CC injectors, Mega MAF, FMIC.
It is being tuned as we speak today.. should have some results by end of day today. |

Turns out the heads didn't get back from the machine shop until mid afternoon on Friday, so the engine was just going back together then...
Hopeful for a pickup time of end of day Monday. |

Cams are in and running strong... I'm waiting to get some more accurate dyno readings before posting the results.. Dyno Dynamics that it was on was calibrated for a 6-speed instead of the 5-speed for readings.

I would use brian crower stuff
my buddy has an evo 8 with an evo 9 turbo, aem ems, 272 bc cams, tbe and running e85 with about 420 hp to the wheels. The cams are really what make that engine |

does anyone know if i can just drop bc 272 cams in my ej20 without getting a valve job done? ive already installed them and talked to BC and they told me it was just drop in with stock springs/retainers/valves. just wanted to get a second opinion. and also see what kind of difference in power people are getting out of these???? i would like to start my break in period, but subaru dealer takes forever to get in the parts i need. oh yea anyone know where the engine break in link went? i cant seem to find it.

you just did cam work right? or a new motor? cam break in is different from engine break in...
I know the BC cams aren't too aggressive but I wouldn't run on factory springs. Just asking for trouble in my book. Who did you talk with at BC? Dustin? Brian? |

i did race bearings and cams. pretty much a whole rebuild of my motor with stock parts sadly except for the bearings and cams. i hate being a broke soldier haha. how should i go abut engine/cam break in for the first start up? i found cobbs procedure. should i just go by that and use reg oil then switch to synthetic after 1k miles? and how soon after 1k miles can i go up to 18.5psi street/22-23psi strip w/alky injection to go get tuned???

Yes, Jeremy's (cobb's) break in procedures are actually quite good and very detailed. Follow them and you shouldn't have an issue.
