we bought our 12 impreza limited nav/moonroof with a 3 year 75,000 extended warranty in march. i am in south dakota where the roads are very flat for very long periods of time and almost no hills even close to us. this car has been all highway and as of now we have 5,200 miles on it. we are getting 27-29 mpg and the average speed has been 65. i havent even seen low 30s in this car since we have had it. i called the dealership to make an appointment for clips in the dash that i heard pinging and the rattling noise today and when i was on hold a commercial came on and said that the all new impreza gets up to 40 mpg! come on NOODLES! dint a lady just win 10,000 from honda for lying about the mpg??? i smell a lawsuit! whos with me? lol anyway, i do love the car but hate the dealership...wont ven go into that. so its my fault that i dint know that awd cars dont get that kind of mileage? and is my fault for trusting what it says on the invoice? i do know the car was made in jan 12 so im hoping that update will help. anyone know of any good lawyers? i think her name was HEATHER PETERS

I got the 2 year/30K free maint. on my tundra (which just ran out dammit). I will continue to go there for my oil changes, but thats prob it since I can do everything my self. The price of buying your own oil and the hassle these days just isn't worth it. 6 quarts of oil @ $3 each (dino) plus the $4 filter= $22+ tax. For an extra $5-8 I can have someone else get dirty and dispose of the oil as I drink their coffee and relax. I remember buying Mobil 1 for like $3 a quart. Now it's hard to find decent non synth for that price!

With the synthetic though it's much more expensive on this car. At least at the dealership it is. One local dealer does it for $69.95, the other I think is $79.95 & from what I've read on here some are charging $80-$90.

yep...i was one of the high ones. $82.95 with coupon...

i can do it for under $35 (assuming i can get away with exactly 5 quarts...if not, it'll be a few bucks more if i put in 1/4 qt extra). definitely worth my effort.

of course, free is the right price and i would have gladly taken that for a few years.

We should watch this 12 month test on the 2012 Impreza. They're testing a CVT and 603 miles in there numbers show this:

Current Odometer: 603 miles
Best Fuel Economy: 25.4 mpg
Worst Fuel Economy: 24.0 mpg
Average Fuel Economy (over the life of the vehicle): 24.6 mpg

I'm definitely planning on checking in occasionally. His whole rant about the new car smell is a but strange, don't you think?

I think they won because they can't be held liable for a 3rd party test and disclaimers saying that driving habits are not a factor in said tests anyway.

I'm right there with ya. I'm getting just about 28 with a avg MPH of 22. No real complaints here. Seems like most of the people with less than average MPG are driving the CVT.

The whole problem with the Honda situation was that Honda was updating people's ECU (without telling them) in order to save the battery from dieing before the warranty ran out. From the factory, those hybrids used the battery very frequently and would drain the battery to almost empty without a second thought. It achieved it good MPG numbers by working the battery more than any other hybrid. After the update, they stopped using the battery as much and tried to never drain it very far. This totally changed the behavior of when the battery got used and tanked people's MPG.

Then even though the behavior and efficiency of the car drastically changed, Honda never updated the EPA numbers, they just played dumb and kept updating ECUs without disclosing the change to customers.

I think people here would be pretty pissed too if you want in for an oil change, and left with a car that was suddenly getting 10 MPG less than before. There is more going on here than just someone who decided to sue because they were not happy with the MPG. Honda was doing some shady stuff in the background as well.

Had the ECM updated this morning. The TCM reported as "up to date". The CVT does shift differently and I actually saw a MPG gain in city driving, but that was only for about 25 miles. We'll have to wait and see what the long term brings. Overall, it seems to drive better than when delivered. I have just over 4800 miles on the car and use 10% Ethenol @89 gas.

I hate to compare a modern hybrid car to my old 90s remote control cars but i could have told you the batterys wouldnt last. Its really a buyer beware type of world. They bought the car which was a new technology at the time. Common sense should have told them it was a bad idea.

Not saying honda isnt to blame but they already offered cash and a rebate on a new honda to people involved in the lawsuit

is that 28mpg hand calculated, or computer reported? if the former, that's really good and indicates that the 5MT is very efficient relative to the CVT around town. in my limited experience, my CVT will yield about 26 mpg calculated at that average speed.

eg, my current tank averaging 19-20mpg on my CVT is reporting 27mpg, but i'm guessing is 25.5 mpg in reality.

although 25 mi is a short distance, it sounds like you have had your car long enough to know what it was like before the update, and now the differences.

care to share what you have observed thus far in terms of what you mean by improved driveability and gain in MPG?

regardless, keep us posted on the long term.

(it makes me wonder that even if this really helps the driveability and milage a lot, how many customers out there (many not on this forum) who will own their car for 5-10 years and get less than optimal performance in shifting and mileage because they are unaware of these updates...)

Well the battery getting killed before the warranty is out is Honda's problem. Honda takes the risk with new technology within the warranty period. Making dramatic ECU updates without telling the owner turns it into the owner's problem. The better thing for Honda to do would have been to eat the replacement cost of the batteries. And at this point, that would have been cheaper than lawyers anyway.

those batteries must be more expensive than you think for honda to go out of their way to not replace them.

mine is $80 which includes the tire rotation.....less if I use the coupon.....as for the MPGs...I currently have almost 13,000 on my HB limited CVT PZEV......I can say that 10,000 actually seems to be a reasonable break in level for this engine.....Im averaging 31+ now on my commute of 53 miles one way from southern Md into northern VA each day....though mostly hwy at 55-75 depending on the traffic and road conditions flat and rolling hills....have seen as high as 34 through 1/2 a tank.....

I saw a slight increase after the first oil change at 3700.....another at the the 6-7K range.....and it appears to be evening out now that I have passed through 10,000......running regular w/10% ethanol......have not take any extended trips in the HB, but beleive I can get 33-34+ on extended road trips running 250-300 miles or more on one leg........MPG was not the primary consideration when buying the car...AWD was number one and HB was two...MPGs was third on my priority list.....so with that said...Im happy with the purchase and overall fit and ergonomics of the Impreza.....

i can't remember: have you or are you planning on checking out the TSB updates or already done them?

i'm hoping and almost expecting to be able to get 34 mpg or more (!) on my trip next week (assuming traffic isn't bad -- it usually isn't) driving 60-70mph on a 90% highway sort of trip. i'm planning on starting a new tank before the trip so i can get a real time feedback of the trip's mileage without having to reset my TripB which i'm keeping as my running total (someone mentioned that after 10k, it rolls over?)

it's good, regardless of the TSBs to get an experienced perspective on the transitioning to better mileage via break in.

it's going to take me a while to get to the 10k mark (that's about what i drive each year. i plan to change my oil at around the 2k point just to do it, and then after that will start a 6 month interval and see if i feel the need to stretch it out or go more frequently.

Default Car at the dealer right now for TCM and ECU updates

My car is at the dealer today getting the TCM and ECU updates. I'll keep everyone posted. The service rep was embarrassed that I knew more about the TSB's than they did. They say they are usually the last to know...does SOA not send out updates to dealers or do dealers just ignore them unless customers compalin?
